Clothes like a judo suit?

GarnOut · 22/03/2021 00:09

One of the outfits that suits me most is my judo suit. I’m 5’, hour glass size 12. Can anyone think of how I could replicate a version of this look in everyday life? Some of the brands that seem to have something on the lines I’m after such as Gudrun Sjoden seem to be for much taller, leaner women than me. I would love something with clean, simple lines, belted at the waist and preferably with dropped shoulders and some trousers that are like my judo ones. Any ideas/recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Jumpsuit with a jacket? Try some of the petite ranges.

It's the clean lines etc

How about a belted kimono with the type of trousers you like?

Floisme · 22/03/2021 10:44

I'm afraid I've no suggestions but I'm shamelessly listening in op. I've got some Jujitsu trousers that I've had 30+ years and they come out every summer: simple shape, flattering, comfortable, and in a brilliant sturdy fabric - which I don't think I'd get now if I bought new.

I've thought of having have copies made (but with pockets added, which is my only complaint about them) or trying to do it myself, but it would mean taking them apart and I can't bear to do that.

As for the jacket, I'm absolutely kicking myself for getting rid of it.

LunaHeather · 22/03/2021 10:59

When I saw this post, I thought it was a brilliant idea.

Flo, what fabric were the trousers made of please?

Floisme · 22/03/2021 11:16

They're a heavy, cotton canvass Luna. To be fair, you can still get what looks like a similar quality but, the last time I looked, it wasn't far off a 3-figure price tag (and came with prominent logos which I really don't want). However I've also thought of buying a cheap and cheerful polyester set from somewhere like Decathlon and taking them apart to use as a template. Just never got round to it. Would that work for you op? You could then get them made up in different fabrics?

I have an ASOS white wrap summer dress in a thick, canvassy fabric that is very flattering. I always call it my Judo Dress! Might be worth looking on EBay to see if you can find one as I've had it a few years now so probably isn't available on the site any longer

You can get cheap off brand ones if you look around Smile In fact they may be better for wearing for what you want @LunaHeather. My current Gi (aka martial arts suit) was almost £200 but I can’t imagine wearing it casually as it’s too thick - it’s designed to be tough, durable and so on. It definitely softens up as you wear it but if you get a cheaper one it will likely be thinner and softer...

@GarnOut I reckon look for things like wide leg trousers, wrap over jackets/tops, ‘kimono’ inspired jackets and so on. Places like Plumo, Toast, LF Markey come to mind and might have some stuff you’d like. Maybe in cotton or linen. Etsy might also have some good options.

LunaHeather · 22/03/2021 12:43

Ah....it will be the thickness that makes them hang so well?

I'm fairly well stocked at the moment but had been thinking about "uniform" going forward. My sensory issues are very high atm so no jewellery. I used to jazz up something plain with a necklace but not any more.

It's a good thought and I do want to get started on learning to sew. Hopefully the OP will get some good information from here.

Pigtailsandall · 22/03/2021 12:57

I recently bought a dropped shoulder, wide-belted kimono-style dress from Kin which fits your description. It's very flattering but I do wish the fabric was a bit heavier.

GarnOut · 22/03/2021 13:25

Oooh thanks Pigtails. That sounds good.

Floisme it wouldn’t mean taking them apart.

I used to be a pattern cutter. There’s a nifty little tool called a tracing wheel which stops the need to take them apart.

Floisme · 22/03/2021 13:55

I think my problem Salanda is that I'm not after fighting quality - those days have gone and I don't really want to pay a fighting premium. But for aesthetic reasons, I'd still like that weight and heaviness and durability. As Luna says, the weight means they hang really nicely, they're not see-through and they just keep on going year after year. I like clothes that get better the more you wear them. I'm talking mainly about the trousers mind you, although I'm cross with myself for getting rid of the jacket.

Sorry for gate crashing your thread, op and I hope some of this is useful to you too.

Floisme · 22/03/2021 13:57

Ooh and thank you Arse - sorry I didn't see your post. I'm off to google tracing wheels right now!

Yes, completely see what you mean. A thinner one wouldn’t hang in the same way and would look flimsy. I bet you could get good quality second hand ones on eBay and so on - lots of people buy sports gear and then don’t stick to the sports so may be worth a try!
GarnOut · 22/03/2021 16:57

Eve I really like that shirt but it is too long and if the tie is fixed it probably won’t be in the right place being only 5’

Jigsaw link

I googled kimono jacket

GarnOut · 22/03/2021 19:46

IloveShula. I love that jacket. It’s sold out though 😬

With linen, it's hard to tell what kind will be a wrinkly mess after two minutes. Does it need to be thick linen or is it that it needs some stretchy fabric in it too?

Veterinari · 22/03/2021 20:03

Another jigsaw belted jacket - it actually came upon another thread as being rather judo-esque
