Go on then - would you buy it or bin it?

I'm considering making more of these jackets, sewn from vintage patchwork quilts, to sell via Etsy and possibly an upmarket farmers market in a nearby (NM stronghold) town.

For context, Etsy sell similar for £250.

  1. Would you buy it?
  2. If so, what would you be prepared to pay?

I've asked my sisters, one looked appalled and muttered something about it being 'very niche' while the other was enthusiastic.

Thanks in advance Smile

I like it, and can see the artistry, but I wouldn't buy or wear one.

I did recently see 'upcycled' denim jackets for kids with quilted patches and they were very cute. I'd even be tempted by adults ones.

I really like it, old hippy that I am. Although I'd prefer it in shades of pink.

However, being Northern (and mostly shopping in charity shops) the idea of paying anything like £250 had me fainting.

I'd happily wear one, but I wouldn't pay more than about £25 for a jacket. Did you make it from a pattern?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 14/05/2021 19:58

Beautiful sewing, very intricate, I can absolutely appreciate the skill it takes to make them, but the bottom line is they are just not very chic. I'd feel frumpy in this.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 14/05/2021 20:05

I'd like them in more Bright contrasting colours

Like the Toast kanta ones

I can't afford Toast though, nor £250 on a jacket, in all honesty

FelicityBeedle · 14/05/2021 20:09

In a different very vibrant fabric it could be modern and a bit subversive, but in those prints it doesn’t quite work. Another admiring your skill though !

FelicityBeedle · 14/05/2021 20:13

Oops just seen you’d had enough opinions, sorry ignore me!

AlexaNeverListens · 14/05/2021 20:13

I think you must be super talented to be able to do this, but like others, I would only wear it if I was at least 90 years old and living in a nursing home.

A friend of mine makes quilts and cushions etc for parents/grandparents. She uses old baby clothes so they have a permanent reminder of their baby/childhood. She also makes them for students leaving for Uni and does a roaring trade. Maybe you could do something like that?

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 14/05/2021 20:16

Op it looks nice and cosy, consider whether it's for wearing to bed, wearing to sliuchround the house or wearing out and about and match the patchwork/colours according...for example your jacket in the photo with that design looks nice and cosy for wearing in the house or to bed on a cold night...but for wearing out and about you need to think of the right type of colours/patterns to use

Don't give up op, if it's something you want to do, just explore more to find which attend and colours work best

Also £250 could be steep for some people to pay and might put people off ordering... you might get more customers if you lower your price a little

Sexnotgender · 14/05/2021 20:17

Bin it.

And £250Confused

bunglebee · 14/05/2021 20:58

I agree that in a dark ornate fabric and a Japanese style, it would be quite avant-garde and justifiably command a high price tag. Other than that, your market is basically "hipsters for whom the uglier the better" (sorry), but not many hipsters have £250 to drop on this kind of thing. I think the one you've linked at £250 is quite a different proposition because of its colours and styling, targeting a very different market.

excelledyourself · 14/05/2021 22:32

It's not for me, but you are clearly very talented, and it would be a very boring life if we all liked the same things. Give it a bash on Etsy, I say. I don't know how selling on there works, but what is there to lose?

I do like that it matches your garden wall Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/05/2021 00:00

Quilted jackets are in. Apparently. www.wearsmymoney.com/shopping/six-spring-outfit-ideas-for-may/

PrimalLass · 15/05/2021 00:04

I would not buy it as I don't buy anything that's drop shoulder.

Bimblybomeyelash · 15/05/2021 00:19

I actually like it, but not the drab fabric choice. I think similar sorts of things would sell in a certain sort of town! I’ve always hankered after a quilted bomber jacket myself, the bolder the better.

Bimblybomeyelash · 15/05/2021 00:23

If they can do it then so can you! www.thewildfolkstudio.com/product/the-shawl-coat

Dogoodfeelgood · 15/05/2021 00:23

I think it would be very on trend if you made it oversized with 90s style prints! Like a shacket/kimono thing.

Mvemjsunp86 · 15/05/2021 07:25

I totally admire the craft. I like the shape but think a plain colour might work better? Wouldn't wear it as is.

MayIDestroyYou · 15/05/2021 08:05

I agree the concept just needs tweaking slightly to elevate it to 'fashionable'.

It reminded me that I own a quilted jacket by Camiel Fortgens, bought at the end of Summer last year - with high hopes of a stylish Autumn. Still unworn but I'm very fond of it. (Shop photos, not me!)

StarlightLady · 15/05/2021 08:14

I’m afraid it would not be for me with a 3 figure price tag. But if I did buy one, I would want to be assured that it was washable.

Journeynotdestination · 15/05/2021 10:03

If I had £250 I’d probably buy a similar from Toast to be honest.

Very lovely though!

NewMexico · 15/05/2021 10:28

They are a bit of a thing at the moment! sheerluxe.com/fashion/18-patchwork-jackets-to-try-this-season

Zinnia · 15/05/2021 10:47

I'm with@DK123 on this. I think they are beautiful and bang on trend at the moment, a couple of Insta people I follow are linking to very similar things at the moment from small businesses. I couldn't really justify £250 for one but I think away from MN there is a market for them.

PanamaPattie · 15/05/2021 10:49

I would make a quilt out of old jackets and coats. Sorry OP.

Herja · 15/05/2021 10:58

I actually like it, but it's too short for me. I'd want it about 6 inches longer. I'd also prefer a darker (not dark, just not quite so pale) colour. I'd not pay £250 for it though. Realistically, £75 at most and I doubt that's worth the time.
