What glasses to buy? Where are trends going?

I have a very wide face and square jaw. Sadly suffer from at least a fivehead if not a forehead!

Currently have a pair of quite thick, very dark tortoiseshell, and I feel like they're too severe. I'd like lighter ones but I'm a bit unsure.

Following. Getting new glasses on 1st april

IrisW · 12/03/2021 20:35

Watching this thread as I have an eye test this month and think I’ll need glasses for the first time.

Authenticchicken · 12/03/2021 20:36

Following. I also need new ones.

LadyWithLapdog · 12/03/2021 20:38

I think larger glasses and light coloured frames: rose, golden, beige (this will obviously be called caramel or something more modern).

Nextyearwillbefun · 12/03/2021 20:40

Following for advice on first set of glasses

I love the glasses on here

www.cubitts.com
Unfortunately not sure they will be able to cope with my prescription!

Ladyofmainlyleisure · 12/03/2021 20:48

The fashion at the moment is for massive, circular lenses.
These don’t suit anyone, but due to stupid fashion there are very few others available.

Was a nightmare trying to find my recent pair - I had almost no choice in the shops and I can’t but online as my prescription is very strong and I have to be sure to get the right pair for me.

Ladyofmainlyleisure · 12/03/2021 20:48

Everyone - not anyone!

darefullyciverse · 12/03/2021 20:52

I did the huge round glasses thing at age 7, I have no desire to revisit that era!

BrilliantBetty · 12/03/2021 20:54

Clear or light frames. Yes the fashion is big but if they're not dark frames it's much easier on the eye.

TheVolturi · 12/03/2021 20:58

The huge glasses do nothing for me, I wish I could wear them!
The ones that suit me are usually from the mens section, I prefer a squarer shape and they seem to suit me more.
Bloody hate wearing glasses at all.

Authenticchicken · 12/03/2021 20:59

I really don't like the big clear frames I have seen people wearing. I remember them beinf fashionable last time. The Herbrand ones are nice on Cubitts. I am about ten years behind in glasses fashion though so...

853ax · 12/03/2021 21:35

Anyone ever get frames online? Can you get them fitted/adjusted in a regular Specsavers ( or the likes) can you return if fit not right.
I've wide face frames often too small

CatSickYellowSocks · 12/03/2021 22:22

I thought I might like to try some lighter ones and did Glasses Direct a few months ago. Pretty good service, easy to choose and return so would definitely recommend them. I actually ended up with larger and darker ones than before! The light pink ones I tried just didn’t suit as much, but they still looked okay, so worth a try. I only tried online as the prospect of trying glasses in with a mask and steaming everything up each time was just too much, but these new ones are possibly the nicest I’ve ever had :)

thedevilinablackdress · 13/03/2021 08:34

It's good to know what the broaf trends are, but the best thing is to get ones that suit and fit your face. I swear by in-person consultation in a decent opticians.

TheVolturi · 13/03/2021 10:30

There was a deal on with glasses direct last year. I ordered two pairs of glasses and two pairs of sunglasses.
Only one pair out of all of them was correct. The rest had the wrong prescription entirely.
Specsavers are great in that they will adjust /repair replace your glasses for two years I think it is.

nofrizzplease · 13/03/2021 10:42

I liked the glasses Oprah wore for the interview.

MissyB1 · 13/03/2021 10:45

Lighter or even completely see through frames seem to be in. A colleague wore some yesterday and I loved them but didn’t think they would suit me, I tried them on and they looked great.
I’m the opposite to you OP, I have a tiny narrow face and really struggle to get small frames that don’t look childish!

dreamingofsun · 13/03/2021 11:12

specsavers have always repaired my glasses no quibble however long i've had them thevolturi - sure its well over 2 years for some. they never even ask or check my records

NotAPenguin · 13/03/2021 12:35

@paradyning I have Cubitts glasses with quite a complicated astygmatism/varifocal prescription - the prescription was no problem. I have prideaux which are good for my small/narrow face (so not much good for you OP). The first pair of glasses I've found that I like.

God to know thanks! Did you go for gloss or matt?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 13/03/2021 12:48

It quite significantly depends on your prescription. Having lived through the big glasses of the early 90s with very short sight, I'd say bear in mind that you'll either have to pay through the nose for the thinner lenses or have glasses that are heavy and thick at the edges for short sight or thick enough in the middle to make your eyes look magnified for long sight if you have the big frames. If you have a low prescription in either direction you'll have more freedom to choose. Lenses are better now, too. Good luck with it.

NotAPenguin · 14/03/2021 21:35

@paradyning I don't remember that being an option, which I think means I have gloss.
