Dry robes.....worth it or something else?

nevernotstruggling · 28/03/2021 21:27

For context I don't live in london Grin

We are a surf and paddle boarding family with a caravan down in Cornwall. Been eyeing the dry robes a couple of years now but achingly expensive.

What are the alternatives? Are they that life changing?

They’re fine but normal towelling robes or oodies do the same thing if you aren’t a triathlete or winter open water swimmer.

nevernotstruggling · 28/03/2021 21:34

And oodie you say? For the beach??

I would love one, but you’re right about the price. I’ve got a towelling poncho in my Amazon cart at the moment. It’ll work for drying and changing, but it just doesn’t seem as cosy as a dry robe.

Ladybigbeach · 28/03/2021 21:44

I have a moonwrap and love mine, however I do love the look of the camouflage dry robes.
Yes a towering robe works in the summer but for me my moonwrap really comes into it own in the winter.

tiggy20 · 28/03/2021 21:53

My husband has one and they are amazing. I'm always nicking it!

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 28/03/2021 21:57

I am a cold water swimmer and wouldn't be without mine, I plan on only having one and for me and my swimming friends they are totally worth the money. Thereare similar robes but the quality ones are a similar price. Buy cheap buy twice.

Knowingitsallover · 28/03/2021 22:01

My dh has one and good but also another company that make one very similar which we have think its was £80 ish bought from local watersports shop, we also have thick towelling over head adult towels that my teenagers use and are ok with
Also paddle boarding / windsurf: family

CMOTDibbler · 28/03/2021 22:06

I'm an open water swimmer and having one has been fantastic. My first was a Charlie McLeod short sleeved one, but now I have a long sleeve over the head Smoc Smoc. They come camping with us too as you can throw them on to go to the shower, or to the loo without getting dressed, and are cosy in the evening.
I do have a towelling one as well which is fine for just getting changed, but if you do stuff where you would want to sling it over your wetsuit for lunch, or going to/from the beach, or are cold after doing stuff they are worth every penny.

nevernotstruggling · 28/03/2021 22:13

Thanks folks. I'm torn really. We don't camp as we have the static so I can't justify on that front. We are more of an Easter to halloween beach family.

I can see similar products are a similar price though the gul one is much cheaper but seems to have vanished.

I could buy giraffe dd1 the adult size and be done with it and dd2 (8) a kid one and assume there's a goo resale when it's too small.

I know the kids would love them but kitting is all out will be £390!!! I feel a bit ill at that price.

You are the kind of family they're aimed at so if you want and love them then just buy them as I'm sure you'll get your moneys worth the amount of times you'll be wearing them over the years.

ImInStealthMode · 28/03/2021 22:25

Don't have one myself but I live in a very surfy/sea swimmy place and lots of friends absolutely swear by them.

CommanderBurnham · 28/03/2021 22:37

They're brilliant. I bought one when mum and baby swim class had communal changing rooms.

70sduvet · 28/03/2021 22:41

I have been stalking the camo/pink one since last August. It is never in stock, or if it is I keep missing it.
For some reason it's the one I have my heart set on and at £150 none of the others will do. Next stock is early April so I have my alarm set. I think it is def worth it. We have a similar set up to you OP and I can't wait to not be cold anymore. Plus I think it'll be great for outdoor drinks/meeting friends

thedevilinablackdress · 29/03/2021 07:41

What about these? £40

we had similar to this growing up - but mum made them for us, then they got passed down through the family. I liked this on the beach as could just through over me and then use a towel to get dry underneath and stay in it, or use it to dry or put clothes on inside and take off. I used another towel to get dry if staying in it as I didn't want the through over to be wet if sitting in it

We have these. After extensive research I went for them as the lining is much nicer than the dry robe IMO. We live by the sea and literally everyone has some variation of a dry robe, I even see people wearing them as coats.

madaboutrunning · 29/03/2021 09:17

You could try the Alpkit one - I don't have one myself but know people who have and it has excellent reviews alpkit.com/products/haven-changing-robe

Gosh that's really reasonable thank you

I have one but I am a sea swimmer. Not sure they would be worth it if not as they are not coats, they are like tents so changing etc so look naff out and about going for a walk, unless you get the black one which is less conspicuous

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 29/03/2021 13:57

You could try a towelling poncho - Amazon have them and are much cheaper.

skeggycaggy · 29/03/2021 14:01

We live in a surf spot & Dryrobes are pretty standard issue (along with a VW van & a spaniel). I wear mine for standing at the sidelines, dog walking, beach walks, & occasionally surfing. It’s great but I’m sure cheaper options do the same job.

They do a good NHS discount btw.

Teandsympathy · 29/03/2021 14:14

My children have them for swimming. They are good for getting changed but not for drying. They are very garish though and it’s funny to see so many people here swooshing around Sainsbury’s in them.

MassDebate · 29/03/2021 15:55

I love mine, and it’s massively superior to something like an Oodie. The beauty if it is that you can put it straight on over swimming things/wetsuit, then get changed under it and it wicks the moisture away so you can keep it on as a coat over clothes. Also good for keeping warm while watching kids play football/rugby!
