Babyliss as alternative to Dyson Airwrap

Is the Babyliss good enough and not very damaging to the hair? Would it work on fairly long and thick hair also? There is a huge difference in the price but as someone who cannot justify paying for any Dyson hair styling product, would the Babyliss one work just as well? I’m not someone who generally even bothers blow drying but would like the option of having something to look a bit more groomed.

I don't have the air wrap so can't comment on that or offer a comparison. But I have the babyliss and thinks it's brilliant. Takes me hair to a new level. I have shoulder length thick hair and it helps smooth it and add a bit of volume. I love me!

ElderMillennial · 27/03/2021 21:31

I don't know which "Babyliss" you mean but I have a Remington tool which I think could be similar - a drying tool with an big spinning brush. I find it gives a really great finish, a smooth and voluminous salon style blow dry. I do imagine it to be somewhat damaging though. I haven't tried the dyson air wrap but I expect it is much gentler on the hair as the other tools have the combo of a metal spinning brush and heat. I have the dyson hair dryer and think it's less damaging than other dryers.

I have a Babyliss Big Hair somewhere in the bottom of my wardrobe, which is where it has been ever since I bought my Airwrap.

You can't really compare the two, the BBH does good big hair without too much skill but a bit of effort. The Airwrap... makes me look like I have just stepped out of a salon with a few minutes, needs a bit more skill but you pick it up quickly. And my hair feels like silk.

But if you can't afford or justify the Airwrap then the BBH is great, I just wouldn't try to compare the two - the BBH costs, what, a tenth of the price so it's unreasonable to expect the same results, I would have thought...

You really can’t tell who has used a Dyson and who hasn’t. My friend got one and raved about how amazing her hair looked and felt, but it just looked exactly the same to me Grin

Dizzy1234 · 28/03/2021 09:57

I love Babyliss products, Dyson products are too expensive, had a demonstration in store pre-covid, imo not worth the money.
If your worried about damage to your hair make sure you use a heat protection spray. I use heated tools everyday and my hair is not damaged as I spray each section before any heat gets near it.
Google what your planning to buy then read the reviews

CovidCorvid · 28/03/2021 10:02

I used my babyliss once and it was so much faff and not much different I didn’t bother again. I bought a revlon hot air brush which doesn’t spin and is much easier to use and I like that. No idea about dyson.

yellowlorry123 · 28/03/2021 10:05

I don't have a Dyson but would love to try one. It's a lot of money so I'm afraid to invest

Have used the BBH for years. It doesn't get that hot so not too bad for hair. Better than Straightening. It worked well on me when I had longer layered hair. It doesn't really curl but it gives it a wave and a bounce and smooths out frizz.

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 28/03/2021 11:15

Hmmm, well I have a set of GHD that is used fewer than 5 times a year. I like the idea of my hair looking really groomed, but can you be bothered with styling. I get bored using the hairdryer so can’t even say I blow dry my hair properly. A styling tool was really to dry/style half dry hair and if it’s easy to use I might bother, if you see what I mean. I don’t look scruffy, generally; I would just like to look a bit more “polished”.
I do like how my hair looks after a visit to the salon (once or twice a year Grin), however. And maybe it’s because I’m aware I may be looking more aged I would like to appear smart and put together.

I’ve had BBH, the Remington now got an Air Wrap. My shoulder length thin hair still looks like shit but the Air Wrap is much less damaging.
I got the most body with the Remington but it fried my hair.

gottakeeponmovin · 28/03/2021 11:28

I don't think you can compare them tbh. The Dyson does make your hair look better - when I got it everyone commented. I struggle with the air wrap though - the straighteners are better

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 29/03/2021 08:10

Gottakeeponmovin what do you find difficult about the air wrap? Perhaps I might find it tricky, too as I’m useless at styling so maybe the dryer of straighteners would be better for me.

If your aim is to be a bit more groomed and you are a bit cack handed, maybe try the Revlon one step?

It's about £30, or goes up and down on amazon and boots until it can be often got for £30.
It dries and styles at the the same time and gives a bouncy blow dry with a shiney finish.

