Go on then - would you buy it or bin it?

I'm considering making more of these jackets, sewn from vintage patchwork quilts, to sell via Etsy and possibly an upmarket farmers market in a nearby (NM stronghold) town.

For context, Etsy sell similar for £250.

  1. Would you buy it?
  2. If so, what would you be prepared to pay?

I've asked my sisters, one looked appalled and muttered something about it being 'very niche' while the other was enthusiastic.

Thanks in advance Smile

I quite like it and would wear it, but wouldn't spend £250 on it.

My style is a bit "different" though.

hellswelshy · 14/05/2021 18:47

I quite like it, but not in those colours, too much like a bed spread. If they were dark/jewel colours I think they would be lovely & maybe more kimono style. But £250, yikes.

Girlintheframe · 14/05/2021 18:47

Sorry not my cup of tea at all

DK123 · 14/05/2021 18:47

It's beautiful and a lovely jacket, but I wouldn't wear it myself. I do like these sort of clothes more than other people here seem to though and I'm sure others do too. If it was in dark colours then I would definitely wear it. It's the fact it's pale that makes it look too like a bedspread. I'm a bit concerned that you might not get a lot of interest at £250, as a lot of people would consider it unaffordable, but I appreciate it will have taken a huge amount of time to make.

Jongleurterre · 14/05/2021 18:47

Google Kantha jackets and coats as you will be able to sell them.

Example here although this is quite a bright one

SmileyClare · 14/05/2021 18:47

Hmm well if Etsy are selling them for £250... who are your target audience, posh rural dog walker, farmer types? It looks warm.

Found this on Etsy: so maybe go brighter and bolder for the festival, hippy vibe?

PegasusReturns · 14/05/2021 18:49

Yeah I’m afraid @YourCakesAreShit has it.

Beautiful quilts however are far less niche.

Jongleurterre · 14/05/2021 18:49

This is the type of quilting that is more mainstream and can command a high price

Another one that is beautiful

Frazzle76 · 14/05/2021 18:50

I agree.
However if you'd make me a bespoke bedspread I'd pay up to about £150 for that.
Time is valuable and I can sew dresses but not quilt or do fancy cushions or curtains etc. I'm just not neat enough.
I think if you're advertising on etsy then do them alongside your usual products made to order only.

Recruit2020 · 14/05/2021 18:51

Yes. £80-£90 max I know im in the minority.

NuffSaidSam · 14/05/2021 18:51

It's looks very cosy. I'd like one to wear at home, but not outside. Essentially, I'd just like to be wrapped up in a quilt...

Eightiesfan · 14/05/2021 18:52

No sorry, although I think it’s the fabric patterns that I have an issue with rather than the design, as it screams old folks home.

If it was me I would go big or go home and look at retro patterns with a bit of velvet thrown in!

ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 14/05/2021 18:52

£250!

I wouldn't wear them out by if the house but they make me think of the word housecoat which I know is technically the same as a dressing gown but the style makes me thing coat.

GameSetMatch · 14/05/2021 18:52

The patten is great but the bed sheets don’t do it any justice. In a different looser material it would look so much better. As is it’s a ‘no’ from me.

HideousKinky · 14/05/2021 18:55

I admire your skills but I would not wear it

PandaLady · 14/05/2021 18:57

It is a very pale colour... I could make the kantha ones I just liked these Sad but I have always been a bit off the wall.

Anyway, onwards and upwards! I will give the kantha jackets a go and I have another style of jacket which I've made from Chinese fabric which I think might sell.

I'm signing off now, thank you for your feedback, I needed a dose of reality!

If it was bomber jacket shaped with a zip fastening I might buy it. It would be a bit trendy/quirky then. This blazer jacket shape just looks bad.

Miseryisabutterfly · 14/05/2021 19:04

I like it op, I think you’re really talented! I’d spend £100 but couldn’t see myself stretching past that.

Miseryisabutterfly · 14/05/2021 19:07

By the way there’s an influencer I like a lot (Trine Kjaer) who’s style really fits with this and I could see her wearing!

Mankyfruitbowl · 14/05/2021 19:13

In case you come back OP, I just wanted to say patchwork seems to be quite on trend at the moment - have a look on Netaporter for example. I really like this patchwork skirt

www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/zimmermann/wild-botanica-gathered-floral-print-linen-and-silk-blend-maxi-skirt/1319439

But the price!

oober · 14/05/2021 19:37

I'd wear one but I wouldn't pay £250 for it. I'd pay £50 though.

Susannahmoody · 14/05/2021 19:39

This is what I call Midwestern Mom style that can be found in Walmart.

Personally I love it but can't imagine that folk would spend that on them.

Atalune · 14/05/2021 19:45

Love it.

Would sell so well with hipsters.

happysunr1se · 14/05/2021 19:48

It's similar to something I might buy. If you look at Isabel Marant, the dempster coat (from a previous season) in particular, Kapital clothing and Japanese traditional clothing; Hanten and Haori.

I have a thing for Japanese clothing so if it was tweaked more (authentically) in that direction, so not that collar, different sleeves and closure, stitching/pattern more like sashiko or boro style I would consider buying.
