Is this too white for a wedding guest?

After seeing discussion on this on another thread I'm worried this dress I've bought is now too 'white'- I thought the floral pattern made it ok, but maybe not... What do you think?
@PyongyangKipperbang I bet most have never heard of debretts and its outdated anyway , surely we have moved on a bit since then
in term of appropriate clothes as a wedding guest? Yes, we have.

It's absolutely fine not to wear tights, and navy or black are perfectly suitable, even the royals wear them.

In term of not upstaging the bride and staying away from white/ivory etc.? not so much. It's still scream of being pretty desperate if you do.

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:19

@PyongyangKipperbang i have been to plenty weddings where guests really dress up , I wouldn't even consider this majorly dressy even , you could wear it with some flip flops
I have been to loads if weddings where people wear flowery dresses and normally on a white background and maxi dresses are also pretty popular
People are a little too precious

bridgetreilly · 04/05/2021 23:19

this dress does look like she might a member of that Party.

I mean, anyone might turn up in an outfit the same or very similar to one of the mothers. It’s an ordinary dress, entirely suitable for anyone to wear to a summer wedding, and I just can’t believe anyone genuinely thinks there’s something ti take offence at in it.

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:20

@motherloaded I said most people and also most people I know do not hold the opinion on a white flowery dress
Its not plain white

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/05/2021 23:22

It’s literally in the “wedding guest” section on the website, ffs.

Ha. That reminds me of the summer when our local Sports Direct put a big tag saying SCHOOL SHOES on literally every pair of black trainers that they stocked, meaning that of course we then had to have quite a lot of conversations in September explaining that incredibly expensive high-top Air Force Ones are not school shoes just because Mike Ashley says so.

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:23

I wore an ivory dress to my sil wedding she loved it it was ivory with pink flowers and pink accesories , I looked zero like the bride as I didn't have a veil and a bunch of flowers in my hands for a start
I had lots of compliments about my dress ( prob because i had lost a few stone since some had seen me too , maybe i should of stayed fat as well incase I upstaged the bride that way )

LouNatics · 04/05/2021 23:24

Debrett’s Grin Did you really actually read a Debrett’s guide prior to going to your first wedding? Or did you go to an etiquette class? finishing school?

That’s so far out of most people’s frame of reference! Especially juxtaposed with the assertion on this thread that the upper classes really don’t care and it’s a very middle class thing to worry about....

Firmly working class, here and if I crack out the family wedding photos...my mother got married in a gold dress and my father wore brown flares. My grandmothers chose a brown skirt suit and a military uniform. My mother in law wore a lavender shade with a 70s perm and some massive specs. In this generation, no one has been married except my estranged brother in law and I wasn’t invited but it was in Vegas, so all bets are off.

No one cared what the guests wore.

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:24

@ThanksItHasPockets not the same thing and actually in my ds school they would be ok as they allow black trainers

Pinchoftums · 04/05/2021 23:25

Going from this thread 50% of people won't give a shit. 50% will think you are a bit of nob or worse. Potentially the bride will either not notice or at worst think you are trying to upstage her on her wedding day

If it were me I would like half the guests to think I was a twat but up to you.

Pinchoftums · 04/05/2021 23:26

I wouldn't! (But maybe you would in which case go for it!

GrannyRose15 · 04/05/2021 23:28

It's gorgeous. Go for it!

Honeyroar · 04/05/2021 23:30

I would be gutted if people thought that slightly frumpy dress looked like my wedding dress or bridesmaids dresses (sorry OP). I don’t think it looks remotely bridal, more like a 1970s nightie, but I’d possibly wear something less “bridal” than pale pink accessories with it to be safe. Sorry that probably sounds like I hate it, I don’t.

And come on, if you’re still not speaking to someone that wore white at your wedding two decades later you’ve really got some big mental issues!

skybluee · 04/05/2021 23:31

Why risk it if there's a decent chance it could be too white/cause upset?

Mamanyt · 04/05/2021 23:31

I wouldn't. I would absolutely buy it and keep it and wear it to any number of other events, but not a wedding. The colors are very pastel...perfect for a spring luncheon, but perhaps not "color-y" enough to distinguish it from "bride-y" attire. And my second wedding dress, when I wanted something that whispered "Bride" without screaming it, was very much the same style (which may be why I wouldn't, come to think of it).

Tambourina · 04/05/2021 23:32

It's fine

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:32

@Honeyroar I must admit I thought similar, although its very pretty its just does scream a little old fashioned to me and nothing like modern day wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/05/2021 23:33
@ThanksItHasPockets not the same thing and actually in my ds school they would be ok as they allow black trainers
It’s very much the same. Retailers aren’t arbiters of appropriateness.

FWIW we allow some black trainers too as long as they are completely black, eg plain black Nikes where everything is black including the swoosh. That’s not what our students were trying to get away with here.

NYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYN · 04/05/2021 23:36

No xx

worriedatthemoment · 04/05/2021 23:37

@ThanksItHasPockets but in this case I am sorry but this is not like any wedding dress i have seen in the last 30 years .
I can't believe people would think this looks like a wedding dress its covered in flowers not sequins
Retailers do know what wedding outfits are compared to wedding dresses
Like I said I think people are too precious that they would see this as too white

CervixHaver · 04/05/2021 23:51

What's the concern? Would the Bride be concerned that the Groom is going to run off with OP if she wears this?!

CervixHaver · 04/05/2021 23:56

@NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor

This Mumsnet obsession with outfits being 'too bridal' is a peculiarly middle class thing. Working and upper class people are less troubled by this kind of weird codified behaviour and just wear what they want secure in the knowledge that the bride will be having far too much fun to give a stuff what her guests are wearing. Nah mate. I’m as working class as they get, born and raised on a north eastern council estate. Most of us just know this is a dick move so don’t talk about it. And if you did show up at a geordie wedding in white you wouldn’t be leaving in white I know that.
Charming Hmm
ScrollingLeaves · 05/05/2021 00:03

No, I don’t think it is at all, but I think you should add some co-ordinating coloured accessories. In my opinion pink or green shoes etc would be very nice.

I think it is a lovely dress.

cabingirl · 05/05/2021 00:05

It's fine!

SaturdayRocks · 05/05/2021 00:05

@motherloaded

What did Liz Hurley do? I've Googled and can't find anything.

show her underwear trying to upstage the bride. Classy.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a woman showing her underwear at a wedding, cannot upstage the bride.
quizqueen · 05/05/2021 00:06

Why not just send the link to the bride and see if she has any objections instead of asking randoms on the internet!
