Does anyone know how people get this wavy choppy look?

I see it everywhere these days (online anyway).

It looks lovely but I have no idea how to achieve it. Is it a specific cut at the hairdressers (if so - does it have a name?)

And do you realistically need to use curlers for this look?

My hair is straight and quite heavy and I'm not sure it would cope with curlers every day not sure I could be arsed.

It is heavily styled to look undone

TwoBreakingIntoOne · 08/04/2021 15:11

I think that's been done with straighteners, skill and time

tinylittleyou · 08/04/2021 15:12

My hairdresser did similar using hair straighteners, there’s probably some tutorials on YouTube? I’d just search for wavy or beachy waves

Brainfogisreal · 08/04/2021 15:12

I have that look when I can be bothered blow drying, straightening then using tongs as that is what it takes. I have naturally wavy but frizzy hair. I guess tongs alone would work if you have smooth straight hair. Oh and layers.

TwoBreakingIntoOne · 08/04/2021 15:13

If you look at the top it's been dried to create lift
A wave has been created but the ends properly straightened
Nothing natural there Grin

Tweetypietwo · 08/04/2021 15:13

I have this haircut (well similar.. been a while since it has been cut) it's sort of an asymmetrical choppy lob but I have one side at the font a little longer than the other. I didn't ask for it specifically, I just wanted to keep my hair longer at the front and shorter at the back. I just use strightners to add a wave or curl, depending on how it is cut you should just be able to use a texturing or sea salt spray. But to get the curls like the pics you have attached, you'll need some heat!

BarelyFunctioning · 08/04/2021 15:13

Thanks Kirsten. It's strange because I'm also considering starting to colour my hair, and ALL hairdressy photos seem to have this cut at the moment.

The cut it style or whatever it is makes colours look great - but what if I can't achieve that look with my hair and it's just dead straight? Frustrating.

I'm trying to achieve the at home. I have one-length hair which was shoulder length but is currently down my back.

I have a natural wave, so I use the John Frieda range of curly stuff, like the air-drying spray, or the curls mousse, and dry it first normally, then do the ends with a diffuser.

If your hair is straight then yeah, you'd have to tong it every day.

BarelyFunctioning · 08/04/2021 15:16

Ah okay - so definitely requires tongs and/or straighteners, so it's not just a cut.

Brainfog - yep, mine is frizzy but straight. A wonderful combo Smile

Asymmetrical choppy lob - that's a good description!

Yes looks like a lob with a slight gradient, I did have this cut but shorter.
I do this style sometimes and have to use straighteners, clamp a piece of hair and twist round but not all the way, pull down and stop before the ends, wide tooth comb through it when cooled down and I also Dry shampoo after to add some texture

BarelyFunctioning · 08/04/2021 15:29

Thanks @elsaesmeralda that's a good description. It does sound like a lot of work.

This is my hair - when I can be bothered... It's not difficult to achieve but requires a good blow dry and then using a straightener to add the waves. Sometimes it lasts well for a second or third day, often not. I'm the low maintenance type so some of the time I might bother to use hairdryer or straightener but rarely both.

Disabrie22 · 08/04/2021 15:30

I have a natural wave that can look like that when my hair dresser cuts it - right now it looks like a limp dishrag. If you have curly hair - clever layers and a curler.

Blimeyoreilleystrews · 08/04/2021 15:41

As a pp has said, you use straighteners to curl it but stop an inch or two before the ends, that’s how you get the choppy look at the ends. I have waist length hair and after practicing (quite a lot Grin) I can curl my full head in about 10 mins. Agree you need to style it like that to make the balayage colour look good though, don’t think it works on straight hair.

LionLily · 08/04/2021 15:42

DD has a funny twisted-looking pair of hair straighteners that does it (along with 27 bottles of styling stuff lined up on her dressing table).

I tried those straighteners one day when she was out. I looked a little deranged and rather frizzy.

KirstenBlest · 08/04/2021 15:44

It's the 2020 version of the Rachel cut. Lots of root lift with product. Tonged top layers and straightened ends and lower layers.

Branleuse · 08/04/2021 15:47

its layered, and it has highlights to accentuate them and I think shes got slight waves in her hair. Its nice

moocowmrs · 08/04/2021 15:49

I'd love this style OP but I don't think I have the skills or the time ! It keeps popping up when I search for new styles I have shoulder length fine hair, I'm sad but it doesn't seem to be good long !

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/04/2021 15:54

I came to say it reminds me of the Rachel cut too.
I love it but it would take forever on my hair, and the in between times would just look like an untidy mess.

Rooroobear · 08/04/2021 16:36

I have a mermaid hair waver to get my hair like this x

BarelyFunctioning · 08/04/2021 17:06

@IHaveBrilloHair @KirstenBlest It so IS the new Rachel cut!

Oh god I feel so old - I remember wondering if I should get the Rachel cut in the 90s.

Now here I am, pondering if I should get the 21st century version 🤦🏻‍♀️.
