Genuinely interested - this is a woman who was on the tv in the late 90s, never been more than a size 6 and rarely leaves Kensington.
I’m 35 years old, two kids, my friends and I shop anywhere from Reiss to Pretty Little Thing. Tbh we shop at the same places as my 40+ year old colleague and my older friends teenage children- there are no longer shops per age only budgets.
I’m baffled as to who on bbc breakfast thought she would resonate with the tv audience - it pretty much sums up why place like marks and Spencer’s can’t shift clothes.
Am I wrong, does she still hold gravitas in the style world?

"I think we've all got a bit over obsessed lately with whether something suits us which is not, I believe, something real and objectively verified but really just means how closely a garment helps us conform to a fashionable ideal.

Of course we live in the real world and 'flattering' is always a consideration but, if taken to extremes, I think it strips away much of the fun of getting dressed."

What do you mean by "lately". Dressing to flatter your figure was a much bigger idea decades ago than it is now.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/04/2021 20:10

"I found that much more positive than Gok Wan’s frankly cringeworthy “ooh look at those bangers” schtick."

Yes, that was awful. I'm gay so I can grope women. Erm, no!

CornishLover · 21/04/2021 20:48

Trinny and Suzannah are awful for self esteem. They grope and grab as did Gok.
The sharp nosed, blond glasses wearing severe mistress fashion makeoverer wasn't that great either.
Lorraine Kelly's guy dresses women for a photoshoot in Women's Weekly or Chat! not for practical real world women.
The lot of them are dire.

Floisme · 21/04/2021 20:57

Do you think so? That's not my recollection at all. I guess I was thinking about threads on here over the last couple of years: there seem to be far more 'I'd love to wear xx but I can't because of y' than there used to be.

I've been into clothes since the 60s and What Not To Wear was the first time I'd ever seen any explanation of body shape and why some things suited you and others didn't. Until then it had all seemed kind of like alchemy to me and I'll always have a soft spot for T & S for that reason- except I now think it's in danger of going too far.
Personally I think there's more to clothes than wearing what flatters - I think it can also be about self expression and creativity and sometimes just having a laugh and, in that respect, I think they missed a trick.

CirqueDeMorgue · 21/04/2021 21:02

I'm currently wearing blue tie dye joggers and love them, I don't think she can help me.

SarahBellam · 21/04/2021 21:06

I really like her. She’s clearly as mad as a box of frogs and doesn’t give two fucks. She shows off her £10 bag in the Zara sale as happily as she shows off her £1,000 Chanel bag. She doesn’t apologise or try to hide who she is. I think she would do my nut in if I had to live with her but I like getting the occasional glimpse into her world.

VanCleefArpels · 21/04/2021 21:10

@PawBlimey

I don’t follow ‘style advisors’ so no comment on that, but I think it’s laughable Trinny hawks make-up and skincare when she has a face full of filler and Botox.
So if you have Botox / fillers you don’t need to look after your skin and/or not allowed to use makeup? Oookaaay 🙄
PinkSpottyBalloon · 21/04/2021 21:50

I find her very entertaining to watch.

CoalHouseDoor · 21/04/2021 21:52

I like her too. Her advice on layering gilets and coats if you’d got too fat for the coat was life changing.

I’ve picked up loads of tips from her and I’m the polar opposite of her height and colouring.

What I do love is her incredible generosity with ‘tricks.’ Using belts, blusher, trainers, colours, it’s usually a revelation and always amusing.

Susannah I can leave tho.

By more “relevant” do you mean “younger”, OP?

@DrinkFeckArseGirls

I took "relevant" to mean "in touch with the styles people like at the moment". That's nothing to do with age. Older people can be very plugged into that, and equally younger people could not be.
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/04/2021 07:54

Thanks for all the responses- no I don’t mean out of touch due to age, I meant trends. I aligned my argument to marks and Spencer’s, not really in touch with current styles. Trinny is very chic but no one, regardless of age, that I know or see dresses like her. Her fashion and styling seems very much of the era I remember her from. Like I said imo there isn’t that age divide like there was when I grew up, people 3 decades apart shop from the same stores now.
No slur on the woman herself just my opinion, but I see many people do still look to her for advice.

