Does anyone have any recommendations for a collagen supplement that works and doesn’t completely break the bank, please?

I'd like to know this too

coronafiona · 03/05/2021 22:37

There are some on beauty and the boutique but I can't say if they work or not I've never tried sorry

bestbefore · 03/05/2021 22:43

There's an article all about collagen in good housekeeping mag which seems to say supplements aren't worth it, I'm no expert but thought it was interesting.

It’s cod science at its finest. You wee out excess protein you can’t store it and the body has no interest in you having flowing locks or plump skin after 35yo because your of little use reproductively so what’s the point in you being attractive? Nature’s very practical like this. We'll all lose a third of our collagen at menopause regardless and I don’t like it anymore than the next woman either.

If you want to preserve collagen levels in skin you need sunblock, not spf in day cream a proper sun lotion you’d take abroad applied daily, retinol or tretonoin and a red light led mask. Then add in a healthy diet low in processed sugar and no alcohol or smoking.

Please don’t waste your money though.

@bestbefore and @Fluffycloudland77 this is very disappointing - I wanted the magic results without the effort! Smile

Lolz. Don't we all! The article does say some of the creams are good...I've bought some of the new boots own label range and if nothing else it's a nice moisturiser!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/05/2021 09:06

I would also like results with no effort 😀. Bit of retinol slapped on at night and a mineral sunblock in the morning though, not a huge effort is it? In the grand scheme of things.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/05/2021 09:10

Mostly I’d like to live on Sauvignon blanc, ready salted crisps and chicken nuggets with chips but it’s not a plan for good health 😞

Rach247 · 04/05/2021 09:57

True true @Fluffycloudland77

My diet of marmite on toast and creme eggs could probably use some improvement.

Maybe retinol would be a good first step.

I’ve been taking a collagen supplement for over a year (for skin reasons but also because I have an inflammatory condition and it’s supposed to help) and the one thing I noticed recently is that my lips are plumper! When I used to smile I had no top lip but now I do! 😱 I don’t use anything that would cause this, like plumping lip glosses etc. so I’ve put it down to the collagen supplements! 😬

JackieWeaversBasket · 04/05/2021 10:25

I took them for 6 months and noticed no real difference. That coupled with the cost was enough reason to stop taking them.

LaBellina · 04/05/2021 10:26

No tips but I heard vitamin C helps the body to upkeep the collagen production it does by itself.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 04/05/2021 10:38

I have been taking Hunter & Gather Bovine Collagen powder in my coffee daily for about 6 weeks. I definitely noticed a difference! My hair was thinning quite a bit and it has definitely gotten thicker, and I'm losing far less than I used to (previously it would come it in clumps when I'd comb it and blow dry it after a shower. I recently had my hair done for the first time in 6 months due to lockdown and my stylist commented on how thick it had got and how I wasn't loosing very much any more. I'm a total convert now. It's amazing.

The brand I use is not a beauty brand and they don't claim to be. So no fancy packaging or marketing. But I've compared the ingredients with competitors and other beauty collagen brands and the Hunter and Gather brand I use exceeds the nutritional ingredient amounts on everything compared to the other brands.

It's flavourless and dissolves instantly in my coffee. I take it every day now and won't go without! hunterandgatherfoods.com/collections/collagen

Lobelia123 · 04/05/2021 10:48

I drink a liquid collagen supplement every day and its made a difference to me! Hair was thinning and lank thanks to the awesome journey of peri menopause.....now thicker and healthier than ever. Skin tone on my face also better, and my skin on thighs and butt also smoother. Its not a face lift, but I do see a difference - mostly I see it when I stop.

Thinnerlikeachickendinner · 04/05/2021 11:03

Mostly I would agree with @Fluffycloudland77 and also want to know is it okay to combine retinol and red light led?

However, I have been taking collagen supplements with reasonable consistency for a few months and have somewhat less joint pain (albeit combined with pilates) but most noticeably, much stronger nails. They had been splitting and weak since I had kids even though they are short and squoval and thumb nail had permanent split in it, this has disappeared.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/05/2021 11:45

I haven’t had a problem yet, red stimulates collagen production but without peeling.

Joints are important to the body. Joints are something your body can get excited about. It’s possible to have a very low protein diet in this country too due to our processed carby diet. Supermarkets would be tiny if you took out the aisles with processed food and snacks but left fresh food & pasta, rice etc.

Rach247 · 04/05/2021 11:47

Thank you @WineGetsMeThroughIt, I like it very much when someone else has done the research!

@Thinnerlikeachickendinner and @Lobelia123 and @igotdemons, what do you use?

OP posts:
igotdemons · 04/05/2021 15:16

@Rach247 I’ve been taking these. They’re not massively expensive and seem to do the job for me. My nails grow really quickly now, too. I haven’t noticed a difference with my hair yet as lost a lot of it last year due to extreme weight loss. It’s now starting to improve so am hoping this is supporting it behind the scenes ☺️

Laburnam · 04/05/2021 16:25

I drink Reverse Life, for someone that’s suffered with on going lower back issues it’s been an absolute miracle

What I've read says the complete opposite: supplements MAY work, creams definitely NOT.

"I have been taking Hunter & Gather Bovine Collagen powder in my coffee daily for about 6 weeks. I definitely noticed a difference! "

When did you notice it? I've been taking Vital Proteins for three weeks now and nothing yet.

After a couple weeks on the collagen powder I could definitely see results on my skin, and by about 4 weeks my hair was starting to feel thicker.

Thing is you won't really see results for at least 6 weeks or until your hair and nails start to grow and then you can see the change. As far as I've read and been told, supplements won't do anything for your hair and nails that have already grown because that's dead and already developed protein / hair / nails. You need to wait long enough for regrowth to see the difference it's making.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/05/2021 21:55

Wine - I've read the opposite - people seeing an effect on their nails before anything else. I'm not bothered at all about my nails and think my hair growing faster is a bad thing so I'm really only interested in getting an improvement in my skin, and maybe joints. Nothing yet after 3 weeks, but my skin is VERY dry at the moment.

Marie5678 · 09/05/2021 06:13

I use 1st phorm collagen with dermaval. I train and definitely noticed my joints didn't ache as much when taking it, my hair and nails are definitely better but collagen does take a little while to notice a difference. I also have used revive collagen powder from amazon which also has the 5 types of collagen. You need to make sure that the % of collagen you are getting is good I tried the capsules which had an extremely low dose and I noticed zero difference. But my go to is definitely the 1st phorm and the revive (from amazon) when I want to save a few quid

babyinthacorner · 09/05/2021 06:27

Following - I’m taking capsules after doing some research. Not sure if they’re having any effect yet...
