Foreo Bear users -Sally Hughes of the Guardian says all such devices are a useless waste of money. Is that true?

BigButtons · 21/03/2021 14:17

I have been stealing myself to pay the £££‘s.

Online reviews are all positive but then in yesterday’s Guardian the beauty person said that facial muscles don’t sag and it was all about loss of collagen therefore micro current devices would not work.
I want her to be wrong because I want it to work. I also want her to be right so that I can save my money.
Thoughts?

@TruffleShuffles

I disagree, I have the nuface mini and you see instant results with it. They don’t necessarily last but it definitely works and as long as you use it daily you do get results.
I had zero results with it and sent it back.

@Umbivalent

There I was thinking that she knew what she was actually talking about

Well. Hmm. You may find a few people who are somewhat, shall I say, sceptical about Sali Hughes.

I'm not sure how she is qualified to talk about facial musculature?

I mean, we know she understands Botox (when she finally had to admit she uses it) but does she understand the muscles and skin in the face?

Agreed. Rather cynically, I wonder if she isn't endorsing these devices because she hasn't been paid to do so. It's in her best interests to plug as many other brands that promise the world with their products, as that means more money for her in the long run, even though the products may not be as effective as the device in question.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that SH is merely a beauty journalist. She has no qualifications relevant to giving out skincare advice. She is paid by brands to promote their products, she is a saleswoman.

BigButtons · 24/03/2021 12:50

Will stop reading her stuff.

I like her stuff about foundations, or where to get cheap as chips mascaras, etc etc. But really that's as far as it goes.

autumnboys · 24/03/2021 20:16

I’ve had mine for about a month and use it twice a day. I bought it from Look Fantastic who email me all the time with discount codes, so I waited until it was 20% off and got one. I’ve just got off a zoom where for the first time in a year I wasn’t thinking mostly about how awful I looked. Of course that might also be because I’m slathering on The Ordinary Hyraluronic twice a day. Who knows? I am going to keep going with it and see.

BigButtons · 24/03/2021 21:00

Have just ordered one from space nk with a 20% discount and loads of freebie creams. I am really hoping it works for me too. Apart from SH I haven’t heard any negative reviews about it.

BeforetheFlood · 24/03/2021 21:07

I caved today as well and got one from Look Fantastic with 20% off, and also 10% on Topcashback.

I've felt so down about myself these past few months that even if it has precisely arse all visible effect, I'll at least feel like I'm doing something. (Hoping it will have a visible effect though!)

Thanks to patient and knowledgeable posters who take the time to share info and experiences.

BigButtons · 24/03/2021 21:21

Damn I forgot all about top cash back!

Just reading Sat’s paper and remembered this thread.
The SH review says: ‘I do believe that facial muscle massage, whether via exercises, therapists, Chinese gua sha tools or micro current gadgets, gives a noticeable perkiness and firmness to many ( including me).’

It goes on: ‘But gadgets claims of longer lasting firmness don’t quite stack up’

Much the same as many PP on this thread, then. Not quite ‘all devices are a waste of money.’

Works in the short term, so keep on with it and you’ll see an effect. But stop using it, and you’ll notice the change.

BigButtons · 25/03/2021 07:16

I agree really. Another journalist was discounting them as the effects ‘don’t last’

Well you can say that about many things. Exercising your body is the same.

Flambola · 25/03/2021 21:16

I’m seeing a plastic surgeon consultant for facial paralysis, I’ll ask her opinion of them.

Californiabakes · 26/03/2021 19:06

Got mine today and just completed my first treatment

BigButtons · 26/03/2021 19:33

Mine’s arriving tomorrow. Very excited😀

OP posts:
BeforetheFlood · 26/03/2021 20:04

Mine arrived today, but I'm 24 hrs post vaccine and wiped out! Haven't got the energy to focus on working out how to use it. Did you find it easy Californiabakes?

Californiabakes · 26/03/2021 21:01

Yes it was surprisingly easy to set up and do the treatment. My face feels slightly achey tonight.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 26/03/2021 21:38

@flambola I hope that goes well for you and isn't as bad as it sounds Flowers

Brillenbar47 · 26/03/2021 22:02

Can I ask what serum people are using with this once they have run out of the tiny tiny sample that comes with the bear? Thanks

Flambola · 26/03/2021 22:20
@flambola I hope that goes well for you and isn't as bad as it sounds Flowers
Ah thank you! It is actually, I’ve had some Botox, will be getting an eye weight and a bottom lid lift, then the big one, a free gracilis muscle transfer, where some of my gracilis muscle will be transplanted into my face to give me a dynamic smile!
But this is all on the NHS, I’m just thankful that this is something they treat! I didn’t realise until quite recently how traumatising I’ve found it.

Flambola · 26/03/2021 22:22

I do actually own a NuFace Mini and I’ve found it’s helped with the sagging muscles on the right side of my face. Although that could be wishful thinking.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/03/2021 22:42

" She is paid by brands to promote their products, she is a saleswoman."

I disagree with this.

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 26/03/2021 22:56

I use loreal hydra genius aloe moisturiser when I use mine. Its cheap as chips. I also quickly do it when I'm in the shower each morning. Stops my face drying out.

I think its working. Been using it for nearly 2 months now. I posted a before picture on another thread but got it deleted so I don't have that to compare with anymore. But my jowls do seem smaller. Either way I'm going to keep using it.

ViciousJackdaw · 27/03/2021 00:58

I've got the Magnitone LiftOff - I ummed and aahed for ages about trying a device then saw this at Boots for £60 and thought 'sod it!'.

Anyway, three weeks in and I'm really happy with it. Considerable brow lift and reduction in lines (I have a 1 rather than 11s), jaw taking a little longer but is definitely improving.

Does anyone know about the long term with these devices? Can you realistically use them forever? Can they have any ill effects?

ViciousJackdaw · 27/03/2021 01:01

Oh, and as or conductive gel, I bought this after the Magnitone gel ran out - I find it's actually better. OOS right now but £10 when in stock.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 27/03/2021 08:49

I use the Vichy 89 serum with mine - I need at least six pumps (two for each side and two for my forehead) and do in sections so it doesn’t dry out.
