Told lots of hair but very fine. Help me grow it

Hi all

I need a bit of help as don't know where to start

I have very fine, dead straight hair. I get told by every hairdresser I have lots but it's very thin.

I am desperately trying to grow it so I can wear it loosely curled to give some volume as it hangs straight, centre parting and just looks so plain.

It doesn't grow. It breaks even with lockdown meaning I no longer using heat on it much now.

I'm looking for a really good volumising shampoo and conditioner and maybe one off treatments I can do at home to improve the condition and help it grow.

Obviously lockdown hasn't helped as I can't have it trimmed regularly.

Any suggestions??

Thank you Smile

Anyone? Maybe I'll just have to remain having rubbish hair Grin

Grin OP, I have a very similar thread....

EasterBunny21 · 12/04/2021 16:02

Sorry can’t help but I always wonder what this means.

I thought thick hair meant you had lots therefore if you grabbed it into a ponytail it would be a chunky one.

Your hairdresser is telling you you have lots of hair but it’s fine. What does this actually mean? Are we talking about the actual girth of a strand?

Sorry OP but I’ve pondered this previously and your post has brought it into my head again.

Northernsoullover · 12/04/2021 16:03

I have rubbish hair. Poker straight, fine. I tried growing it but it knots. When it was longer if I wore a scarf or coat it used to get into a terrible tangle. I now clip it up in a bulldog grip. All the time Sad. I have accepted I cannot grow it.

Eyevorbig0ne · 12/04/2021 16:05

Consider extensions to add volume and length? Loads of people use them.

Oblomov21 · 12/04/2021 16:06

Understand. I have shit hair. Tried taking a few pills and supplements, did bugger all.

ZombeaArthur · 12/04/2021 16:12

I have thin, fine hair which I’m attempting to grow. I’ve been using Bondi Boost shampoo and conditioner for a few months and, although I may be just kidding myself, I really do think it’s made a difference to my hair. I’ve also been using John Frieda 7 day volume and my hair looks significantly thicker than ever before.

I’ve asked my hairdresser before about extensions and she didn’t think I’d have enough hair to support them and after really considering it, she’s right. My next big idea is a perm to add volume but my hair just isn’t long enough yet.

BaggoMcoys · 12/04/2021 16:21

@EasterBunny21 it means the individual hairs are thin/fine, but there are a lot of them. I have the same type of hair. My hair looks thick because there's so much of it, but as each strand is so thin, the ends split really, really easily. This is the case no matter how well I take care of it - silk pillowcase, only washing once a week, no heat, lots of deep conditioning, etc.. I don't bother with a lot of this anymore as I've realised it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

Op the only thing I've found that keeps my hair in decent condition, are very regular trims - which I do myself usually. I've not found any product or method to stop the constant breaking.

adrianmolesmole · 12/04/2021 16:40

Your hairdresser is telling you you have lots of hair but it’s fine. What does this actually mean? Are we talking about the actual girth of a strand

The 'lots of hair' refers to the number of hairs you have on your head (density) and the 'fine' refers to how thin/thick your individual strands are (diameter). Density can be thin, medium or thick, and diameter is usually described as fine, medium or coarse. Your hair will be a combination of eg, fine & thick, or thin and coarse etc.

Mine is fine, thin-to-medium in thickness. Lots of trims are essential for fine hair, unfortunately, it's the worst IMO!

rubbishhair · 12/04/2021 16:41

Thank you for all the replies, they're really helpful with a few things to look into.

Think I might be kidding myself that there's some miracle fix out there I just haven't found yet then.

I did also think about growing long enough to perm to give some permanent volume but have nowhere near enough hair yet to pull that off I don't think

Olaplex.
I thought my hair didn't grow.
It does, its just the ends snap off where it's so fine.
I wish I discovered it years ago.

Zarinea · 12/04/2021 16:53

This is me but I also have crazy waves to contend with, which can be lovely but makes me look like one of the Macbeth witches as soon as there's a drop of rain.

User does Olaplex make a difference even if your hair isn't coloured?

CheerfulBunny · 12/04/2021 16:55

I've been told exactly the same thing by hairdressers, OP. If I curl my hair with straighteners it looks great but if I leave it poker straight and natural it lies flat and looks really lank. It makes a really skinny ponytail. As much as I love the straightener waves it totally knackers the condition really quickly and it breaks off as others have mentioned. The extreme straightness of my hair makes it reluctant to hold a curl so other things don't work so well. I'm using the biotin thickening OGX shampoo and conditioner which I think has helped a bit but otherwise just accept I have bad hair days and ration the straighteners. Would be interested to see if anyone else has any wisdom to share.

