Please suggest some places I should start getting clothes from!

I’m increasingly disappointed with the clothes I buy from the following places:

Next - don’t fit very well and can be a bit, dull. And have started to fall apart after a few washes
ASOS - too ‘trendy’
Top shop/river island - ditto
H&M/New Look et al - not well made and a bit on the cheap side for me.

Where can I get good quality clothing, that doesn’t make me look 20 years older than I am (I’m mid 30s) and also doesn’t make me look like I am trying to relive my youth??

Please help Smile

Following with interest!

SellFridges · 20/03/2021 09:26

Since the demise of Oasis and Warehouse, I’ve mostly been getting things from Hush and Oliver Bonas. Sosander too.

There’s some good stuff on ASOS but you do need a clear idea of what you want.

I’m 40.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 20/03/2021 09:29

Well I normally would suggest Warehouse and Oasis, you can still get them online but for how much longer? Following with interest, I'm struggling too. I've ordered some things from Love and Roses via Next and sometimes M&S has the odd hidden gem.

Snezcomb · 20/03/2021 09:34

What sort of budget do you have, and what sort of things are you looking for? That will probably help with suggestions.

I’m mid 30s and haven’t shopped at the main high street shops for years. Partly because of quality and partly because of ethics. I like Liberty as it has a good range of clothing brands and it’s the one clothes shop I enjoy going to in normal times, as well as Avavav, Kitri Studio, Outnet, Sézane, and lots of small designers and British/European brands which specialise in particular items, such as Hiut for jeans, Beyond Skin, Bhava, Grenson for non-leather shoes, L’envers for knitwear (I don’t buy wool so get cotton knits).

thirstyformore · 20/03/2021 09:34

I'm 40 and in the last few years I've started shopping at whistles, hush, Mint velvet. I find I need to be much more picky with quality now I'm a bit older....I still look at some of the cheaper shops (H&M) etc but find I need to mix up up with nicer quality pieces.

I buy casual clothes from FatFace and White Stuff but it’s a bit hit and miss. I like more fitted clothing and I’m finding a lot of droopy styles at the moment.

LemonRoses · 20/03/2021 09:47

My daughter is 28. She uses Anthropology, Ted Baker, Joules, Whistles, French Connection, some Zara, Hobbs for work, something called Me and Em but I don’t know whether that’s a local boutique, and Reiss. Sometimes she’s bought evening wear from Phase Eight but not day wear.

Wherediditgo · 20/03/2021 09:53

I don’t really have a budget per se, I just don’t want to pay over the top for brands - I don’t mind paying extra for quality and fit.

I am a size 8/10 and I’m looking for a range of stuff really. I like very ‘cool, casual’ type outfits but also want some stuff for the office.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Snezcomb, you're surely the only person I will meet on MN who even knows about Avavav, let alone shops there! (I've just taken delivery of some wonderful wool trousers at the tail end of the AW sale. I too have scarcely shopped from the U.K. high street in a decade.)

OP there's a thread atm on good quality clothes, which might be worth a look, though you may find the suggestions too staid. My first thought - for you - would be Free People.

MisiaMisia · 20/03/2021 10:09

I will just add Thought, Mango and Great Plains to the list.

littleredberries · 20/03/2021 10:09

Good charity shops. We can't all be buying brand new clothes all the time. It's just not sustainable.

MindBodyChocolate · 20/03/2021 10:13

I think m&S has some great items if you look carefully - the Autograph range is often good quality and for things like jackets and coats I think they’re very good. Obviously be careful with some of the more classic styles if you’re keen not to look older than you are.

I’d also recommend &other stories, nrby, and baukjen.

Ha, good to see another Avavav fan on here!

Not sure if it’s your style, but similar ethics, have you seen Balou? I’m looking at a pair of their printed jeans for summer. www.shopbalou.com

Elzbells · 20/03/2021 11:36

Pretty much just Hush and Mint Velvet at the moment. Used to love Warehouse.

Although working from home and lockdown means my style is diluted to joggers/harems/ sweatshirts so who knows where I'll shop when I actually need to leave the house!

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 20/03/2021 12:07

have you seen ... I hadn't! Thank you, Snezcomb, what a glorious find.

Are you a La Fetiche fan? More town / term time rather than holiday-ish. I've just bought a thing or two from their A/W 21/22 pre-season shop (not available any more) having loved last winter's collection. Their summer stock is wondrously directional.

(It's taken me a looooong time to get over my long-ago City wardrobe. Think I'm hitting my stride now.)

Wow, you Avavav fans should have warned us newbies. The featured items on their website atm is truly disturbing! I’ll never be able unsee those.... boots?

Those boots are the stuff of nightmares.😂

I buy my clothes from
Ulla Johnson
Vita Kin
Isabel Marant
Sandro
Shrimps
Brora
Ghost
Ganni
Toast
Zimmerman
I just looked at the labels of the clothing which always looks good and which last well, no bobbling or bagging. I don't buy much, but if you buy quality it looks good for ages and you feel great.

TableNiner · 20/03/2021 18:22

La Redoute has a massive range of stuff so can’t generalise but you can get some good finds and don’t have to pay unless you keep stuff if you use the credit account. Delivery is £3.99 no matter what you order though :(
