The most elegant/classy diamond engagement ring cut?

alabaster11 · 28/04/2021 13:24

Not sure if this is the right place to post so apologies if not.

Is there some sort of standard of what the most "classy" cut is for a diamond engagement ring?

Just going through the process with OH now of choosing my ring and really unsure about which cut to go for! I like them all except emerald and oval.

IMO, all cuts of diamonds are classy 😁

I would definitely recommend going to try some on, to try and pinpoint some favourites. I chose my own engagement ring and was surprised that styles I’d already ruled out looked really nice on.

I found that ovals and emeralds are quite different in terms of sparkle, and some cuts hide inclusions better than others. There’s also your preferred metal to think about - what’s hard wearing, what matches your current jewellery etc.

Happy shopping!

Sexnotgender · 28/04/2021 13:37

I love emerald cut stones.

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/04/2021 13:40

One of my girlfriends has a boat cut diamond, it is exquisite.

Agree do try loads of styles. Remember the Cs, cut clarity colour carat. You want a clean stone, cut well, whatever the carat.

bendmeoverbackwards · 28/04/2021 13:48

Can’t go wrong with a beautiful brilliant cut. I like Princess cut too.

bubblebath62636 · 28/04/2021 13:48

I'd look into mined diamonds rather than lab grown.

More expensive but hold their value.

Then from there look into cut, clarity, carat etc.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 28/04/2021 13:51

I think much depends on the shape of your fingers/hands as to what works. You may have a particular cut in mind but it just might not work for you when you try it on?
Exciting stuff, have fun!Flowers

Personal opinion is that heart, pear and baguette shaped cuts are less classic/timeless than the symmetrical ones. But mine is a brilliant cut oval, so you probably don’t care what I think.

HermioneWeasley · 28/04/2021 14:24

Anything apart from heart shaped!

ZombeaArthur · 28/04/2021 14:28

You need to consider wearability too. Like a previous poster mentioned, not all cuts suit all fingers. I prioritised a cut that didn’t catch on everything, which can be both annoying and painful.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 28/04/2021 15:10

I would recommend sticking with a classic round brilliant cut, or perhaps looking into a cushion / radiant cut. I worked in luxury jewellery for 7 years throughout uni. Pear looks nice, but I would recommend in a pendant or earrings only because the pointy end often gets caught on clothing and scratches people (yourself included). The same goes for marquis cut. They're always catching on things. Princess cuz and emerald cut look nice and can be trendy at times but have less facets that a round and the other two cuts I recommend and because of that they'll sparkle less. When you have less facets and a more 'open' looking stone as in the emerald and princess and often ovals too you need to make sure the stone is the best clarity because imperfections and inclusions will be much more noticeable because there are less facets to distract from them. Think of it kind of like a window. You just see straight in. White gold and platinum will show the true colour and clarity of the stone more than yellow will, as the yellow gold always tends to reflect a slight yellow tinge on the stone anyway. That is why the claws holding the stone will always be white gold or platinum.

Biggest recommendation would be to go for something timeless and classic. Not too trendy. I can't tell you the number of people who came in after being married for less than 10 years wanting their engagement ring remodelled because it wasn't in style anymore and they didn't like it. Also make sure that the engagement ring you choose will sit nicely with a wedding band if you'll be wearing them together. There are a lot of engagement ring styles that don't sit well with a wedding band so try the two on together in order to avoid issues choosing one later on.

Congrats!

I think a round brilliant, asscher or cushion cut is beautiful. Not a fan of fashions like heart shaped diamonds but only you know what you will be happy with long term.
I think we need a photo when you've chosen Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2021 15:35

I’ve got a round brilliant solitaire and it still looks good.

But, if you fall in love with a pear shape then buy it.

Pinktruffle · 28/04/2021 15:44

@winegetsmethroughit excuse me for hijacking the threads little but could I ask your opinion on eternity rings?
I'll be getting one soon, I intend to wear it with my brilliant cut solitaire engagement ring and my wedding ring which is platinum with a solid stripe at the top and a row of channel set diamonds underneath. I wanted a full diamom set eternity ring but I'm worried it will be uncomfortable or catch on things - is that likely to be the case? Am I better going for a half eternity?

thelegohooverer · 28/04/2021 15:47

I think a round cut is timeless. But more important to me was sourcing a conflict-free diamond.

TheTeenageYears · 28/04/2021 15:47

Consider the setting and how secure it is, claws wear for example and stones can fall out. The setting can also make a huge difference to how a stone looks.

So I am in two minds on eternity bands. I do love the look, but you need to keep in mind that with a full eternity band it can never be sized. So if you gain / lose weight you may not be able to wear it anymore. If you wanted to get the look of a full eternity band but want the reassurance of being able to size it then perhaps look into a 3/4 eternity band. So the diamonds go further down the sides but the bottom of the ring does not have any diamonds. Do keep in mind though that because the way the stones are set these bands can't be sized up or down more than one full size really as it could cause the stones to come loose. The band may be resided at more of an oval shape than round as well to prevent them from becoming loose once sized.

Pinktruffle · 28/04/2021 16:30

@WineGetsMeThroughIt ahh thank you! I hadn't even thought about sizing. I have very slim fingers too, my wedding and engagement rings are 'I' and a tiny bit loose to be honest, 'H' was too tight though. 3/4 sounds like a great idea. My wedding ring only has diamonds held the way round and it annoys me when it spins to the wrong side

Pinktruffle · 28/04/2021 16:31

And thank you for the advice @WineGetsMeThroughIt

Your welcome. If you wanted to avoid that spinning around in the future one thing that we did quite a lot of was soldering the engagement and wedding bands together at the very bottom. That helps with the spinning around and prevents the two rings from rubbing and wearing on each other and also make sure the diamonds are always aligned and looking nice together.

I have a baguette solid diamond with a diamond halo. I would send a picture but it’s gone back to the shop to be sized down as he proposed not long after having DD and I’ve since lost the baby weight/swelling!

user1471548941 · 28/04/2021 20:31

My pear with a halo.

Think it’s possible that these are either your taste or not but I loved this shape over any other.

We went to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham and got far more for our money in terms of clarity and cut than we would have got online or on the highstreet.

This was 40% of the price our local jeweller quoted for the same ring of less good quality!

This is mine; I was wrong it’s cushion not baguette! I thought cushion was more square than rectangle! - on offer to which is annoying as it was initially over budget.. but now it’s not.. but he proposed last year 😂

All my rings have been from Jewellery Quarter in Birningham too, I got platinum high carat diamonds for the price of 18 carat white gold and much poorer quality diamond on the high street.

alabaster11 · 28/04/2021 20:55

Thanks all! I am really loving the cushion cut. Think we will go for that!

Once I've got it, I'll try to remember to post a pic on here!

I was give a cluster ring which I pointed out, wish I'd gone for an emerald cut solitaire now. Thr cluster ring is very dated now and looks quite cheap. It wasn't!
