How to help a teenage girl with facial hair bleaching - or what?

nekoatsume · 19/04/2021 17:41

DD is 14 and has a slight moustache which she is starting to get self-conscious about and is covering with foundation.

I've never had this at all, so have no idea what the best thing to do is - can anyone help? She also has eczema so nothing too strong.

I wouldn't advise waxing. I find it is too hot and I always react to it. Same with veet /immac, skin becomes inflammed. Iuse a mini epilady, painful but works.

I'm also wondering what to do about my tash. I've only ever bleached it with jolen. But as I get older it's becoming ever more luxurious. They are now some of my best hairs. I'm also spending more time plucking my chin (daily) than my eyebrows (none).

The jml thing, is it just a small electric razor? Dermaplaning is also just posh shaving really isn't it? So I could just shave it off. How long does it take to come back though and isn't stubble a serious issue? Or do you just accept you have to do it every day?

I've wondered about the Philips lumea before but they are SO expensive. And I'd have to let the hair get dark I think which I'm not willing to do.

Wax, I'm not sure I could hack it. I have only tried to wax my legs once, and it was awful. I don't want to have to keep going to a salon.

Handmaid2019 · 20/04/2021 09:40

With the jml it doesn't grow back stubbly, I use it maybe once/twice a week. I'm not sure if it's a shaver but honestly it's changed my life! Used to get it waxed but you'd have to let it grow and it was awful I was so aware of it. I think foundation made it stand out more too!

Handmaid2019 · 20/04/2021 09:41

JML also do an eyebrow shaped/shaver thing. That didn't work on my brows at all, I think they're quite thick hairs. Whereas on my upper lip they're finer but with the odd dark hair.

Jolen cream bleach makes the hair invisible against my pale skin. It doesn't have the same effect on darker skin.

I've never had skin sensitivity in general but it would tingle and leave the skin a bit pink for 5 mins or so after use.

I think it would be worth a try before going for the salon route because it is so easy to do it yourself. If it works for her then it would be a brilliant solution.

Sensitive hair removal cream every few weeks.Doesnt grow back dark and easy to use

aliloandabanana · 20/04/2021 10:50

Try a bleach first, as others have suggested. I find Boots own brand gentler than Jolen.

I wouldn't wax - it's obvious once the hair starts to grow back and it might make her more self conscious.

AmberRoseGold · 20/04/2021 10:53

Teens are apparently more prone to pigmentation (due to hormones, same as chloasma from pregnancy). So I was advised to delay laser until 16 or so. We will be going with a combo of veet, jolen, and Korean mini face razors until then. Maybe hot waxing (the one without fabric strips).

scully29 · 20/04/2021 11:02

veet facial hair removal cream from boots its super easy and no bother easiest thing ever. just follow the instructions on the packet, takes minutes to do.

CombatBarbie · 20/04/2021 11:28

My DD uses the veet sensitive cream, the one designed for bikini areas

SarahBellam · 20/04/2021 12:55

Don’t bleach. She’ll look like The Lorax. Try wax strips and read the instructions. Remember to pull the skin tight and pull fast. Do each side separately. Takes a few seconds and lasts for months. My upper lip was too sensitive for threading. I found it excruciating.

JustGiveMeGin · 20/04/2021 14:53

Facial epilator? She can use it as and when she needs to.

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/04/2021 14:58

If she had light skin and dark hair the Philips Lumea is the absolute best thing ever. I've had a tache since my early teens and finally, finally at 39, I don't have to worry about it anymore. I can wear lipstick! (When we stop wearing masks...)

Although TBH the shaving has been a revelation too, I mostly just shave in the shower once a week or so, and IPL when it starts coming back thick. After a year it's much lighter and easier to manage.

I used to bleach because my mum did. It just makes it orangey blonde, especially in sunlight. Then I switched to threading, which is brilliant but I really needed it weekly to keep on top of my hair.

gooseygoosey12345 · 20/04/2021 15:59

Don't wax if she has sensitive skin, I'd probably go for threading, no chemicals or ripping skin off that way! Plus I think it works better too. She can also learn to do it herself fairly easily which is handy.

You don't have to wait for the hair to get dark. As it flashes at the hair just under the skin. The daunting bit is shaving it like a man! Shave it with a good quality man's razor, use the lumea and ta-dah!

It will come back very slowly and very patchy but you won't see it.

My hair grows v fast so I did a quick flash every week and now after a few months If I remember I will do it every month and it's has basically gone. And what does come back is fine and not stubbly. It doesn't suddenly turn into stubbly beard because you shaved it. Or like when you shave your legs.

Best thing I ever did and I've been bleaching since I was 14 😕. I do my forehead, sideburns as well as body.

aliloandabanana · 20/04/2021 17:03

Facial bleach doesn't miraculously take all pigment out of your skin, as some posters seem to think! It bleaches the hair. If there's an enormous amount of hair there then it could look weird, but there won't be or it would have been an issue years ago.

Waxing or shaving it will result in stubble showing through, which looks awful. I've noticed it on people who wax (and I don't make a habit of staring at faces - it was very obvious).

Kaboomba · 20/04/2021 17:34

I use a dermaplaning blade for my facial hair, could be an option, it's cheap and she can do it whenever she feels she needs to without waiting for an appointment.
