In the past I've bought most of mine from M&S or Next as I could always find items, easy returns and to be honest near the bus stop! I find less and less I see clothes I like in these stores and looking for inspiration.

OP posts:

Charity shops

Egghead68 · 09/04/2021 20:35

Stuff I get from charity shoes is mainly Cos, Hush, Sweaty Betty, Phase Eight, M&S and independents.

Moonface123 · 09/04/2021 21:00

F&F
Amazon
Apricot

MissBarbary · 09/04/2021 21:03

I'm 61.

I buy a lot from Palava, &Daughter, Edina Ronay, Pauw (based in the Netherlands- I used to go to Amsterdam every 18 months or so but they now do online) and Lillith (a slightly bonkers French designer whose clothes don't date as they are not in fashion) and Samantha Sung. I also buy from a local independent boutique. Recent knitwear has been from Eribé.

Shoes are mainly from Pretty Ballerina

I don't buy from the high street except occasionally from Cos.

Baukjen
Karen Millen
Great Plains
Monsoon
Next (does lots of brands and easy to return)
Ted Baker
River island
White stuff

Used to buy from Debenhams and Oasis occasionally. Bought once or twice from Mint Velvet, Phase Eight and M&S.

Never bought from Zara, Whistles, Hobbs, Jigsaw, Reiss, Cos or Hush.

I do love fashion and clothes so I shop online a lot, hunting for ideas and then waiting for promotions.

ParvaAvis · 09/04/2021 21:52

I’m aged 52. I like ‘lagenlook’ and boho styles. I rarely impulse buy,: everything is considered and has to go with lots of things already in my wardrobe (I have lists!). I don’t have endless funds for clothes and I tend to buy a few good quality new items, and quite a lot is secondhand.

Sahara - my favourite shop! Expensive, but their sales are good. Great bubble trousers, unusual dresses and fabulous coats and jackets.

East - (online only, no stores these days).

Etsy - for kimonos, interesting coats and jackets etc. I buy a lot from here.

Monsoon - I love their embroidered tops for the summer but not a lot else tbh.

Next: for jeans and trousers only - they always fit me really well.

Clarks and M&S for shoes: the only affordable shops that sell shoe size 4.5.

EBay: I am always searching for the above brands, especially shoes.

Seasalt: I only buy the occasional item from here. Their clothes have got too much of a ‘schoolteacher’ vibe for me to buy much there 😆.

Local independent boutiques: I can’t wait for them to reopen!

Happy hunting OP! Find your personal style and stick to it. Don’t be swayed by whatever everybody else is wearing or dull ‘capsule wardrobe’ ideology. Clothes are meant to be fun and an expression of who you are...

Hillaria · 09/04/2021 21:57

I'm nearly 50.

Boden - especially skirts.
Jigsaw (carefully chosen bits - the fabrics can be a bit flimsy)
M&S cashmere jumpers
Hobbs, very occasionally.
Ebay (I've had a fair bit of M&S cashmere from there, plus Boden silk shirts, which I love, but which are expensive otherwise).
Local country clothes place for shooting coats etc
Abraham Moon
House of Bruar
Charity shops

Hillaria · 09/04/2021 22:00

Oh, and M&S do some good shoes which are reasonably priced.
As do Dune (in the John Lewis sale) and Ecco.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2021 09:40

I won't buy M&S cashmere anymore. The last two jumpers I bought were appalling. Bobbled within days and shrank a lot when washed per instructions.

beguilingeyes · 10/04/2021 10:46

I like Camper for shoes... although their designs have gone a bit nuts in recent years. Fit Flop trainers for comfort. TK Maxx is great for shoes of all brands.

Shorthairlady · 10/04/2021 11:07

Am 47. I buy quite a bit from Etsy. There are some amazing Bulgarian designers on there that do amazing pieces. I always get complimented on everything I buy from there. Quite edgy items.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 10/04/2021 21:45

More Jigsaw than any other brand.
Massimo Tutti
Uniqlo
Cos
Finesterre for jumpers and outdoor stuff
Land's End - good for T shirts and swimwear
A bit from Toast, Me & Em. Mango, Warehouse and Baukjen
Work stuff - Winser and Cefinn. Cefinn dresses are expensive but you can machine-wash them and they barely need ironing, so get loads of wear out of them. I refuse to buy dresses that are dry-clean only.

