I have been in a vicious circle for 20+ years of growing and then having my natural wavy/curly hair cut into an inverted Bob.
The minute I have it cut into a Bob I hate it because I am fat of face and I look crap.
I wonder if I should dye it but on the other hand I think white roots are ageing.
I'm at that place again where it's shoulder length and looking rubbish . Today I used Philip Kingsley Elastulizer and it still looks dry/frizzy/lifeless.

Do I dye it / cut it ? I really don't know what to do (I am mid 50's)

Oh my word I really wasn't expecting so many nice comments because I really think my hair is rubbish!
When I was younger I had proper ringlets like Shirley Temple but my hair was golden blonde then.
It's this totally white dry ( and falling out) alien hair I have now I struggle to know what to do with Confused

I have had a fringe multiple times but now I can't be doing with having to straighten it every day and also worrying about rain/humidity

It's really nice but maybe needs a trim on the ends. Mine is thick and wavy if I leave it, which I do sometimes, I blow dry it mostly and it looks more groomed. I do get it trimmed regularly though, makes it easier to manage. Not in a Bob just ask them to trim the layers so you can leave it to dry.

Quitelikeacatslife · 14/05/2021 23:51

I've also got a few nice clips and pin the very front up in a quiff, that would suit you, for a change. Or lovely headbands around too. Your hair lends itself to that. Oliver bonas is great for more grown up stuff like that

OppsUpsSide · 14/05/2021 23:52

I love your hair!
Pop some coconut oil or olive oil on it with a plastic bag on top, leave for a couple of hours and wash out

Lindy2 · 15/05/2021 00:01

The curls and the colour are fabulous.

However, it does look dry and frizzy.

If it was me I'd have a trim of the ends to even up the length and make it look neat. I'd probably go for a side parting rather than a centre parting. I think side parting and generally more flattering. I'd also put Frizz Ease or coconut oil on my hair after washing to define the curls a bit more and add gloss as well as getting rid of the frizz.

You really are very lucky though to have such lovely hair.

Learningtofeminist · 15/05/2021 00:27

I tried curly girl last year. My hair is fine and wavy so it wasn’t for me, but I now wash it just a week with sulphate-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioner, then blowdry (previously used regular shampoo & conditioner, wash & blowdry every 3 days). Occasionally do an apple cider vinegar rinse. You don’t have to do the CGM all-or-nothing approach everyone says 😊 you could just start with a curly girl friendly shampoo & conditioner. I did find mousse/gel when wet HUGELY reduced the frizz though.

Learningtofeminist · 15/05/2021 00:28

(P.S. Like everyone else says, love your curls and colour!)

unwuthering · 15/05/2021 02:28

Don't cut it, don't colour it. It's gorgeous. Be proud!

Just smack it with a bit of hand/body lotion, whatever, or a cream hair product if you have it - a pea-sized amount spread into your palms and clap bits of the ends with it. Works a treat.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/05/2021 02:33

FFS, your hair is gorgeous! I love everything about it, truthfully, and I will cry if you colour it. I think all you need is to experiment with some conditioning products and how you dry it.

Fair enough! It looks lovely as it is!!

ufucoffee · 15/05/2021 07:09

You'd find it very hard to dye it successfully. White hair is very resistant. I'd blow dry it using a large barrel brush to give it a bit of bounce.

DeadCertain · 15/05/2021 07:42

Echo everyone's comments on the colour, it's amazing!!!

I have just started trying to get my frizzy, wavy hair looking nice when not straightened. I haven't gone full CG as I wash it every day but I have seen an enormous difference in a fortnight using sulphate - free shampoo and conditioner and Alberto Balsam styling gel (£1) and leaving to dry naturally - then scrunching out the gel crispiness.

I do use a deep conditioner once per week - but you already have that, so it wouldn't take much to give it a go.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 15/05/2021 07:49

My hair is similar in curl to yours, OP, and I'd be happy if mine looks like later on. I had to give up with curls though as I just don't have time in the morning to let it air dry (blow dry a total no-no) and one gust of wind en route to work left me looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards.
My DP bought me this amazing blow dryer though - it's got a cylindrical barrel with bristles and rotates as it dries. It gives great waves and loads of shine. As my hair is naturally curly, these waves tighten up in the day and it looks great. I'll link it.

