WWW's six week 10 year younger boot camp, Nov 07, WEEK THREE, all welcome

WideWebWitch · 11/11/2007 17:59

This is week 3 of the ninth WWW 10year younger boot camp of 2007.

Anyone can join, we promise it works and you will feel and look better - and maybe younger - if you follow these rules.

This is about being healthy and feeling and looking better as a result. It's not a diet (although weight loss does seem to occur fairly frequently)

THE RULES ARE:

  • Sunscreen at all times, even though it's autumn
  • No or little booze in the week. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can. Many of us have an Omron pedometer
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream/foot cream too, we recommend Flexitol, which is fantastic stuff
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that at the end of six weeks we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

hello all, I've lost this thread for a while, but finally found you all again!

Have been doing pretty well though- bought handcream with SPF in it. Still applying the facecream and lipsalve with SPFs too.
Also bought some foot cream yesterday.

No booze in the week and in fact DH and I have given up all sweet things for the month of November. I think I might have to add a couple of weeks into December too though, as I keep forgetting.

Trying hard with the water...

Trying hard with the walking too...

Super-success with going to bed early: in bed by 10.30 all nights. Last night was in bed by 9.30!!!

WWW - I think batters means business! Regarding cleaners, if you can find a 'treasure' who'll put washing on and iron then good for you. I gave up looking and have used an agency for 2 years+. They are far more expensive but they don't spray furniture polish on the oil paintings, they're insured, they're dog & child-proof etc etc and so justify their rate.

I don't miss my commuting days at all and sympathise with you enormously. But you have a plan, which is good.

Will you have a break for Christmas/New Year? If not you'll probably find that they're not bad commuting days anyway because everyone else is at home.

And I second online shopping - I've had Ocado deliver at 9pm when things have been really hectic.

Bundle · 13/11/2007 16:38

hello all

have been VERY BAD.

but have been pretty good today and have cut back a lot on alcohol in evenings (only 1 glass cava last night with small chicken/cucumber sandwich),so there could be hope.

marina, sorry you've not been well (btw are squares still on? have been Very Lax about those too)

www, sorry to hear about your travails. my SIL used to commute 1.5hrs on train (and then cycle at each end) and it's no wonder she moved. MUCH sympathy and hope you can find way round the stress to carry on doing something you obviously love.

oh and bought some olay regenerist which is on special offer in boots atm
xxx

WideWebWitch · 13/11/2007 16:44

Thank you my lovelies!

Well, I slept this afternoon, collected both children from school and nursery via the farm shop and it all felt blissfully rural and calm and I briefly entertained a fantasy about being a sahm again. But I know I don't want that really.

But I got a call this afternoon and I have an interview! For a contract role that could go permanent and is local, 20 minutes drive, 30 maximum! So I am cautiously optimistic that I may not be commuting to London for long. It won't be quite as much money but I don't care quite frankly! It'll still be good money and I may make it home at a decent time, which is the main thing.

So yes, I do need to get a cleaner again. Dh usually cooks and deals with children so last night was unusual but still, it's all been a strain on all of us. Decent ready meals are a good idea I think. As is enough sleep, you're right Batters and I know I can't drink in the week - I haven't been, last night was the first time I cracked.

So I feel refreshed and calm and need a chat with dh tonight about our goals for the next six months. The biggest one has to me avoiding that commute, while still earning enough towards the deposit on a house.

You're all lovely, thanks for listening xxx

hurrah!x

foxinsocks · 13/11/2007 18:33

excellent news www! and I would definitely look into buses from Euston in the meantime. They should be pretty zippy at that time and your experimental drive the other day didn't sound too bad so I hope that becomes an option in the meantime.

I only got home from work at 8.30 last night (got called into a late meeting) and then had a HUGE row with dh and went to bed without resolving it.

Tried to make amends by leaving work before 5 (to lots of raised eyebrows but I reckon I deserved the early break as I got in early this morning too), got a bus to Waterloo, RAN across the whole concourse (naturally, train at the furthest platform away), sprinted onto the train only for it to judder to a halt as there had been a fatality at Twickenham aaarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh(now, you know, I am not short on sympathy for people with mental health problems but WHY OH WHY do they have to jump in front of trains in rush hour grrrr).

So I've only just walked in the door grrrrrr.

So I have enormous sympathies and hope your interview goes well. I am starting to dream of jobs I can walk to!

foxinsocks · 13/11/2007 18:38

and marina, I hope you feel better soon

unknownrebelbang · 13/11/2007 20:15

Evening all.

Good luck with the interview www. Sounds like today worked out well, all things considered.

