Ballet flats

I've seen lots of comments on this forum about how passé ballet flats and I'm now concerned.....

At this time of year I live in 3/4 length smart trousers and ballet flats

I'm tall with disproportionately long legs and slim ankles- if it makes any difference. I hanker after the chic Parisian look.

So do I throw my ballet flats away? And if so what do I wear instead?

No, wear your ballet flats! They’re timeless and classic. If you want a small change maybe pointed flats would be nice.

CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove · 15/05/2021 21:35

Sorry but I think ballet flats are officially "dated". unless you are truly mastering the chic Parisian look.

ElderMillennial · 15/05/2021 21:36

Wear what you like and what suits you.

Why would you throw away something you like just because of what people on the internet might say?!

Ireolu · 15/05/2021 21:42

I still wear them but it seems ballet flats together with skinny jeans are so 2009....

FourTurnings · 15/05/2021 22:47

I think they’re making a comeback.
Russell and Bromley are stocking them (not necessarily cutting edge I know but I buy all my shoes from there and manage to look reasonably on trend).
Ultimately if you love them and they suit you, I say wear them.

Iamthewombat · 15/05/2021 22:49

I’m not throwing mine away. Long live the ballet flats!

I’ve got loads from French Sole and I regard them as a style classic.

whatswithtodaytoday · 15/05/2021 22:50

Wear what you like. I've been wearing them since the 90s, they go in and out of fashion but they suit me and my feet.

I don't wear trainers except for sport, I find them clumpy and uncomfortable. Sandals often give me blisters. Boots are for winter. Brogues make my feet look huge. Ballet flats are just right!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 15/05/2021 23:08

I stopped wearing them about 5/6 years ago, so yes I do think they're a bit passé. But I do think ballet flats are pretty, I'm just shallow and I like to keep with trends Blush

In the summer I will be wearing (doesn't feel like summer just yet!)

I think they're making a comeback. Didn't Angelina Jolie wear them in Vogue recently?

I have some Allbirds Treebreezers which I wear with jeans. I don't own skinnies, but I wear them with baggier jeans and like the two together.

CheerfulBunny · 15/05/2021 23:17

Yep, you can prize my French Sole out of my cold dead hands - and my numerous pairs of heels for that matter. I've got white converse and DM's as well, both of which seems to be extremely popular on here. There's a place for everything, surely?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/05/2021 09:41

Ballet pumps are coming back in, they’re all over the Zara website with baggy ripped jeans and crop tops! They’re more like traditional ballet shape than the pointed ones now, with a round or squared toe.

Winkywonkydonkey · 16/05/2021 09:43

It's a struggle for work. I can't wear trainers or sandals to work. I find brogues a bit hipstery. I don't want to look like I have school shoes on. What else is there? Boating shoes and loafers make you look like a middle class playground mum who has shares in a narrow boat and a dog named Jarvis.

Candleabra · 16/05/2021 09:49

I find ballet flats really hard to wear. I have to sort of grip them with my toes inside, or buy ones that are too small.
So I don't wear them. But I do like the option of wearing flat shoes that aren't clumpy. Very hard to find.

AbstractDot · 16/05/2021 10:11

Ballet flats ruined my feet causing bunions and corns. I've been relieved to see the much more practical loafers are a big trend amongst 20 somethings in my office and I am comfortable and trendy(maybe) in mine

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 10:13

The ones I mentioned above I find really comfortable, but they are quite pricey.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 16/05/2021 10:14

Just been searching for ballet flats - the high toed (if you get me) versions that look like actual ballet shoes are absolutely my bag this spring. I think they along with Mary Jane espadrilles will be the shoes of summer for the floaty dress crew (me 😆)

Standrewsschool · 16/05/2021 10:15

Wear what you want!

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 10:17

Yes, porpoise, sort of higher vamp? So no toe cleavage. I prefer these too.

Oh god, those sandals are just awful.

I still wear ballet flats at work. Wear what you are comfy in.

RubyFowler · 16/05/2021 10:18

A loafer or an espadrille would be an alternative?

RosesAndHellebores · 16/05/2021 10:21

I have only one word: Bobbies- do Google.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 16/05/2021 10:22

Yes! Exactly @LuckyMcDucky
Having a right browse now :)

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 16/05/2021 10:24

Omg! How have I not seen Bobbies! Thank you!!!!

Nitgel · 16/05/2021 10:26

Ballet flats are just a classic imo dune Harper are varied. Crew clothing do nice pointy suede flats.