CombatBarbie · 12/04/2021 17:01

I have been told this for years and get it, my daughter is the same but both our hair grows, she's currently just above bum line but having the fine but lots of it hair means it matts easier than her eldest sister who has normal to thick hair.

rubbishhair · 12/04/2021 17:03

Olaplex. I thought my hair didn't grow. It does, its just the ends snap off where it's so fine. I wish I discovered it years ago.
This sounds like me. I know it must grow as I have roots but it never seems to get any longer so I presume it is just snapping at the ends. I've noticed I have some bits at the back which are shorter too so must have snapped.

I've heard good things about impales so maybe I should at least give it a try.

How long do people suggest to trial for to see if it helps / expect to see a difference?

OP posts:
User5747384 · 12/04/2021 17:12

@Zarinea I get highlights about 3 times a year, but I haven't always and it's always snapped off.
My hair is just very weak and fine.
My hairdresser also uses Olaplex when she does my highlights.
It's made a real difference to my hair.
Even in regards to keeping the ends in good shape after a hair cut.
For example I last had my hair cut in December.
Usually my hair would look crappy on the ends after about a month and look all straggly fairly quickly, but it still looks in good shape now when I haven't had a hair cut for months.
I use 3, 4 and 5.
My hair naturally looks feathered around the front where it snaps off all of the feathered looking bits have almost grown out.
This never used to happen for me.
I wish I found it years ago.

User5747384 · 12/04/2021 17:19

Op for me I have been using it for 4 months I still have some left in all three bottles.
I probably should use the treatment more to be honest. You will run out of that quicker and the conditioner.
The shampoo you only need a tiny amount that lathers up in your hands so lasts ages.
I still have plenty left.
Definitely worth a try until your bottles run out say?
I suppose it depends how much hair you have though too.

Random63638 · 12/04/2021 17:24

I have the same hair type except for the breaking, mine seems fairly strong. I have poker straight hair except for the old curly nightmare that wraps around everything and causes massive knots if I don't brush carefully. Anyway, I digress. Aveda Pure Abundance shampoo and conditioner has done wonders. With the volumising pump action brush in light styling mousse (so?) that's called something like pholliant, I can look it up or I lose this thread sorry! This brush through stuff has been a revelation and I've gone from every day washing to once every three/four days which I think helps condition too. Top tip, wait for a sale cause is dammed expensive but so worth it.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 12/04/2021 17:32

My hair is exactly the same (one hairdresser described it as ‘babies hair’!). Lots of it but very fine indeed. I accepted for years I would be unable grow it. However, about three years back I started taking hyaluronic acid supplements for my joints as I had started strength training. Not sure if they helped with that, but I noticed after six months or so it had made my hair much stronger and thicker! The difference is really noticeable in photos (which I show to disbelieving friends). And guess what - thanks also to lockdown so I haven’t been to the hairdressers- I now have hair below my bra strap at the back! I had always dreamed of long hair, but now I have it it’s actually a bit annoying - hate the feel of it down my neck. May go back to short Grin.

Camdenish · 12/04/2021 17:32

www.windlelondon.com/shop/fortifying-treatment-shampoo/ And the matching conditioner have really made a difference to my hair.

I was skeptical when I bought it but it really has improved my hair. It’s not cheap but lasts a long time. I have very few must have products but this is one of them.

Twilightstarbright · 12/04/2021 17:35

I have similar hair.

I've been using a moisturising shampoo as it was getting frizzy and greasy as a reaction to harsh products. A hair treatment once a week. I try not to use tongs or straighteners too much, in fact I let it air dry until 90% dry then use the Dyson airwrap to style the front.

I have it cut one length rather than layers.

rubbishhair · 12/04/2021 19:45

Thanks all.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this annoying hair Grin

It sounds more as if you have hair breakage as an issue. I have the same hair- fine but lots of it- but it does grow.

It's maybe your diet that needs looking at if your hair is brittle and breaking. Have you tried deep conditioners or leave in conditions, not brushing it when wet ( use a detangle brush) etc etc?

smartipants · 12/04/2021 21:20

I have fine hair that grows at the root but breaks off at the ends, especially around the front and sides, so I never seem to gain much length. I've tried all sorts! I have had some success with Joico K Pak range, olaplex, but the biggest game changer for me has been Aveda damage remedy restructuring treatment and daily hair repair. I've been using them since January and have actually seen some proper growth to my sides. Not cheap but, for me, deffo worth it !

goose1964 · 12/04/2021 21:23

Probably not much help but my hair was like it until my pregnancies, I now have very thick waves which are down to my elbows. It's a bit dramatic and doesn't work for everyone 😃