Used to buy a lot from Whistles, but the quality has plummeted. Small amounts from Zara and Hush, but not much as quality also really poor.

I'm no fashionista but I draw the line at Seasalt and Joules - horrendously frumpy.

HelenHywater · 10/04/2021 22:11

I mostly buy (in normal times) from a local boutique that stocks scandi/french designers.

It stocks Sessun, Ganni, Samsoe & Samsoe, American Vintage, APC Margaret Howell etc.

Have some work dresses from Cefinn. Also Me & Em.

Plus French shops - Maje, Sandro, Zadig & Voltaire and Comptoirs. And BA&SH.

Jeans from a variety of places depending on what looks nice.

More affordable shops - Cos, &Otherstories and Arket.

Some things from Net a Porter and the Outnet depending if I spot anything I like. recently a pair of Jeans from Net a porter. A shirt from the Outnet.

In lockdown I've had bit of a sweaty betty habit.

I used to shop at Whistles but don't like it anymore.(although the jeans are ok from there)

I like & Daughter but it's very expensive!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2021 22:34

I have a friend who wears dresses from Seasalt and Fatface almost exclusively. She always looks lovely and they really suit her.

colouringindoors · 10/04/2021 22:38

Boden Hampshire/Richmond trousers. Used to buy more but only the trousers seem to be good quality these days

Hobbs and Jigsaw (mainly from eBay)

Basics like T shirts and polo neck jumpers, M&S

Seasalt and Joules for stripy tops.

Zara for coats

Joules for bags

Londonmummy66 · 10/04/2021 22:58

Ebay, Uniqlo and charity shops

At the moment there are a lot of bridal shops that are sadly selling off mother of the bride type clothing on ebay. Most is grim but there is also some seriously nice silk stuff at a fraction of the usual price.

Hillaria · 10/04/2021 23:05

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Actually, I agree about shrinkage. I am a size 8, but tend to buy 12 or 14, because I know that they will shrink a bit. In fact, I have bought some size 20s, because I quite like them to be oversized, especially when I'm doing sod all at home.

I was thinking about all of this earlier. I mostly hawk around on Ebay, hoping to find the stuff I'd like to buy in the shops if I could afford it. However, my general approach is: only natural fibres. I only buy cotton, silk, cashmere, lambswool and linen. I don't wear trousers at all, but Boden via eBay is good for wool skirts. I dress pretty plainly - mostly neutrals and navy - but in decent fabrics (100% cashmere coats, etc - again, ebay or my local shop, when they have a sale). All my linen coats have come from Really Wild, via eBay.

It’s very annoying when cashmere shrinks. Have you tries soaking it in Woolite with keratin . It has improved a few of my shrunken jumpers
notacooldad · 10/04/2021 23:19

Joanie
Lady v
Miss Bamboo
Next
Silk Thread
& other stories

For work I just tend to wear jeans, Nike Air and a sweatshirt or t shirt and a Belstaff Jacket
Or if I'm on an activity day Rab or Alp kit quilted jacket, scarpa trail shoes and a t shirt and usually Craghopper walking trousers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2021 10:06

're the M&S cashmere -
I'm a 14 but the last ones I bought were size 20 because the sizing was so weird. They shrank so much - I ended up giving them to size 10 dd. I won't buy from there again.

JaceLancs · 11/04/2021 11:12

Mainly tkmaxx or charity shops or eBay
I like high end but can’t afford the prices
I also love outlet stores especially for bags and shoes
Thanks to trips to Bicester village I now have my Valentino rock studs, some manolo blahnik flats and same from Jimmy choo

kissmelittleass · 11/04/2021 11:21

River island for jeans because they keep their shape and don't go baggy
Marks and Spencer's for underwear
For the rest of my clothes I buy a lot from Next, H&M, few bits from misguided, boohoo, odd item from Dorothy Perkins, super dry
I think a lot of women over a certain age think they can't shop in certain shops because they are for younger women but you can you because a lot of items are for all ages so who said you can't??!!
Wear what you want that makes you feel good about YOU!!!!!

kissmelittleass · 11/04/2021 11:23

Ooh and a great little shop I found last year on Instagram called 'Mewinchmore hill' have bought a good few items from them love the style.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/04/2021 11:25

I'm 56 and small. I don't wear black or grey, high necks, oversized or shapeless things, floral prints, frills, polyester, wool, cashmere, angora or alpaca.

I buy things anywhere I can find them!