Sunscreen - yes.
No Booze.
45 mins ex bike, rather than walking.
Lots of water/weak tea - not drunk much today.
Apply body cream - erm, no.
Use hand cream/foot cream - erm, no.
Go to bed early - hmm, slight relapse.
Eat healthily - ok, except for the other half packet of gingernuts. Oh, just remembered, also pinched my colleague's wispa bar...which he'd pinched off his partner
Be happy - just tired today.

WideWebWitch · 13/11/2007 20:57

Thank you. FIS, sorry your commute was rubbish too and hope you made it up with your dh.

Might as well post my terrible day boot camp wise (but all v necessary from a feeling as ok as pos pov)

toast x 2 Marmite
bacon sandwich
tuna with light mayo and rocket sandwich
wotsits
few mouthfuls of PE pizza I made for childrens supper
and a huge helping of cottage pie I made with dd this afternoon at 4.30 - she peeled all the carrots and mashed the potato, it was lovely. And when dh came in at 5.45 I thought, I'm usually stomping up the escalators at Euston at this time...
water
no booze
going to bed v shortly

Never mind! Onwards!

WWW that kind of commute sounds so much better. Sounds like you had a lovely day today - hope you have a smooth commute for the rest of the week.

Hello everyone....

JUst loooking in. Am having a disaster at the moment. Won't bore you with the details but both my father and my father in law are very ill and my DD1 is not sleeping at night AT ALL. Am shattered and as a result am eating rubbish and having a couple of glasses in teh evening as I will be up half the night. On the plus side, I am walking, sunscreening, creaming and being kind to myslf when I can.

Sorry to all those who have been ill [Marina and Duchess leap to mind] and all those whose job / travelling is hard {FIS and WWW, but there may be others]. Hello to everyone else, hope you are all looking and feeling GORGEOUS today!

More later once I have perked up. Was awake between 1.30 and 5 in the night so am a little jaded.....

bamamama · 14/11/2007 10:48

www - here's wishing you all the best for the interview. It sounds like you had a lovely day off.
Dolly - so sorry to hear you're having a crap time. Try and put your feet up when you can [easier said than done emoticon]. Is there anyone who can have dc while you get some rest?
Bundle - how on earth do you stick with one glass of cava? I'm with batters on the inability to leave it at one (I presume that's what you meant batters?). However I'm feeling a little smug because I managed to resist the wednesday-oh-come-on-I've-been-good-since-Sunday bottle of wine this evening so should be on track for no booze on five whole consecutive evenings.
batters - does this mean your postings are also going to start '100g of granola'?

puddle · 14/11/2007 11:16

I am also in awe of Bundle's abiliy to stop at one. DP and I have a complusion to finish the bottle if it's open. Am hoping that giving it up for November will reset my habits and I won't reach for wine in the week (happy to partake at the weekends).

One thing that I think is really making a difference to me is going to bed early. I have been in bed and asleep by 10.30 for the last two weeks and definitely feel better for it.

I have just got that Dove pro-age body moisturiser - has anyone tried it? It's vile - really sticky on your skin - goodness knows what's in it. Will use it up (tightwad emoticon) won't buy it again.

Great news on the interview www - fantastic timing. Hope it goes well. You seem to get a lot of interviews - what line of work are you in?

Sorry to hear about your father and FIL Dolly - hope things start t improve soon.

Bundle · 14/11/2007 11:19

errrrmmm shall we say I "slid" a bit on the - ahem - one glass last night

puddle · 14/11/2007 11:19

lol, well done for confessing my child.

prufrock · 14/11/2007 11:20

Well aprt from the sleeping (I just can't fall asleep without dh being in bed with me) I'm doing OK. I did have alcohol on Monday night, but it was 2 hot toddys with lemon, honey and a minature of whisky, so I'm not counting it as a transgression from weekday abstinence as it was purely medicinal (why do snotty colds last so long) I've also been eating too many cakes - have got into the habit of joinging the kids in teh afterschool snack - must break that soon, or go back to nuts/fruit

And I've been exercising as well.

moonshine · 14/11/2007 11:28

Glad things look a little rosier WWW (unfortunately that blimmin' 'Things Can Only Get Better' song keeps entering my head when I read your posts).

I had my haircut yesterday and I think I like it (it always takes me a week or so to make my mind up) but it is a vast improvement on the mop that was habiting my head before. And my hair is shimmery shining - if only it would last.

Day 3 of tough bootcamp today (omg is that all) but I am eating a lot less, moving more, drinking more water (althoug too much diet coke but needs must sometimes) and was in bed before 11pm last night - unheard of for me. And haven't even felt like having alcohol, despite dd having the mother of all tantrums this week (taste of things to come I fear). I don't really do one glass either so have to go cold turkey.

It's my day off and have seen Fern Brittain for the first time in a long time - she looks fantastic. Fern, are you a covert member of bootcamp?

