How to help a teenage girl with facial hair bleaching - or what?

DD is 14 and has a slight moustache which she is starting to get self-conscious about and is covering with foundation.

I've never had this at all, so have no idea what the best thing to do is - can anyone help? She also has eczema so nothing too strong.

As a teen I always used Jolen cream bleach. Never had a bad reaction, although I don’t have eczema. Wax strips, marked 'sensitive' made my skin go very pink and angry. Recently a friend did threading for me, which is painful, but at least the redness fades quickly. Now I'm just embracing the Frida Kahlo look.

Is an IPL an option? It apparently works best on light skin with darker hair. They are quite expensive to buy but may work out far cheaper in the long run if used regularly and if it gets rid of the hair. Especially if you would use it too!

I am unsure if it would irritate her eczema.

Hadenough21 · 19/04/2021 18:06

I would take her to have it threaded or waxed at a decent salon with hot wax. I use Veet but I wouldn’t recommend for teen or sensitive skin, it’s quite burny!

HPmagic · 19/04/2021 18:07

Waxing is the best option she can easily learn this herself with the very facial strips, if you bleach it it still may shout with makeup on .

TaraR2020 · 19/04/2021 18:07

Threading. Quick, cheap, effective.

Mellonsprite · 19/04/2021 18:35

Yes get it waxed or threaded. Bleaching won’t work and be obvious.
IPL or laser hair removal when she’s older too.

PresentingPercy · 19/04/2021 18:37

IPL at a decent clinic. Preferably one run by qualified medical staff. I had the same with DD1 and going down a temporary route (wax, threading and bleach) is pretty awful for a teen. It’s better to speak to a qualified professional, especially with the skin condition. Plan the sessions and it will last much longer with just the odd top up.

Dozer · 19/04/2021 18:39

Hair removal cream, for sensitive areas, with small patch test and v careful timing.

Dozer · 19/04/2021 18:39

Agree that bleaching is pointless.

nekoatsume · 19/04/2021 18:40

Thank you everyone, I will sort out some waxing/threading for now and look into IPL for later.

Dermaplane razors might be worth a shout? I use them for peach fuzz, they’re effective and cheap as chips.

Handmaid2019 · 19/04/2021 18:59

I use this on my upper lip, it's so good! Hair doesn't grow back thick and completely pain free

25yearsnhsworker · 19/04/2021 19:02

Philips lumea would help she would have to shave it first though.

25yearsnhsworker · 19/04/2021 19:04

Or Google flawless hair remover haven't used one but someone mentioned it being good at work today.

Howzaboutye · 19/04/2021 19:15

Lidl or aldi IPL next time they are in stock. About £60 and it works. Takes a while, but much better than bleaching. Bleaching will give sun damage then the hairs will grow back darker.

HumunaHey · 19/04/2021 19:19

@handmaid2019 What is the product called?

withpeaceandlove · 19/04/2021 19:42

Yes to @Handmaid2019 suggestion. Pain free too so there'll be no obvious irritation, they sell them in Asda

AlohaMolly · 19/04/2021 19:47

You don’t say what your DD’s skin colour is OP.

Like a PP, I used Jolen bleach right into my early 20s, because that’s what my DM used. However, my DM is Caucasian and I am mixed race with olive skin, so I ended up just looking a bit like I had a blonde moustache instead of it just blending in IYSWIM?

I’m having flashbacks to a year 9 English class where some bright spark teacher thought it an excellent idea to use an advert for jolen for critical reading or something. Cue a lot of mixed race/Asian teen girls shrinking in their seats and trying to inconspicuously cover their top lips SadSad

I use veet now but fuck me if I don’t end up with chemical burns on my face about 70% of the time, so probably best not to follow my advice...

MuchTooTired · 19/04/2021 19:50

Eyebrow razors get rid of mine! Very easy to do, and very effective. Much less painful than waxing/threading. Think they’re about £5 for a pack of 12 on amazon.

PresentingPercy · 19/04/2021 21:21

How can she wax with a skin condition? Just a very bad idea.

ottersnowsun · 19/04/2021 21:49

I WISH I had a Philips lumea when I was that age. At the ripe old age of 40 I finally don't have a moustache. After YEARS of horrible bleaching.

Sorry I didn't realise my screenshot didn't have the name on it! It's a JML flawless hair remover Smile

PresentingPercy · 20/04/2021 08:57

Eczema on her face OP? DIY on damaged or thin skin is possibly going to be problematic. You need to read up on strength of pulse and frequency of use.

DonLewis · 20/04/2021 09:00

Hollywood browser and Phillips lumea. It will change her life. Maybe not immediately (although she'll be less hairy) but in years to come, when she realises just what a favour you did her.
