I often look at this board, and see these things mentioned time and time again, is this the secret MN uniform? Are these things really that popular outside of this little community?

  • leggings
  • bright jewellery
  • getting colours done
  • 'slick of bright lippie' (always lippie, never lipstick)
  • stitchfix style boxes

Also, at any given opportunity, they will tell you how much they hate Charlotte Tilbury and that Pillow Talk is an awful colour that makes them look dead.

What have I missed?

I always think there’s actually a real diverse crowd here, in that one minute someone is asking where to get the best leggings from and the next someone is saying they wouldn’t be seen dead in leggings.

Some people will say White Stuff is their go to shop, but others decree it ‘frumpy’. Some really like the colour analysis idea whereas others think lots of contrived colour is a bit naff and prefer black and grey.

Some people are throwing off skinny jeans as fast as they can, for others it will take much longer and some will be buried in them.

I think people on here range from really trendy to just asking a basic shopping question. Everyone has a different opinion when a pair of shoes or a dress is posted. The board is used by a wide range of people, diverse in age and style and shape. I love it.

I agree about Pillow Talk though! Nothing here has made me want to buy Charlotte Tilbury Smile

PoTheDog · 14/04/2021 13:46

You only have to look at the "what I'm wearing today" threads to see that there really isn't a uniform.

The leggings and stitch fix threads are as a response to lockdown I imagine, and most of the SF threads are people pushing their own referral codes.

The lipstick threads are full of people who love lipstick and of course will occasionally like something bright, but you probably don't get much crossover with the posters on that thread with the leggings/loungewear threads.

PurpleDaisies · 14/04/2021 13:48

I haven’t really noticed those things as particularly popular. If anything, leggings are disliked on lots of threads I’ve seen.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 13:56

Leggings and joggers are very popular where I live. Not normally MN leggings though. Usually slightly see through with a thong underneath, and a not athletic body.

Saw someone in slightly see-through light-coloured joggers yesterday.
Not sure if she is on MN.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 13:58

To Charlotte Tilsbury add The Ordinary. I have been to both shops and couldn't ge out fast enough.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 14/04/2021 15:42

I only started properly looking at the style and beauty board a few months ago. I haven’t noticed the ‘sameness’ that you describe. Yes, those things are mentioned, but certainly not by everyone .

I don’t wear leggings.
I have never looked at Stitchfix.
I’m not sure what you mean by bright jewelry - costume jewelry?
I wear bucketloads of lipstick, not a slick.
I mostly only wear black or navy.

Mankyfruitbowl · 14/04/2021 15:48

Not sure if we've been frequenting the same board tbh! Most of the things on your list seem to be roundly mocked on here, particularly the phrase "slick of bright lippie", which I see often on Instagram.

Leggings divide the room, as do StitchFix boxes. Actually the reason I keep coming back here is the difference of opinion and tastes.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/04/2021 16:08

I think this board is such a mix of people! I really love how helpful and kind the majority of posters are.

Personally, I wear red lipstick every day (never call it lippie though!) but none of the others. The Stitchfix thing I think might have come about because of lockdown and people not getting to shops, but I am a bit suspicious of the huge number of threads about it.

ShirleyPhallus · 14/04/2021 16:15

4/5 things listed there remind me of a mid-2000s Trinny and Susannah vibe

Leggings can stay cos they’re so comfy

I agree there’s a real mix. What I assume to be classic MN style which is Cos shapeless dresses and Breton tops and then everyone else.

Only need to look at the trainer threads to see how many people say that certain trainers are completely outdated but no one can really offer a stylish modern solution.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2021 16:21

I have never seen the phrase, "A slick of bright lippie" on here.

I'm very suspicious of sneaky advertising from the likes of Hush, the place that does all the toddler-esque bright dungarees and Stitchfix.

Leggings are for indoors only.

Bright jewelery is absolutely not for me.

Getting colours done is not for me. I like black, grey and pink so that's what most of my clothes are.

I don't give a toss what you wear, as long as you're not showing me your bum/thong.

