Rosacea. What works and what doesn't.

It seems rosacea isn't an uncommon issue to deal with.
Sometimes its difficult to know what will help and what will cause problems, so I'm hoping we can pool experience to avoid costly mistakes.
I'm thinking more of over the counter products rather than prescription.
I can offer CeraVe am cream, Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser water gel, and L'oreal revitalift filler (+ hyaluronic acid) night cream and serum as helpful for me
And I have found Nivea moisturiser and micellar water extremely irritating.

Only thing that has worked for me & 🤞🤫 seems to have cleared the spots and itchiness is this I get it through the superdrug online prescription request. It took about a month or more to work. It kills the mites linked to rosacea.

Goldenphoenix · 07/04/2021 21:11

Rosalique is working for my red bits. Really happy with it.

dgirluk · 08/04/2021 08:23

I've just started trying Soolantra after reading about it on here (with the Superdrug prescription) and within a week it's starting to make a difference - even my husband commented on it! (It was a bit sad actually, we've been married 4.5 years and he said "it's going to be weird if it clears up, I've only ever known you with it"!). I went mountain biking on Sunday in a bit of snow (and cold) and didn't get the usual bright red and lumpy face afterwards, I'm crossing my fingers!

Also CeraVe face wash (I'll check which one) AM and PM has helped massively. I'm going to give their moisturiser a go as well when I run out of my current ones.

Another one for Soolantra, also through the online pharmacy. It’s weird looking in the mirror and not seeing a red face. I still have some thread veins but they’re easily covered with powder. I barely even wear foundation these days.

Blogdog · 08/04/2021 09:01

Neostrata redness serum has helped with redness. It’s available without a prescription (pricey though).

The real game changer was Rosex cream (prescription only). That and avoiding citrus fruits and cured meats.

Yeah isn't it caused by the Demodex mites they think? I read a lovely description of those little critters.

Control those little critters then the rosacea should sort itself out.

Isn’t it! I don’t have it badly compared to some other people, but for some reason it looked worse on zoom calls (or it always looked like that and I don’t notice it in the mirror as much) so I was layering on foundation on my cheeks + powder. I’m already only using powder and my skin feels smoother and a much nicer feel to it - softer.

The CeraVa face wash Ive been using is the green one.

My nose is permanently red, I assume it's rosacea even though I don't get much flushing or lumps on my cheeks. Is there anything that will get rid of the redness specifically? I look like I have a cold all the time & it's really starting to bother me.

Iona345 · 08/04/2021 10:53

I have the broken capillary kind. Metrosa gel prescribed works but only if you use it religiously. Also azeliac acid from the Ordinary. Skin doctors capillary clear was good for a while but seems to have stopped.

Stripped back all my skincare to la Roche posay basics (I loved skincare!)

I cover and remaining with vichy dermablend which has excellent coverage and looks natural if used sparingly.

Really annoying as it's all come on late 30s. Had lovely clear skin before.

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/04/2021 10:54

I depends what your sub type is. Nothing works for my subtype so my offering is sweet FA.

I would go for the Sollantra option first.
JellyBabiesFan · 08/04/2021 11:01

I found avoiding alcohol helped a lot.

BumBurnerBum · 08/04/2021 11:06

I have just purchased La Roche Posay Rosalique moisturiser and cc cream, has anyone had any succes with them?
Alcohol is certainly a trigger as is being out in the fresh air and exercise... I seem to have been more successful at avoiding some of these triggers more than others.

Corcra · 08/04/2021 11:08

I find rosehip oil great. Kinvara rosehip serum is my game changer.
Using an oil cleanser.
The other thing, I stopped wearing very heavy makeup (double wear), it was so worth it.

Iona345 · 08/04/2021 11:16

@BumBurnerBum I used the CC cream when my condition was lighter and loved it. Sometimes go back to it on good days.

I'm sure a lot of it is triggered (wine, spice, dairy, sun...basically anything good.)

Chewbecca · 08/04/2021 11:42

I’ve got the LRP rosalique stuff. I think my skin is better with them, but definitely not cured or gone.

BumBurnerBum · 08/04/2021 11:44

Thanks, good to hear it may help! I will report back if a miracle occurs.

Ingridlock · 08/04/2021 12:07

I have rosacea and also a bit of mild seb derm around my nose/eyebrows. I tried everything for the rosacea but nothing worked. Then I tried sebclair for the seb derm. At first it made my skin worse, but after maybe four days or so it started to improve. Both the seb derm and rosacea have gone totally. I still have some broken capillaries in my cheeks from the damage caused by the rosacea, but it's just a slightly pinky look, quite a pleasant/healthy appearance now. All the flushing has stopped and my nose is no longer red. I used to look like a tomato!

I know people will think I never had rosacea at all, and just seb derm, but my rosacea was classic pattern and flushing. Seb derm does not cause that pattern of redness right across cheeks and nose.

I think everyone finds different treatments helpful, but maybe this will help one or two of you if you haven't tried it. Nice and cheap and lasts ages!

OverTheRubicon · 08/04/2021 12:08

Soolantra is the best! Azelaic acid is also really helpful, you can get a good quality affordable version from The Ordinary.

sadie9 · 08/04/2021 12:13

Rosex cream on prescription. Spots all around my nose and chin. Mine cleared up and has never returned - so far! Takes about 3 months to get it completely gone but it does work.

CMOTDibbler · 08/04/2021 12:18

I am just red and sore on my nose, cheeks and chin - really light sensitive. I've been doing Azaelic Acid for 5 months now, and though my skin looks really good (esp my pores), it hasn't changed the redness at all.
I'm now using Soolantra (Superdrug dr prescription) and tbh after 3 weeks I can't see any difference which is a bit depressing but will give it the full 12 weeks.
Rosalique is a great coverup for me, and the Cetaphil daily defence spf50 moisturiser helps a bit with the sun sensitivity without having to add spf in February

Softpebbles · 08/04/2021 12:21

Hi ladies jumping on. Would you say this is roseca. Been like this for nearly two years. Sometimes it gets a lot angrier. It’s only on one cheek.

Would it be worth me trying soolantra. I don’t really wear make up.

Rosacea. What works and what doesn't.
lookdeepintotheparka · 08/04/2021 12:40

@Softpebbles that's what my skin was like before I was prescribed Soolantra. Has really cleared up a lot since then. I'd suggest GP who can prescribe the right treatment tho.

Heat is the main trigger for me. I didn't get on at all with CeraVe or Cetaphil. Both irritated my skin and I got breakouts again. Currently using a sensitive facial soap bar and cool water to wash off - isn't causing me any redness so will stick to it. One thing I've read is not to keep switching products too often with rosacea!

Softpebbles · 08/04/2021 13:11

Thanks @lookdeepintotheparka I read on here that nivea is no good and that is the moisturiser that I use so will look for an alternative. I tend to just use simple face wash in the shower.

That's a lot like mine - the spots are called papulopustular rosacea and can be a bit tricky to solve I found, as lots of solutions just go for the redness. But really you do have to see a GP, because so many rashes are easily confused and it would be a shame if people on a forum made you miss something more serious.

In case it is rosacea, it will be hugely improved if you use a 50 SPF or at least 30 (I like Roche Posay Anthelios) and a hat in summer, and lots of people find it improves if you reduce caffeine, spicy foods and hot showers. These are 3 of my favourite things in the world, so I've never successfully dropped them to be able to tell you GrinBlush
