Which one? Clueless how to dress myself!

Timeforsinging81 · 18/05/2021 17:53

I ordered these online and love the flowery cami dress but I'm not sure whether the green dress suits me?

For info, I'm 36, size 10/12 on top and 14/16 on the bottom. I've got friends and colleagues that are in their early-mid 20s so on one hand I don't want to look old and unfashionable when we go out, but on the other hand I want to be comfortable and not look like I'm dressing too young. Help! Should I stick to my safe dress style or go for something different? I'm newly single and having a bit of a crisis of confidence!

First one!!!

bonfireheart · 18/05/2021 18:42

The first one is a weird length.
The second again it's the length, think if you could adjust it so its below the knew that would look much more flattered. Also agree with PP that you could wear something with more of a pop of colour and you'd look great.

What kinda stuff are you after? Day wear or party wear? What would you not wear?

MN is great at helping find something to suit you.

Twattergy · 18/05/2021 18:50

Green one - fabric looks cheap, very dated and unflattering shape, style and belt.
Floral one - much better shape, style with wedges or flats or trainers, basket type bag and it'd look youthful and summery. Try that shape in different prints too. Ditsy print, stripes, animal print etc.

thehairyhog · 18/05/2021 19:05

Of the two, the second one is nicer. But honestly I think they both wash you out, the colours don't seem ideal for your skin tone? Shape/style of the first one is awful, sorry. Think you can do much better! A stronger colour?

Thatswatshesaid · 18/05/2021 19:07

I much prefer the first one.
I think the views here show that everyone has different opinions on what looks nice. You should go with what you like.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 18/05/2021 19:11

I think you could find a much more flattering dress, these aren't doing your lovely figure any favours.

Dazedandconfused28 · 18/05/2021 19:19

I think you can do better, you have a cracking figure. I think the first dress is very dated & looks a bit cheap, I think they both make you look bigger than you are.

Would you try a more vibrant shade? I think a bright berry colour would look amazing on you.

What about a dress like this? With a denim jacket & trainers?

WirKindervomBahnhofZoo · 18/05/2021 19:23

2nd one makes your waist look teeny tiny!

mimirouge · 18/05/2021 19:32

Not keen on the first but the second is perfect for your figure

FunnyWonder · 18/05/2021 19:36

The second one is fab😊😊

sunshinewinetime · 18/05/2021 19:38

I think you could find something that will flatter your figure much better than either of those

Miseryl · 18/05/2021 19:39

You have a lovely curvy figure but neither are flattering on you- I think they age you.

Timeforsinging81 · 18/05/2021 19:43

Thanks all. I really hate dressing for summer! I have the kind of skin tone that looks great in autumn/jewel colours eg.plum, emerald, mustard so I struggle with pastels and brights. I'm very pale with dark copper/auburn hair.

I'm planning to keep the floral dress for wearing on days out with the family in summer, with trainers or sandals. I'm handy with a sewing machine so I could shorten it a bit but tbh the length is handy for keeping my dignity while I'm sat on the floor with the children!

KnottedFern Yes it's H&M, I liked the same dress in black but I already have a lot of black maxi dresses and I'm not sure I have the personality to suit the animal print version! I've got a few jumpsuits on order but have yet to find one that looks half decent, where have you bought from?

Bonfireheart I'm mainly after outfits for socialising again. I can manage casual daytime stuff but dressing for a night out fills me with dread. I don't like feeling too dressed up and on show! My usual go-to would have been black skinny jeans, top, wedge heels and blazer, is this still good for a night out? I've got a mum tum to disguise too now so tops can be a bit tricky to get right.

Thanks for the links dazedandconfused Berry is definitely a colour that suits me and I like the Hush one but I'm only 5'3 so it would probably be too long for me. I'd not heard of the other site so I'm gonna check it out.

Because you are different sixes top and bottom separates might work better for you?
Also go with a medium sized pattern as a large pattern can make you look much bigger than you are. You could wear vertical stripes on your bottom half to even things out x

buckeejit · 18/05/2021 19:54

You've a great figure, from what I can see though the neck is too high on the first & the dress too long on the second.

I'd really recommend getting your colours & style 'done'. It's been great for me to know what suits me instead of just buying what I like, (mostly used to be the opposite of what suited me as I bought what I wanted to look like-the others man's grass etc)

mathanxiety · 18/05/2021 19:54

The floral one suits your shape far better. It's a nice print too.

The green is a lovely colour but the style / shape doesn't suit you.

bonfireheart · 18/05/2021 19:56

Yes :) esp if you feel comfortable in them.

Attached pics of options if it's dresses you're after...

I like the second dress OP. It looks a bit long but with some heels it will fine.

I have similar colouring to you and I find that most lighter colours wash me out too. I need deeper / richer colours.

laughoutquiet · 18/05/2021 20:01

@Rattysparklebum

Not being able to see your face, the first green dress makes me think you are in your 20’s to early 30’s, the flowery dress makes me think you are in your 50’s, it looks quite frumpy
I was about to say exactly this.
BeaLola · 18/05/2021 20:10

Okay I will preface my thoughts with the fact that I'm neither stylish or beautiful and have no idea how to dress my 50+ overweight self ....
I think the poster who said the first one made them think you're in your 20s and the second you're in your fifties summed up my thoughts - they are "ok" but you have a lovely shape and I think there are better out there for you

Of the Boden dresses I prefer all of them (I do like Boden apart from the Austin powers weird type prints)

Re jeans - again I'm hardly a style icon but as someone who has always been too large to wear jeans I'm very envious of the people when I see them out from anywhere from pubs, casual drinks, posh restaurants who wear skinny black jeans with some sort of casual or amazing to, great accessories and look really really great – whenever I see those people I think perhaps I will get to fit jeans in my next life Smile

Snally82 · 18/05/2021 20:17

I don’t think the fit is great on either if I’m honest but the flower one seems like it suits you more.

Daisy829 · 18/05/2021 20:18

Second one is gorgeous. I’m not as keen on the first. I agree with pp that the fabric puts me off. Makes me feel uncomfortably warm just looking at it. That’s probably a perimenopause thing though!

Twinkie01 · 18/05/2021 20:27

You can do better than both of those dresses. The green does nothing for you and the flowery one is a bit frumpy.

What about a long pleated satin skirt and a silk vest with either a blazer for smart or denim or biker jacket for pub days? Heels with the posh look and trainers for pub.

When you're very different sizes on top and bottom separates are often more flattering.

SpeckledyHen · 18/05/2021 20:38

Totally agree . OP you can’t suit both autumn and jewel colours. Autumn are warm shades and jewel are cool . From your description of your colouring you are most likely to be autumn or spring .