Changed my life! :D

Girlintheframe · 15/05/2021 08:29

I love your hair. The colour is fantastic and I like the length too. If I was you I would try and work with your curls.
Cgm doesn't have to be expensive but does need some reading up on so you understand what your doing.
If it were my hair I would be trying to accentuate the curls and aim to get the hair as healthy as possible.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/05/2021 08:38

I love the colour.

It's a bit shapeless. I think it needs a good, shorter cut & treatment in a hairdressers. Get them to recommend an at-home treatment.

Have regular hair appointments to trim & shape it.

nettersrunboulder86 · 15/05/2021 08:39

You have lovely hair! I have curly hair and use the granite banana shampoo and conditioner. I leave the conditioner in and turn my hair upside down in the shower and run my fingers through it to get my curls to 'clump'. I don't like the curly girl method as I need to wash my hair as it's fine and I do lots of exercise. I use a L'Oréal mousse for curly hair in gold packaging I find this coats my curls nicely and gets them into shape and then air dry and fluff at the roots (or diffuse if I need to get out). Then I fluff with fingers at the roots and gently scrunch out where it's gone crunchy. I'm getting the first few greys in my hair and yours is exactly how I'm hoping it goes Smile

That's mad advice! A total 'no' to putting hand or body lotion on your hair 😮

The OP will end up with greasy roots & still dry ends.

OP's hair is lovely, but she's older & her hair is now clearly dry & brittle looking. Treatment by a hairdresser is best.

CoronaCurls · 15/05/2021 08:50

Your hair is fab OP! It would be worth investing in a good curl-specific hairdresser. A curl specialist would enable you to keep it longer and make the most of your fab curls and colour.

Curly girl method is brilliant and often works out cheaper because it is the basic conditioners that are good - lots cg-friendly ones for £1 ish a bottle.

You could enhance the colour with some non-natural colour - Directions have a fab range of colours. My hair is still much greyer than yours, and I colour it lilac which makes me feel much better about being grey!

unwuthering · 15/05/2021 09:21

I said "clap bits of the ends with it". Just the ends.

It's a technique my hairdresser showed me. I use hair cream, but the OP isn't wanting to buy more stuff that may or may not work; and if you're on a budget, hand cream does the trick also I have found. We're talking about a pea-sized bit of product.

unwuthering · 15/05/2021 09:54

In case it is still not perfectly clear: I use "Crack leave-in styling creme", by preference. Take a pea-sized amount and rub between palms, then clap at the very ends of a piece of the hair on your right c couple of times and then smack the hair on your left between the flat opened palms ditto, and then on clap at another section of ends on the right, and so on.

If I can't be stuffed, and I've just creamed my face, neck, hands, or arms with something, I smack the ends with that before I go out.

Am currently using up old products, like John Freida's Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Creme, and Matrix Biolage Deep Smoothing Leave-in Cream - wouldn't rebuy either of those, but the Crack is good.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 15/05/2021 10:00

You need to look at the curly girl method .. I f
Have had curly hair all my life and only follow a bit of it that I worked out on my own years ago tbh ! However if you add product to your hair when it is soaking wet then 'plop' put your hair in a micro fibre towel for 15 mins and then diffuse it you will have different hair ! You need to do a lot of squishing of the product when in the shower or whatever to encourage the defined curl .

Thehawki · 15/05/2021 10:17

I have straight hair so unfortunately don’t have any advice for you. I just wanted to let you know that your hair texture and colour is STUNNING.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 15/05/2021 10:43

Your hair colour is an absolute dream! So no need to dye which is great news for your hair health.

Curly girl method would uncover those childhood ringlets that you mentioned and look absolutely stunning.

Lots of people think their hair is just wavy when actually with some TLC they have natural bouncy curls. Here are some before and after to show similarly wavy hair transformed by the curly girl method.

Auxence · 15/05/2021 10:55

Ooh, your hair is amazing! I love the colour, curls and even the length.

I would just experiment with conditioning treatments until you find something that gives your curls a bit more volume and shine. I am (sadly) straight-haired but have also heard great things about the curly girl method.

Exactly as it is, but with more body and bounce in those curls, your hair would be double-take-in-the-street levels of stunning!