Fair enough BreakfastOfWaffles and OnlyFoolsnMothers. Her business employes mainly “young” people, young as in millenials, not toddlers Smile, so I’m sure she’s up to date on what fashion trends are.

Her knowledge of basics of how to dress/ colour schemes/ contrasts and women’s shapes it second to none. Knowing what works for you and not blindly following fashion is not a bad thing. She dressss for her shape and she does buy modern clothes so I don’t think she’s stuck in the past.

Gen Z or whatever surely dress differently but that’s not her target market and at 38 not my interest either. I bet though she will soon wheel out her daughter who will give advice to teenagers/ 20-somethings on what to wear Grin

beguilingeyes · 22/04/2021 12:20

I used to love Trinny and Susannah...a lot of what they said about body shape and whatnot made a lot of sense to me.

BUT...she's toxic to me now because of her relationship with Charles Saatchi. He's a shareholder in her business and I want nothing to do with that man.

If we're allowed to judge India Knight because of her relationship, then why not Trinny Woodall.

Bluntness100 · 22/04/2021 12:24

@ZaraW

I read somewhere she is a size 12 not a size 6 there's a big difference.
Unless she’s gained a lot of weight which it doesn’t appear she has, she’s max a size six. I saw her at Heathrow awhile ago and she’s one of the thinnest women I’ve ever seen.
ExitChasedByABee · 22/04/2021 12:27

I thought her name sounded familiar. Did it a quick google and she’s still dating Nigella Lawson’s ex-husband, Charles Saatchi. I am sure I remembered that there were pictures of him with his fingers around Nigella’s neck and then some time later I saw the name Trinny linked to Saatchi Confused This was a while back. I googled that too and turned out I wasn’t misremembering it.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/04/2021 12:30

She’s an M in Zara - must be around a UK 10 then. I’m a 9 Hmm and go between S and M there - M on top.

midsomermurderess · 22/04/2021 13:05

I don't see what relevance who she is dating had to do with the matter in hand.

No way she’s a ten, I’ve seen her up close in the flesh, trust me, I’m a ten to a twelve she’s much much thinner than i am.
RampantIvy · 22/04/2021 13:33

and the messages about proportion, colour and shape were, and remain, bang on. I learned loads from them

I agree. I remember them showing how much difference wearing the correct size supportive bra made to an outfit, and that I could wear a sleeveless top with cut away shoulders to balance out my pear shape.

ExitChasedByABee · 22/04/2021 13:48

@midsomermurderess

@midsomermurderess I am not sure if you’re referring to me or another poster. But actually, come to think of it, since you questioned the relevance, if she’s dating someone who has openly been abusive and she has a large following, then who she is dating will have some relevance to those who are her followers, especially those who are young and/or impressionable. It’s certainly not relevant to me, I just thought the name Trinny rang a bell.

I've just watched her try on session for Zara which was filmed last month. She tried on size 10 jeans but says she's usually a size larger. She's slim but no way is she super thin.

beguilingeyes · 22/04/2021 14:16

It's relevant to me because of his past and the fact that he's involved in her make-up line, financially.
Her willingness to overlook his abusive past puts me off anything to do with her.
'What first attracted you to billionaire Charles Saatchi?'

Devlesko · 22/04/2021 14:25

Does she have any credentials?
I'm petite and get my style advice from down to earth people on youtube.
I can't associate with these upper mc wannabes

What is ‘awhile’ ago?
She has been doing shops for the last couple of years in Zara and wears a size 12. She said she used be a size S years ago but has been wearing size M for the last couple of years. She has sometimes tried side L (Zara’s crazy sizing). I imagine size M would still mean she is very slim as she is five foot 10 I think. Generally in other clothes, she wears size 10-12 depending on the brand.