What has happened to Arfishy - have you been pummelled into submission?

prufrock · 14/11/2007 11:30

bundle - lol - I knew you wouldn't keep it up. Opened wine means drunk wine in this house.

marina, sorry you're still geeling ill, it's so much harder ro be good when under the weather isn't it, even though logicaly we know that Vitamin C, early night and no alcohol will make us better, we stll go for comfort eating and drinking and crappy TV watching - or is that just me?

prufrock · 14/11/2007 11:30

www - the only way my dh deals with his day (leaves house at 6:30, gets back at 6:45, and a relatively easy commute on one train for 1h45 and short walks) is because I'm at home looking after him. So when he gets in the only thing he has to do is get the kids out of the bath and into bed with stories (and he only does that because he enjoys it) and then sit down and eat the meal I've prepared. So don't feel your a wimp for not being able to cope - the tube bit in particular is horribly stressful.

Rubberduck posted soem meditative podcasts for me recently - could you use something liek that to tune out the horrid surroundings? And be disciplined about using the train bit of the journey to do as much stuff as possible so that you can relax at home? Because whilst a glass of wine and a book might be nice, if you've got all the other crap that you have to do at home at the back of your mind, you won't be able to properly relax.

moonshine · 14/11/2007 11:33

I have tried the Dove pro-age stuff and currently have the neck and chest one. It makes absolutely no difference to the firmness or lines (but my sensible voice told me it wouldn't) but it is a much nicer texture than the moisturiser and it has made my decolletage very soft (for an old bird).

Dingle · 14/11/2007 13:28

Not been around much this week- life is overtaking me again at the moment. The building work has almost finished and our house is starting to feel like our home again, despite it still being very dusty and unorganised!

Went out to our dinner and dance and got completely drunk!! LOLO...you can tell we don't get out very often!! But a fun time was had...from what I remember!

As for the rest of the week;

SPF every day
Booze after the weekend's eldulgences, I am cutting out completely this week!
Walking _ still only doing the school runs and not much else. Probably only about 6000-7000 a day!!
Water, still nowhere near 2ltrs, but trying! Bbody cream - still only a couple of times a week
Hand cream - nearly every day, sometimes a couple of times a day if I am good!
Early to bed- not consistent but much better- staying up to watch "I'm a celebrity"
Eat healthily- bit better, I am now finding time to have a breakfast, even if it is only a yoghurt and a oaty cereal bar!!
Be happy- feeling much less stressed now extension is alnmost done, more comfortable at work but still need to find time for ME!

Thank you for the inspiration!!

Marina · 14/11/2007 14:20

Marina sidles back in feeling better
I was honestly not a well woman though and it has renewed my resolve to get fit and slim because of the potential health risks of middle age and obesity
Today I have eaten fruit (mango, luscious English cox's apple, banana) and sushi, and am forswearing coffee for a while in favour of some dire-sounding but OK vanilla redbush tea.
Am consistently doing all right on the water front and the handcream (not an optional extra in my case, it takes 24 hours to get to Tutankhamun status if I don't ladle on the Clarins)
Will now be doing more exercise too. I had a vile sort of gastric bug and that is all I am going to say. Dh kept following me around intoning lines from that annoying Danone Activia ad big help that was.
Anyway, scrolling down here I see that www has the potential to get out of that commute, hurrah. Honestly www, don't e-glare at me, but I have been so concerned about the effect of that journey on your wellbeing - you get stuff like tonsillitis after all. I am so relieved to hear that you may have an out which will help you rebalance your life. I find my one-hour, fairly simple daily commute a constant source of stress and angst to be honest, and stories like FIS' and prufrock's just confirm that if one of you is not on the home front to compensate, commuting can cause major domestic discord.
Am of dingle on the lam, glad your building works are nearly done, I need some underpinning too but already have my own flying buttresses thanks
Moonshine has reminded me my hair desperately needs cutting, it's looking somewhat silly now
Dolly, I'm so sorry about your dad and FIL, my mum has just been given a best-case post heart-attack scenario that we have waited weeks for and I could physically feel the stress lifting from my shoulders and neck as we got the news from the hospital. I hadn't realised what a cloud we'd been under all that time. Combining it all with looking after your own young family is exhausting, isn't it
We tend not to open bottles in the week either, for the same reasons as batters and puddle - I do not have bundy's iron resolve (bundy check your work e-mail there's a dear )
Glad all is well with you duchess and welcome back hollie! And hope that sticky cold is better soon prufrock, the one that is stalking London is revolting. Ds looked as though he'd been bog-snorkelling last week, ugh
I'll soon be matching bama step for step although I bet her walk is a sight more picturesque than mine
