Shirts for casual wear to wear with jeans?

BurbageBrook · 20/03/2021 21:40

Looking for some wisdom on shirt style as in the past I've never worn causal shirts. But I'm turning 30 this year and I feel like my spring style maybe needs to mature a little? I keep seeing women styling jeans and flats with a simple shirt for casualwear and I love the look.

So if you're a shirt-wearer which shop would you recommend for this kind of thing? The style I can dress down with jeans easily? When shopping online I'm not really sure where's best and which ones look good and not too office-y for 'real life'.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Yes bucking!! That is why I rarely buy shirts tbh!!

Unlike most mumsnetters I don't hate ironing - except for shirts, which is one reason why I rarely wear them Grin

Nitgel · 21/03/2021 09:30

Uniqlo do nice shirts and the linen ones for spring are good quality and come in good colours.

QueenMabby · 21/03/2021 09:31

Also have in mind your body shape. If you’re small of bust or have a straighter figure then a crisp cotton shirt with some structure will look good. Try and put that on a busty or hourglass shape and you may find that buttons gape at the chest and you have handfuls of fabric elsewhere! In that case go for more flowy fabrics like viscose, silk or a cotton mix that will flatter the curves.

And french connection

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/03/2021 09:32

Thanks for the boden tip, some lovely ones there, nice and fresh!

Chimchar · 21/03/2021 09:39

George at Asda (don't judge!) have loads of shirts on their website, under the 'tops' section, and they're really very reasonable... you could try a couple and when you find your style, invest in some more expensive ones.

EssexLioness · 21/03/2021 10:00

Never thought of Boden but agree, some really lovely ones on there.

BurbageBrook · 21/03/2021 10:12

Thank you so much everyone, some brilliant recommendations! I am relatively small of bust and slim @QueenMabby so I will bear that in mind!

I've checked out lots of the websites mentioned above and there are some fab shirts there. My payday tomorrow so I'm going to treat myself then!

Thanks again.

I wear a shirt and jeans a lot when the weather is warmer. Most of mine are from H&M, Uniqlo, Oasis and Monsoon.

Jen435 · 21/03/2021 10:19

It's worth checking out With Nothing Underneath - I've got a few of their shirts, small company, really well made and the linen/ weave for summer are lovely and casual. Agree with PP who said the Sea Salt ones feel a bit older

Scarby9 · 21/03/2021 10:22

I am also over 40, but still confused.

Why would the Seasalt shirts linked in the first post be unsuitable for anyone under 40? Especially if the Boden ones are suitable? What is it about those shirts? I can't see it (except that I prefer the wider choice of fabrics on the Seasalt ones).

Educate me!

I wouldn't wear it and I'm over 50.
It just looks dated and out of touch and not on trend.
I don't want to be edgy like I was in my 20s and 30s but I don't want took like I'm going to meet the vicar for tea with my nan either.
Theres 1000's of good quality fashionable shirts around.
I'm not anti sea salt. I have a stretchy top of there's from a few years ago which is fabulous and a few other pieces but I do have to select carefully.

My go to for blouses is Esprit

Pigtailsandall · 21/03/2021 10:53

I was looking for nice shirts earlier too and ordered a white smock blouse from John Lewis which is great. I like quite simple stuff so I'm also considering getting this from Baukjen - I think khaki is a great, fairly neutral colour. It also seems quite trendy atm

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/03/2021 11:00

That is nice but unfortunately don't think that colour suits me. It looks really comfortable and soft.

RampantIvy · 21/03/2021 11:25

I don't think khaki suits most people TBH, and certainly doesn't suit me. I wish fashion designers would move away from colours being "trendy". Not all colours suit everyone. I'm not keen on the word "trendy" either. To me it is aimed at teenagers. I would much prefer to look stylish than "trendy".

Colours are very subjective and as someone who is a jewel winter I am often disappointed to see something I really like in a store only to find it is only available in lemon yellow, lime green and orange, for example. M & S I'm looking at you.

Re the Boden shirts - do they need much ironing?

hettie · 21/03/2021 11:31

I very nearly put this hush one on order.. It's cotton which is good, but a bit pricey

Love the style of the Baukjen shirt although I don't suit khaki either. The Sezanne shirts are just gorgeous but maybe a tad out of my price range. Never even consider Boden or La Redoute but there are some nice ones there!
I think a couple of the plainer Seasalt shirts are fine but I do think the patterned ones might be a bit old for me.

Rydale have some nice casual shirts

Authenticchicken · 21/03/2021 11:48

I don't iron the jersey blouses I have from Boden but I am not sure about the Modern shirt. Probably though. But there is a jersey version of the shirt too. I wouldn't personally need to iron jersey!

Authenticchicken · 21/03/2021 11:49

That Hush blouse is lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/03/2021 13:16

Love that, Hettie, but Hush stuff just isn't good enough quality to justify full price.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/03/2021 14:02

Totally agree remus, don't understand the hype tho agree that blouse is lovely and as it's cotton it might be different. I wonder what the price is?

Vierty · 21/03/2021 14:12

I kid you not but Tesco have the most fabulous shirts. They’re £16-£18 gorgeous material very much in the style of the hush one linked above.

RampantIvy · 21/03/2021 14:39

I think supermarkets are making the most of clothes retailers being closed, and have upped their game. DH bought two jumpers from Tesco recently. Like me he has long arms, and really struggles to buy anything with sleeves that are long enough, so online shoping is a waste of time for him.
