I need four(!) outfits for my best friend’s wedding this summer. She and her fiancé have Indian heritage so I was wondering whether anyone has advice on what’s in fashion on that “scene” currently (and where to buy online?) please.

I also need one floral maxi dress type of outfit for the henna ceremony, and a “wow” factor Western style gown for the reception! Please help, I don’t know where to start!

Having said that it’s quite easy to over do it - see pics of Justin Trudeau in India - he looked very nice but had basically dressed as a bride groom at every occasion Grin - if you go to a shop the staff will be able to advise you.

Many of the outfits on that Etsy link up thread are quite bridal as opposed to for a wedding guest.

Would something like this work? Disclaimer- I’m not Indian but it feels like it might be an easier wear than some of the more full in options, which are utterly beautiful but as a white English woman feel a bit intimidating to me :)

@Alternista

I think you’d be way under dressed if a guest wore that. It’s pretty but something you’d wear at home.

Alternista · 03/05/2021 14:46

Ah, ok. Fair enough! I am not very glam Grin

Pinktruffle · 03/05/2021 14:50

@Alternista that's somethi bg my 66 year old mum would wear around the house, defo not a wedding outfit for anyone not collection a pension.

paralysedbyinertia · 03/05/2021 14:55

You will need lots of bling, OP! Enjoy!

sashh · 03/05/2021 14:56

Just a thought OP book a pedicure, you will be spending some time with bare feet.

wizzywig · 03/05/2021 14:58

Check if there are religious requirements. A strapless gown may not go down well I some situations

Pinktruffle · 03/05/2021 14:59

If you wanted something less fancy, go for something like this - but avoid white, cream is fine. White is traditionally a funeral colour in most Indian cultures.

I think that that just encapsulates the difficulty of internet shopping for this. That’s the kind of outfit my mum would have wanted me to wear when I was younger to visit a random great aunt I hadn’t seen in a while. I wouldn’t have been seen dead in then or now. But if you’re not an Indian person shopping on the internet, there’s no way you’d know that.

Also the different events would require different types of clothes. I had a Gujarati Hindu wedding but without knowing exactly what functions have been arranged I’d be reluctant to advise on what you should wear. Also different families do things differently.

The best thing to is talk to your friend and if can arrange to go shopping with her. And try lots of things on as you’d be surprised as to what looks good.

karmakameleon · 03/05/2021 15:08

That’s re the blue outfit linked.

The white one may work for a party but my mum would have been very upset if someone had worn that to my wedding.

OP
The link below is to one of the online ships, I've linked to plus sizes because it has more styles to look at. I suggest you get an idea of the type of thing you want to wear and how much flesh you want to show.

Oh and do have fun shopping.

I’m Indian and a gown/ maxi dress really will be fine for like the reception

If you look at Coast they have maxi skirts for about £40 and matching sequinned tops which is pretty much a lengha

PinotPony · 07/05/2021 21:28

I bought my sari at a shop in Wembley. The staff were so helpful and encouraged me to go for pastel colours to match my pale skin and hair rather than the bold colours worn by many of the Indian guests.

I needed help to correctly fold the skirt and going to the toilet was a nightmare!

At the wedding I was surprised that many of the younger guests just wore party dresses. I felt a bit daft until one of the aunties said "you wear that sari very well" which made me beam! Wish I had chance to wear it more often...

I wore this to a wedding a couple of years ago - www.andaazfashion.co.uk/coral-pink-indian-wear-soft-net-anarkali-suit-lstv08827.html

I’d definitely go to Southall!
