After waiting over a year for highlights I was excited to go to the hairdresser yesterday. I asked for natural looking blond highlights and ended up with this, does it look as bad as I am thinking?

The hairdresser insisted on putting a dark brown in that it slightly darker than my natural mousy brown colour to 'stop me getting a shadow around my head'. Should I ask her to put some more blond highlights in to blend it more, try a toner or go somewhere else bearing in mind everywhere seems to be booked up for ages. Maybe it will look better as it grows out?

She also said it will blend better after a couple of washes, is this true?

I'm sorry but you really need to go back and complain.

tinkerbellvspredator · 09/05/2021 09:19

Speechless. That's awful.

Sorry don't know anything about how you correct that, hope someone else will help Flowers

Suzi888 · 09/05/2021 09:21

Too chunky in my opinion, the way it’s styled makes it look like stripes of brown colour against very blonde hair. Did you take a photo with you showing what you wanted? The brown will wash out /fade with each wash presumably? Depends what she has used. A hair salon did this to me once, the brown washed out and I was left with blonde hair but what the point of the brown stripes were I’m not sure.
I asked a for a refund (bad cut too) and the manager apologised and said she would do it again for free (I declined).

Laquila · 09/05/2021 09:22

In the nicest possible way, that is not natural-looking. It will blend better after a good few washes but the regularity of the spacing means it'll still be the same pattern, IYSWIM. Could you call the salon, making it clear you're very unhappy, and ask for colour correction (for free!) from a more senior stylist? If not then I'd cut your losses and go somewhere else!

Elieza · 09/05/2021 09:24

Sorry OP, those re NOT ‘natural looking blonde highlights’. To get a natural effect they should be very fine and lots of them. Those are big chunky ones. The brown looks like it’s too dark and contrasts too much with the blonde.

I’m really really sorry to say those look very bad indeed and nothing like what you originally asked for.

Luckyelephant1 · 09/05/2021 09:30

Sorry but yeah they look awful, reminds me of the chunky highlights that were all the rage in the 90's/early 00's. No idea what the point of those brown stripes are.

Go back and ask for a refund or a correction by a more experienced stylist.

Jasmine245 · 09/05/2021 09:30

Thanks all. She has offered to weave some more blond through the parting, do people think this is an ok solution? She works alone so there is not a more senior stylist I can go to. She had loads of good reviews so I don't know if I was just unlucky but I have had my hairhighted for years and it has always looked great and no other hairdressers felt the need to put brown in it.

Oh god, I see why you're unhappy

Procrastatron · 09/05/2021 10:06

Do you know if the brown is semi perm? Head and shoulders works wonders at stripping semi perm colour.

mrseddiehitler · 09/05/2021 10:16

Hi op, I had a half head of highlights yesterday too and I've attached pics of how mine looks. I know it's a bit stripey but it always is for the first week or so. I don't think yours are fine enough - as a previous poster said, they're far too chunky.

Oh dear OP that is bad! Unless you specifically took a picture of Geri Halliwell in circa 1998 she has done an absolutely shocking job, TBH i am not sure I would trust the person who did that to fix it. Could you ask ton see a more senior colourist at the same salon?

korawick12345 · 09/05/2021 11:57

Whoops - missed the part where you said she works alone. In that case I would suck up the cost and go elsewhere to get it fixed, i wouldn't let her near my hair again

Suzi888 · 09/05/2021 19:01

Are you naturally a brunette? Does the brown she’s used match your natural hair colour? Will it fade?
Working more blonde through probably would work, whether I’d want her to do it though I don’t know! I would probably very reluctantly let her do it but I’d never use her again.

BoomChicka · 09/05/2021 19:19

Shit, that's very year 2000, sorry OP! Complain and ask her to sort it out!

ShirleyPhallus · 09/05/2021 19:22

Sorry OP, but you’re looking like a member of Atomic Kitten circa 2002 with those

Definitely ask her to sort it out

mooonstone · 09/05/2021 19:22

This has to be the worst hair I ever seen

Don’t go back there. Frankly I would be opening a chargeback with my bank and getting a refund that way, the photograph shows a complete lack of reasonable care/skill

mooonstone · 09/05/2021 19:23

Unfortunately it will be more expensive to correct now. Especially as they’ve put that random dark colour through your hair - that will be an absolute pain to lighten

mooonstone · 09/05/2021 19:26

The more i look at it, the more I wonder if the hairstylist has even had training? It looks like something an amateur layperson would do at home

TheMostHappy · 09/05/2021 19:27

Blaaardy hell. How much she charge you for that!?

DeusEx · 09/05/2021 19:29

Has she accepted that it looks bad? If not, don’t go back, you’ll have to pay someone else to remedy the damage.

DeusEx · 09/05/2021 19:29

She shouldn’t even have charged you!

OppsUpsSide · 09/05/2021 19:32

Oh OP what did she do?! Does it look a bit better up or curled?

mooonstone · 09/05/2021 19:33

It doesn’t matter if the brown will fade in time. As will the blonde sections, so whilst the brown might be a shade lighter, the blonde will start to look brassy as the toner rinses away too. Your colour is supposed to be at its best when it’s freshly done, not a few weeks worth of washes later

Jasmine245 · 09/05/2021 19:58

Well I have washed it and it looks marginally better. Still pondering what to do though as I can't get any appointment anywhere for weeks at the moment due to covid but too scared to go back.

I don't think she has accepted it looks terrible. Her reply was 'Hi, no worries I had to put the brown through to stop you from getting the shadow around the head I can weave some more blonde through the partin to reduce the brown'.

The brown is not too far off my natural colour so maybe it will look a bit better as it grows out.

I wouldn’t even go back to her for a correction. She has no idea what she’s doing.
