What do I need to de-fluff curly hair?

Shezlon · 22/04/2021 17:49

I've tried so many creams, oils etc and nothing works to give me nice bouncy curls, it's always fluffy.
I only co-wash, don't towel dry (usually leave to dry naturally but recently have got hairdryer with diffuser). Use leave-in conditioner, curl cream, oil spray (Argan oil).
Is there a miracle cream out there that actually works?

Following! I'm desperate to try Cocanut which I keep seeing advertised on FB. Has anyone used it? It's very expensive.

PinkPlantCase · 22/04/2021 17:53

Mousse makes the biggest difference to how long my curls keep their shape for. I use Wella Shockwaves Curls & Waves on wet hair and just put some argon oil on before. I’ve never really got on with the hair creams.

Cookerhood · 22/04/2021 18:01

Cocunat (sorry, spelt it wrong!)

hamsterchump · 22/04/2021 18:24

If you want definition you need a strong hold gel or mousse. Girl gives more definition but mousse will give a little more volume at the cost of less definition. Cheap products are fine. Apply a generous amount to soaking wet hair and rake/comb through and then scrunch in. It should sound squelchy with product when you're scrunching. Then either allow to dry naturally or diffuse on cold. If you used enough product your hair should feel crunchy/crispy and hard once it's 100% dry (it'll take all day to dry if you don't diffuse though). Then scrunch your hair again (scrunch out the crunch) to break the gel cast and reveal defined, soft curls.

I like the shape of your cut and I don't think it looks fluffy. You have a wave rather than a curl and it looks lovely - very on trend.

Piglet92 · 22/04/2021 19:48

Mousse and gel to style but make you're you're using silicone free products if not you need shampoo to remove the buildup.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/04/2021 20:01

I tried all this co-wash, plopping etc on my dry curly hair. Load of rubbish. Went back to shampoo and conditioner, towel dry and scrunch some serum though it. Voilà, curl definition returned.

Aprilshowersandhail · 22/04/2021 20:05

Asda curly cream. Amazing!! On just about dry hair!

secretgirl · 22/04/2021 20:09

Your hair looks like mine but shorter. I recommend a gel like shock waves in the red tube, number 5 hold I think. Or a mousse like the shockwaves mentioned or the John frieda mousse for curls.
I also spent months doing curly girl method and it was awful. Just an expensive racket.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/04/2021 20:10

Hershesons everything cream works on my fine curls, without irritating my eyes or going crispy ( mousse does both those things to me)

Tiredbadger · 22/04/2021 20:16

Olew curl cream works well as long as you only use a really small amount.

SchrodingersPomp · 22/04/2021 21:00

Oh, I've been trying for years - my hair is a cacophony of different weights, textures and curl patterns, the CG method was absolute bobbins and I looked like a scarecrow.

My hair has thinned with menopause, so after washing now my choices are pouffy frizzy waves, awkward frizzy curls or straightened...yet still pouffy. If only I were a high-cheekboned slim beauty (and not a fatty with a moon face) I'd shave it off.

Shezlon · 22/04/2021 21:07

It usually looks a lot better straightened but I'm trying to embrace the curl. It's very fine and has always just looked rubbish when curly.
I've experienced crispy hair from mousse in the past and hated it so don't have any mousse or gel but I'm willing to give it a try.

Once hair is dry you scrunch again until the product you put in it has been scrunched out if you know what I mean . Then you will have defined soft curls

Twinkie01 · 22/04/2021 21:22

Eco gel is brilliant. It doesn't go crispy and it gives you really good clumps.

JaceLancs · 22/04/2021 21:47

Best I found was osis twin curling cream now sadly discontinued
I now use osis curl honey no 3 cream which is best alternative I’ve found
I wash and condition then pat dry with towel putting cream in when quite damp and leave to air dry
Once a week I use a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment as well

ladygindiva · 22/04/2021 21:51

I use vo5 anti frizz cream, it's amazing and cheap as chips

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/04/2021 21:52

Twisted sista curl cream works for me, or a serum but I don’t like the crispiness of gel

dun1urkin · 22/04/2021 21:54

Yes yes, you need to scrunch out the crunch. I was skeptical but it does the trick really well.
I’ve got fine hair that’s a tiny bit curlier than yours. A small dab of boots curl creme mixed in with a generous dollop of wilko cheapo strong hold gel works best for me.

Asda Dona curl cream ? Do you have a link for that ?
JulietMadeChutney · 23/04/2021 07:57

Aussie Instant freeze here s good because it is CG approved and doesn't have glycerine in it either.

I have very fine hair too and this isn't too heavy for it.

I apply (generously) and comb through with a wide tooth comb...I find it helps my hairs "align" which means I get less flyaways. Then I scrunch up from below (lots of squelching noises) to help the curl form. Leave to dry/diffuse. If you diffuse be careful not to fluff/disturb.

Hard, crunchy "cast" is your perfect result - and then gently scrunch it again. The crunch goes but you are left with soft, defined curls.

You may need to experiment a bit with product. I have to avoid coconut (gives me frizz). When I started the CGM with the FBook group (how militant) I noticed that a lot of people loved the Aussie and also the UG curl jelly here. So that is what I started with.

Shezlon · 23/04/2021 09:10

Oh interesting, I avoid combing after washing because I thought that made it fluffier. Right, I've ordered a couple of things to try, will report back!

My hair doesn't like co washing. I get great hold from V05 gel. It's on offer at Boots. Recently tried Eco gel but it didn't hold.

I do need a fair bit of gel though in my hair.
Have you tried a Denman brush? I've heard good things about them.

Silverparting · 23/04/2021 09:15

Juliet makes a great point about Glycerin too. I'm going to have to try products without this soon as I'm prone to frizz.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 23/04/2021 09:19

I have £50 worth of cocunat sat on my shelf. It does nothing for my hair
I'm currently using floral and curl curl activating lotion with some success. I get 2 nice days then it goes frizzy. I'm going to order the gel to try on top
Only curls worked for me but gave me an itchy head. That's probably just me, I can itch for England
