DD's Prom dress is navy, what colour accessories?

So her dress is navy. She has settled on having white nail varnish - she has made her mind up about that. She initially wanted white shoes/sandals but I suggested a nice pair of navy block heel sandals - I've have actually seen a pair online, she does like them too, but they are currently out of stock in her size at the moment.
I have also suggested a rose gold clutch bag. She has beautiful blue eyes (long light brown hair) and I'm thinking of dusky plum/gold tones for her eyeshadow, hopefully I'm in the process of finding someone to do her make up for her so I guess they'll have some ideas too. Does this all sound okay? I do think maybe she'd be better having a different coloured nail polish but she seems keen on white atm.

It it were for me, I'd go silver/rose gold.

If it was my DD at prom age, I very much doubt that is what she would want. I think she'd have chosen bright orange, shocking pink or something funky and patterned.
I do agree that it should be her choice (within whatever budget you set)

@Itsallhere

Bluevelvetstars, I haven’t got time to go through the op and paste all of the sentences where there was an element of control over the dd’s preferences but I could, there are many!

your the First comment.. after a mother comes on asking for advise..

You call her controlling..

Sad

Itsallhere · 10/05/2021 16:01

No idea what your agenda is here bluevelvetstars, plenty of others have said the same thing but you seem intent on having a go at me

Im not having a go.. I just believe OP was genuinely asking for advise.

Itsallhere · 10/05/2021 16:06

Whatever. My post encouraged the op to let her daughter decide. I didn’t call her controlling I said she seemed to be controlling the situation a bit. Trying to be helpful actually but you think what you want to

Fcuk38 · 10/05/2021 16:10

Navy and red are classic or cream/ white. If she’s a little funky she could have leopard print shoes. Pinks also go with navy. Actually any colour goes with navy.

DandelionRose · 10/05/2021 16:16

Personally I'd help her find the prettiest/nicest items in the colours she chooses, if she is happy for you to help with that. If she loves the idea of white sandals I'd be looking at lots of white sandals personally...

White accessories with navy sound lovely, Individual but fresh looking!

DandelionRose · 10/05/2021 16:17

(Also, with white shoes/sandals/bags you get all the beautiful wedding ranges to choose from!)

DandelionRose · 10/05/2021 16:18

Dune for example has some stunning ivory/white shoes in the wedding range.

newnortherner111 · 10/05/2021 16:45

Let her make her own decisions. I'm sorry to read that in the midst of the uncertainty of the pandemic, a prom is even being considered.

Alfiemoon1 · 10/05/2021 17:22

We are unsure if ds prom is going ahead as none of the venues will refund the deposit to the school if it cant go ahead and everything is so uncertain at the moment for such a large indoor gathering

allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/05/2021 17:24

Another vote for neon with navy! Neon pink or yellow shoes would look fab.

ElMacchiato · 10/05/2021 19:04

Navy and white sounds a good combination to me.

Pale grey

LoudestCat14 · 10/05/2021 19:38

Let her choose her own accessories! Black with blue looks blah.

harryandmarv · 10/05/2021 22:20

Thanks to those that has given some actual suggestions, you’ve been super helpful Smile

Dd has actually asked me for my suggestions so no it’s not like I’m telling her or controlling what colours she can & cannot wear, that’s just a pathetic assumption.

White nails and silver accessories I think. But yeah whatever she likes really!

I hope she has a ball 🌸💕🎉

FreekStar · 10/05/2021 23:52

I would say silver with Navy!

OP, it's normal for mums too help girls with prom dressing- it's probably the first time she's had to dress up like this, and if she's year 11 she's only 15 or 16.

Only on MN do children have complete autonomy over clothes from age 2 onwards, and anyone making suggestions for outfits is controlling and over-invested. Likewise with food.

FreekStar · 10/05/2021 23:55

I would be telling my dd that white nails look like you've painted them with tippex like we did back in the day during boring lessons!

Heaven forbid that a teenager should have complete autonomy over her prom outfit!!
Nishky · 11/05/2021 08:16

@Everyoneknows -agreed, it’s a bit off calling posters ‘pathetic’

I paid for my daughter’s make up but didn’t give the make up artist advice as to colours to use.

I also paid for a trial hair do session which I thought was ridiculous but in hindsight was brilliant because the trial curls fell out in 2 hours and the hairdresser fixed it for the night. So that was actually money well spent.

Totally. Parents of course get excited about these things but letting your child express themselves with white nails or shoes etc is really important. Being told that white nails look like tippex only shows how far removed a mother’s taste might be from her teenage daughters. White nails are a big thing! Fair enough to give an opinion and ideas if asked but the op really doesn’t read like that at all. It reads like the op is directing the girl away from what she has said that she wants. But if people trying to express this in a nice way are pathetic, then clearly those opinions are wasted on the op.