The words 'frumpy' and 'mumsy' make me scream.

The ageism on here often annoys me.

I don't own anything from Charlotte Tilbury. It all looks a bit shiny.

TeaAddict235 · 14/04/2021 16:44

I'm fed up with the countless threads where someone sings the praises of Lucy and Shat. Now if you want to look like Mr tumble's daughter, slap on one of their dungarees. Couldn't imagine walking through Lewisham or Catford during school term with one of those things on and not expect to be called a loser.

KirstenBlest · 14/04/2021 16:59

I love my romper-style dungarees.

I don't love what I consider MN-style - the breton top, jeans and converse/supergas with Joules anorak, and the obligatory lob.

Bluesheep8 · 14/04/2021 16:59

I have never seen the phrase, "A slick of bright lippie" on here.

I haven't. But I have seen things that are in pairs referred to as singular

A red lip
A nude shoe
A natural nail....

FedNlanders · 14/04/2021 17:13

@KirstenBlest

I love my romper-style dungarees.

I don't love what I consider MN-style - the breton top, jeans and converse/supergas with Joules anorak, and the obligatory lob.

You've just described me.
KirstenBlest · 14/04/2021 17:13

a wide-leg trouser
a smoky eye

KirstenBlest · 14/04/2021 17:14

I think I probably look more like Mr Tumble's mum

LolaSmiles · 14/04/2021 17:15

I thought the mumsnet style was boden, joules and ankle boots or crisp white shirts and aspiring to look French/ expensive.

Grin

Joking aside, there does seem to be a good range of styles.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 14/04/2021 17:17

Think it's pretty diverse. There may be some simple things people advise if someone is feeling a bit down.

Reinventinganna · 14/04/2021 17:19

I’ve never seen leggings described as a ‘must have’.

It used to all be boden and joules. I think it’s more varied now.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 14/04/2021 17:23

I just figured those threads are advertising plants..? The dungarees ones especially.
Here's some diversity - I'm an actual goth. All my clothes are black, my makeup is stark (when I wear it) and I have no interest in what's fashionable. I do like comfy shoes and a good waterproof jacket though!

LeeMiller · 14/04/2021 17:29

There is a pretty diverse range of tastes, styles and advice here, in my opinion. The only thing I recognise from your list as cropping up a lot is getting your colours done, I don't know anyone who's done this in real life.

SummaLuvin · 14/04/2021 17:38

Mumsnet style board is diverse, didn't mean to suggest otherwise. What I meant was I find the amount that these things come up seem way out of proportion with the amount I actually see them in real life. Might be geographical/demographical but I pretty much never see people in bright lipstick, or leggings, or have ever heard of someone getting a stitch fix box, however, they are all on here pretty frequently. In comparison, in real life I do see plenty of striped tops, wide legged trousers, and Hobbs/Joules looks.

OP posts:
ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 17:38

I like comfy shoes and a waterproof jacket too.

Floisme · 14/04/2021 18:05

I think it's more that we use S&B to chew the cud about all the things we daren't talk about too much with our friends and loved ones because they're not bothered about clothes and we'd bore them senseless. Hence the obsession with finding the perfect lipstick / trainers / leggings and with what season we are (although I don't understand that business at all).

5128gap · 14/04/2021 18:11

I think there is a bit of a culture tbh and its different from my experience in RL.
I often think the clothes talked about and suggested are very expensive, as are the make up and skincare recommendations.
I have never bought a single thing from any of the most frequently referenced shops, Boden, Joules, Hobbs.
I had never heard of Mint Velvet before.
When people post pictures of dresses for opinions I often think they are horrible. Big flowery voluminous things that I've not seen anyone wearing in RL, or occasion dresses that look very conservative to me.
I don't usually like the boots and sandals people post.
From this I have learned that I am dated and not at all stylish Sad But truly if I dressed in accordance with the MN culture in my area I'd stand out like a sore thumb.
I do enjoy reading about what other people are wearing though.
