50+ Where do you buy clothes?

In the past I've bought most of mine from M&S or Next as I could always find items, easy returns and to be honest near the bus stop! I find less and less I see clothes I like in these stores and looking for inspiration.

OP posts:
expectopelargonium · 09/04/2021 14:23

Asda.

onlyconnect · 09/04/2021 14:51

I've just watched Jess for the first time and also can't see how to buy the clothes. Some of them come up on screen but others don't. Nothing underneath apart from comments. Any ideas please?

mommybunny · 09/04/2021 15:04

If you’re watching the video on an iPhone, with the phone in portrait mode there is a tiny arrow pointing down to the right of the video title. Click on that and it will open the description box where you will see the links to the outfits.

I tried including a screenshot but it wouldn’t take...

Nearlyadoctor · 09/04/2021 15:10

I’m 49 - 50 in the summer:

Holland and Cooper
Celtic and Co
White Company
Crew Clothing
Beaumont and Bear
M&S
Fat face
Hush
Occasionally Joukes and Boden

EternalOptimist7 · 09/04/2021 15:15

I haven’t heard of some of these places! I’m 55 & buy from:-
George at Asda
Bon Prix
Tu at Sainsbury’s
Tesco’s
Primark ( mainly for tops - love their basic black long sleeved v necks)
T K Maxx

onlyconnect · 09/04/2021 15:40

mommybunny thank you. Got it!

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/04/2021 16:31

I'm 51.

I try to buy from sample sales as much as possible (I live in East London so lots of sales near me) or during sales or from The Outnet / Yoox.

Sportswear from Nike, Koral, Varley and Stella for Adidas

Everything else from:
Joseph
Christopher Kane
Christopher Raeburn
Nanushka
& Daughter
Arket
& Other Stories
Palones
Rejina Pyo
Mother of Pearl
Asos
Pleats Please
The Kooples

Shoes mainly from Tracey Neuls, Neous & Paul Smith

TheBullfinch · 09/04/2021 17:02

Massimo Dutti
Arket
AndOtherStories
WeekDay
Navy Grey
Benneton
Reiss
Jigsaw
Monsoon
Whistles
J Crew

Plus various smaller boutique shops/sites.

For me, it's a style I'm looking for, not necessarily fashion pieces, I can do that with shies and accessories.

For me now, things must be in natural fibres, plain, stripe or botanical prints at a push. Neutral colours (sand, ivory, navy, grey, black) plus a touch of blue teal and green for colour and NO f'ing cold shoulders, frills, flounces, lace, florals. I dont want to dress in a nighty!

Warehouse used to be brilliant but the quality has gone now sadly.

goose1964 · 09/04/2021 18:12

I'm more comfortable in boho styles. I often just buy stuff when I need it. The best quality I've had are from Patra silk, and grass-field.I don't have money to buy from a lot of the companies mentioned.

BlueChampagne · 09/04/2021 18:17

Charity shops or Joe Browns

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2021 18:17

The last few items I've bought have been:
black jumper - Boden
black top - Boden
camo print trousers - M&S
white top - M&S
denim shirt - M&S
boots - Seasalt

Other things I have and wear a lot are:
leather jackets - All Saints
black t-shirts - Jigsaw (wear these at least twice a week)
pencil skirts - Jigsaw and Boden
M&S Autograph skinny jeans
Levi's jeans
Fatface dungarees and maxi dress
Boden jersey dresses

I'm finding it harder and harder to find things that I like and am willing to pay for tbh.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2021 18:19

Oh and I pretty much live in Stan Smiths or Paul Smith trainers, or Seasalt and Clarks ankle boots.

ILoveShula · 09/04/2021 18:42

Charity shops and ebay.

If locally, I look in Hobbs, Jigsaw, Uniqlo, M&S, Zara for a rummage, Gap (jeans), New Look, Seasalt because my mum might like something from there. If I go on the train to a town with the shops Comptoir de Cotonnier, agnes b, Isabel Marant, Arket, Muji, Cos, Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters, and sometimes get dragged by big sis into Anthropologie.

On line - tend to look at Toast, Plumo type online shops.

I am a keen charity shopper and manage to get all sorts of things cheaply including most of the brands I've mentioned and some 'designer' brands.

RunnerDown · 09/04/2021 18:57

Baukjen
Jigsaw
Hush
Whistles
White Company
Massimo Dutti
Poetry
Anthropologie
I look at fat face and Boden but when I’ve bought things I’ve never been all that happy with them. Used to love Mint velvet but not so much recently

ILoveShula · 09/04/2021 19:08

Nomad and Mistral are a bit Seasalt-like. Sahara is quite nice.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 09/04/2021 19:10

@Nanasueathome

Toast Seasalt
Me too!
AnyFucker · 09/04/2021 19:14

I am 55

Haven’t bought much during COVID times but I mainly use H+M, Fat Face,Top Shop, New Look and a local boutique

ILoveShula · 09/04/2021 19:21

I go into Primark fairly regularly too, leggings, tights and t-shirts are good. Tu is decent quality and can be a bit Joules-y.

CaptainPovey · 09/04/2021 19:25

I am 55, River Island, New Look, Next, Joe Brown's, Ebay; anywhere I like the look of the clothing
Primark for t-shirts and socks
Stan Smith or Gazelle's

SelkieBeag · 09/04/2021 19:26

Anybody who buys clothes from joe brown's 😳 i'm sorry for your troubles

MissyB1 · 09/04/2021 19:32

52 here, I buy from
M&S
Crew Clothing
Fat face
Monsoon
John Lewis
Sainsbury’s

Floisme · 09/04/2021 19:37

Nearer to 70 than 50. In normal times (can we stay call pre-pandemic normal?) I buy mostly second hand but only in real shops. My favourites are a dress agency and a market stall - I'm crossing my fingers they both reopen next week. I look out in particular for Margaret Howell, Joseph, John Smedley and Vivienne Westwood, and for vintage 50s/60s coats and jackets although they're hard to find now, also for silk shirts from any era.

If I'm buying new I mainly switch between Uniqlo (particularly their collaborations) Cos and Toast, depending how how I'm fixed for cash. I keep an eye on Me and Em, Baukjen, Celtic and Co, Arket and Plumo but rarely buy.

I do feel as if my field is shrinking and, up to about 5 years ago, I'd have reeled off a much longer list. If I lived near a decent branch of H&M and Zara I'd probably still be picking out the odd gems there, and yes in M&S too, but I can't be bothered trawling through their websites. If I'm honest, the same applies to a lot of the brands I see recommended on here. I find online shopping frustrating, inefficient, and dislike it more with every passing day.

AuntieMarys · 09/04/2021 19:42

I'm 61 and 6 feet tall. Bloody nightmare.

Arrivederla · 09/04/2021 20:12

White Stuff (less and less though)
Boden
Tu
Baukjen
Cos

For a good range of tops try Kettlewell Colours (small and British owned).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2021 20:30

A lot of their stuff is truly revolting, but I got a couple of nice cotton sundresses there last year.