I usually leave my hair to naturally dry to about 30% damp, put in some protective spray and blast with this. It takes about 5 mins and looks like a salon blow-dry. It doesn't do curls, just smooths and turns under/out.
I can add curls with Ghd's if I want (usually cant be bothered)

I have a long bob, my sister has one and she has bra length hair and it works for her too.

This doesn't take much longer than a normal blast with a hairdryer whereas all the Dyson or Babyliss tutorials I've seen look a lot longer.

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 29/03/2021 12:41

This is helpful. I want to look nice but am unmotivated to learn to do more ! Hair is thick ish and presently below mid back (and might grow longer as it looks a bit odd at its present length). And £30 ish is a tenth or less of a Dyson.

I have a Big Hair Babyliss - I use it all the time and it tames my frizz and is fairly easy to use once you've got the hang of it. It works best when your hair isn't too wet and if you section it. I can't leave the house without using it

KatharinaRosalie · 29/03/2021 17:05

yes same here. Not comparable and my hair looks so much healthier.

kirkandpetal · 29/03/2021 19:35

You do need to persevere with the BBH. It's awkward at first but you soon get the hang of it and I can now do it (switching direction of the barrel roll) without thinking and without any tangles.

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 30/03/2021 12:06

I think I had the BBH confused with this one:

Does it compare to the revlon one?

I sent my air wrap back 🙈 utter rubbish, the curls don't last beyond an hour!

torquewench · 30/03/2021 12:19

I've a BBH for about 5 years and use it more or less every day on my fine, just past shoulder length hair. It makes it look bouncy, shiny and styled/groomed. I had an Airwrap for 2 months but sent it back, it was just too much of a faff, hair blowing everywhere with the barrels, the curls dropped more or less straight away, the brushes made my hair full of static and frizzy, it just looked untidy, lots of short hairs sticking up along my parting and on top of my head I also found it got too hot. I had it from QVC and persevered with it nearly every day during lockdown last April/May, but just could not justify the cost for worse results than I get with the BBH or big barrel tongs. I have a Dyson hairdryer and love that though.

I am looking at GHD glide as a possible replacement when it packs in, anyone have opinion to share on that?

ChequerBoard · 30/03/2021 12:26

They really aren't comparable at all. I have both, love my Airstyler and find it easy to use and achieve hairdresser worthy results with. It's quick, light and improves the finish of my hair, smooth and silky, no frizz.

The Babyliss is very heavy, cumbersome to use, takes much longer to dry hair and just doesn't give the same sleek results as the airstyler.

I'm afraid this is one of those 'you get what you pay for' moments.

lorettaobrian · 30/03/2021 13:18

Another fan of air wrap here. Put it off due to cost and I'm a very very low maintenance person - I've chopped hair short to avoid having to style, I'm so lazy. But find the air wrap fantastic for my hair to put a glossy bounce and curly blow dry volume look with minimal effort. Wouldn't use for "defined" curls - would use tongs/gsd for that - but for effortless daily vavavoom, perfect.

KatharinaRosalie · 30/03/2021 13:39

Yes I agree that it's not best for defined tight curls. That's probably why many people are disappointed. It's great for getting a sleek bouncy slightly wavy blow-dry in just a few minutes though.

torquewench · 30/03/2021 18:25

I was intrigued by the comment about the BBH being "very heavy" so Ive weighed mine - its the 50mm one, weighs about 350 grams, or 0.77 of a pound if you prefer old money, with the Dyson weighing in at 660g or 1lb 1oz according to the Dyson website... Also, I recall the AirWrap vids saying it was best used on 80% dry hair, same as the BBH. Im pleased with the (better on my hair) results it gives for 1/10th of the cost 😂

70sduvet · 30/03/2021 18:35

@Blahblahblahyadayadayada

The revlon one step is this in the pic attached.
It's £49.50 on amazon today, but I bought it for £30 and friends have all got it around that price. I recommend it all the time for quick hair.

It is just style and go. No faff, the prongs are quite rigid like a wet hair brush, the babyliss one you linked looks more like a bristle brush. It may give more bounce but may also tangle more or need more skill. This needs none.

Though the babyliss def looks like it will give more "looks" from the one appliance and could give similar results to the Dyson even if the delivery system is slightly different, hot v cool air
