To think M&S are finally on the right path?

M&S online are now stocking special collections by:

  • Sosandar
  • Ghost
  • Jaeger
  • Hobbs
  • Phase 8
  • Nobody's Child

They seem to be adding new brands reasonably frequently that all actually fit with a good target market for them.

I'm suddenly seeing loads of things on their website I actually really like!

@ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel

Marks and Spencer need to realise that they are not the arbiter of fashion but the death knell of style.

So basically, M&S adopting a brand or a style that is fashionable or stylish won’t elevate M&S. It’ll just kill whatever kudos that style or brand has stone dead.

The only time stylish people ever wear anything from M&S is to prove they have enough style to counteract the M&S ness. To pull it off to the stent that no-one would ever guess it was M&S.

The aim of the game there is for the person to wear M&S, be complimented on the garment and say “oh, M&S” with a certain twinkle in their eye that says both “I am an alchemist” and “gotcha”.

M&S will never be a cool kid. Not even in that way really uncool, weird kids can be when they are doing their own thing unconcerned about it’s coolness. They just do it because it’s enjoyable or interesting or because they have standards.

That’s why sometimes vintage St Michael stuff is cool— it harks back to. Time when Markies didn’t care about being cool.

It cared about quality, standards and keeping it’s UK based factory workers in a job for life. Not about whether some bint on Instagram likes their lastest pair of £20 polyester trousers that cost 20o to make.

Dh says M&S is shapeless clothes.

It’s the polyester I hate, and all the acrylic. I’m 43, I need natural fibres.

I’ve just bought 4 long sleeve cotton tops from coast for around the house & they're perfectly acceptable. £7 each in the sale 🤷🏻‍♀️.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/04/2021 08:54

@LizzieMacQueen they have in my local market town shopping centre Sad. Still in the local department stores.

RampantIvy · 17/04/2021 08:57

I was in our local, small M and S yesterday, and could have bought up half of the shop.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/04/2021 09:01

M&S does still do niche basics. The unlikely candidate is Per Una jeans which fit me perfectly. I have tried on up to 30 pairs of other brands in a good department store and none of them fit.

In the last month I have ordered white jeans from: Boden, Seasalt, (and their linen wider leg versions too) and sent them all back. I have just tried on a pair of M&S PU ones and absolutely perfect. My biggest gripe about M&S trousers is why they never have "long" in stock - they always have to be ordered.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2021 09:12

@KoalaOok I've ordered a few things from Sosanda and whilst they are ok I have always been disappointed the quality of the fabric and finishing.

They scrimp on the fabric so the edgings are always just that little bit off. The sleeves and cuffs are always a bit tight - I'm a 14-16 so not huge but definitely not skinny like the models!

They use very thin models in their pics so they do look good in the clothes - in their catalogue the owners pose in the clothes too and look very different!

In my humble opinion It'd help if they used a bit of Lycra in their fabrics - pretty much everything is made in unforgiving polyester.

I think they are expensive for what they are but get attention because their designs are a bit different (although they are getting a bit sanely now).

If you're skinny and slim limbed I'm sure Sosander would be good for you.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2021 09:14

@wheresmymojo the sosander items on the M&S website aren't exclusive to M&S, I've already seen them in the sosander catalogue that comes through my door!

KoalaOok · 17/04/2021 09:18

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn thank you. Shame about the quality as their price point seems quite high. Unfortunately I am not skinny and slim limbed! They've popped up on next online too.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2021 09:38

@KoalaOok give them a go - I have got a couple of things that worked on my chubby frame - but I have sent back more than I've kept. I'd never pay full price for their clothes though - the fabrics and finish aren't worth it.

KillingMeHardly · 17/04/2021 09:40

Gosh, is it just me who thinks those Ghost dresses are hideous? They look no different to Per Una!

KoalaOok · 17/04/2021 09:40

Thanks, I'll give them a whirl!

Parker231 · 17/04/2021 09:44

M&S clothes = nightmare. Too much viscose and polyester. Cheap fabrics and poorly made. Some of the designs are hideous. They try and be fashionable but miss the mark, by a mile. Good for knickers and socks.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2021 10:19

@Parker231 that is awful... reminds me of a dress I'd put on a toddler.

M&S should stop trying to be trendy and concentrate on providing women with well cut basics. They keep trying to compete with clothes that you can get in Topshop - which is a much younger audience who won't step inside M&S.

When will they get it that women come in different shapes and sizes. We shouldn't have to wait until the style that suits us comes back into fashion.

M&S used to offer an online service where you could put in your size and preferences and they'd show you things that would suit you. They had to stop it when they realised they were telling you your shape needed a v-neck with a 3/4 length sleeve and fitted waist but weren't actually offering anything other than round neck, sleeveless square shaped tops.

There was a company that used to provide great basics online. You could buy a top with a round/ square/ cowl/ wrap over neckline in a range of colours. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the company Blush M&S could make a killing if they offered that kind of thing in store.

I have a big bust - I need clothes with a v-neck and a defined waistline. The style at M&S for months has been high neck/oversize/ frill so there is nothing for me to buy! They need to provide more styles not a sea of the same.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/04/2021 10:50

And colours. They need to appreciate that not everyone can wear on trend colours. As a winter I cannot wear: brown, beige, yellow, orange, khaki, cream, etc. Pick up so many nice things in those colours that I would buy if there was a black, teal, deep crimson, etc.

Gingernaut · 17/04/2021 10:53

I've been in store and Per Una have some lovely Spring gear.

Still bummed they're pushing the slash/boat neckline though.

All I want is some V-neck 3/4 sleeve T-shirts.

Juliettbravo · 17/04/2021 10:58

@Parker231 thing is that doesn't look much different from some of the shapeless stuff produced by Toast. Only a lot cheaper.
Isn't a buffet dress like they made on sewing bee last week ?

dreamingofsun · 17/04/2021 11:35

I like their jeans and the sports and swimming wear. decent prices and well made and will hopefully last.

BUT if any M&S buyers are reading this.....why have a fantastic range of towels in loads of different colours if you dont have a pedestal mat to match? I'd buy loads off you for my new bathrooms but not if i cant match the mats......

myrtleberry · 17/04/2021 11:40

I thought that these brands were only going to be online, but I saw Ghost dresses on display in a large M&S yesterday.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 17/04/2021 11:41

I never buy clothes at M&S anymore

Last few items I bought were Primark quality at best

No point

Parker231 · 17/04/2021 11:57

www.marksandspencer.com/pure-linen-floral-midi-pinafore-dress/p/clp22526579?color=MULTI

Does anyone wear a pinafore -£65!

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 17/04/2021 13:11

I won’t be shopping at M&S again until they make their changing rooms single sex.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/04/2021 13:13

@Parker231 my 22 year old dd loves a pinafore but not with flowers on!

TeaAddict235 · 17/04/2021 13:35

So essentially M&S are becoming Debenhams/Alders/House of Fraser by stocking lots of concessions?

Could spell the end if they are not careful.

Love Jaeger though and also love natural fibres

KarensChoppyBob · 17/04/2021 13:37

I see loads of pinafores and dungarees out and about and not just on my DD's generation.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2021 13:37

@RosesAndHellebores I remembered the site that you can buy any colour under the sun! It's www.kettlewellcolours.co.uk/products/all
