If you sell/buy pre-loved clothes online, where do you use?

Ebay is so up and down and there seems to be so many hidden charges.

Vinted items sell for pennies.

I don't want to use facebook marketplace because it always seems to end up in drama/non payment/not turning up to collect etc.

I've downloaded Depop but every time I try to add anything there's no little camera icon to click on so I've given up on that.

Are there any really good facebook groups for selling clothes? I have some really nice items that still have the labels on that I know I just won't wear now so I might as well sell them so any advice would be much appreciated.

I've only ever used ebay and most of my favourite clothes are ebay buys. If I dont like things I just resell them and it seems to even out financially. I havent tried facebook for the reasons you mentioned.

RubyWooRed · 10/03/2021 15:51

Vinted doesn’t need to be selling for pennies

If you take nice clear photos , day light lit and against white background , no clutter etc.

Make sure items are ironed and looking good on a mannequin etc.

I’ve managed to get great money for items on Vinted , plus as a seller you get to keep all of the money.

If you have good quality new items , eBay should be fine to sell. There is a much larger customer base via EBay too.
The charges are pretty straightforward usually between 10-12% of selling price once you factor in eBay and PayPal fees.

SeaShoreGalore · 10/03/2021 16:02

E bay.

OhTheTastyNuts · 10/03/2021 16:06

I buy clothes from eBay - usually stuff I can't justify buying brand new such as Diesel jeans or Mint Velvet jumpers. I prefer listings to have a Buy it Now option as I'm rubbish at remembering when auctions end and so miss out. I also like being able to submit offers.

Woebegonad · 10/03/2021 16:08

Ebay - as PP says, it all evens out over time. None of the other platforms have the reach.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 10/03/2021 16:15

I buy from ebay and mostly sell on ebay. I have sold the odd thing on Facebook and depop but I prefer to use ebay as there's more buyers on there.

Lamentations · 10/03/2021 16:18

I think eBay has the furthest reach too, you just need to factor the fees into your sale price.

SkankingMopoke · 10/03/2021 16:24

I buy and sell using both Ebay and Marketplace too. I am on some brand-specific FB selling groups, but I never bother using them as their many petty rules seem impenetrable.

Items like branded clothes sell better on Ebay, but Marketplace is much better for toys/books etc. Cheaper branded kids' clothes (like Tu) I have put to one side for once the NCT sales restart.
With Ebay, I use an auction if it's something that is widely liked (eg Frugi clothing), and 'buy it now' for more niche items (eg records).
You do get a lot of time wasters on FB, but it's fine as long as you only organise pick ups around when you'd be home any way. It doesn't annoy me then if they don't show, as I haven't put myself out at all.

Yep, did all of this, even borrowed a mannequin. It was a beautiful All Saints jacket that had hardly been worn and people trying to barter down constantly. I did manage to sell it for a decent price in the end but I wasn't that impressed to be honest, maybe I just had a bad experience.

Thats a pity
I think with Vinted , because there is the make an offer option , people tend to take the piss a bit with low ball offers.

On eBay you can opt out of the option to allow buyers to make offers.
( I keep mine switched on and just set a minimum offer price I will accept , sifts out the time wasters )

MacDuffsMuff · 13/03/2021 11:46

Can I ask another question please (I'm not very good at this selling malarkey!). Is it ok to put an item on for sale in several different places, ie Vinted and eBay providing you delete it from the unsuccessful place when it sells? So if you have something on eBay which has a bid but also have that same item on Vinted and it sells on Vinted before the eBay auction has ended, would you cancel bids and remove the item from eBay? Or is that really bad form? It does seem a bit of a rubbish thing to do but I'm not sure what the 'done' thing is.

Yes to multiple sites. You have to do what is best for you, that's how everyone else is living to their lives. The person who misses out if you try to be too nice is you. Don't put "also on other sites" in your ad either, it might put some people off. Ultimately all the buyer cares about is can they have it, which is either yes or no, the reasons why aren't relevant.

RubyWooRed · 13/03/2021 12:20

Yes can list on multiple sites ,as long as you instantly delete on other sites when the item sells.

MacDuffsMuff · 13/03/2021 16:16

Thank you both, it's a bit of a minefield all this!

CherryTwin · 13/03/2021 16:58

I'd go for Ebay; there are no hidden charges on there. Private accounts get free listings each month (I think there's a limit of 100 but I'm not certain on this) then you have your final value fee which is usually 10% of the sale price including postage. Then the PayPal fee.

I sell lots on Ebay and do really well from it. It depends on the brands you are selling as to whether it's worth it or not after the fees though. For the brands I sell it is definitely worth it as they have a high resale value.

CustardyCreams · 13/03/2021 17:01

eBay. Huge choice, just set a minimum price of whatever if you don’t want to risk the occasional cheap sale.

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/03/2021 18:19

I usually use Ebay. I’ve sold quite a bit on there over the years.

However I have a jacket that remains unsold after a long time. It’s Hobbs, brand new with tags, suede biker. Thought it would be snapped up. Anyone know where else I could try to sell it?

boymum9 · 13/03/2021 18:26

Try sticking with Depop, maybe need to update app? It works really well for me and I've sold a lot if stuff very easily on there! People don't tend to knock you down on price much and it's v straight forward

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/03/2021 18:45

*@boymum9^ what sort of things have you sold on Depop? New or used?

NoNeedToArgue · 13/03/2021 19:03

But if you have an item listed on eBay, and it has one bid, you are obligated to sell it to that person so you couldn't remove it from the site because you sold it on vinted in the meantime...

MacDuffsMuff · 13/03/2021 19:56

@NoNeedToArgue I didn't realise that - I can't see where it says that on the site, can you direct me please? I've bid on something before and it was removed before the end of the auction, I assumed the person changed their mind about selling - I was the only bidder too?

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 19:59

You can’t cancel once it’s been bid on! You’re obligated to sell as that is the contract.

You will quickly earn a bad reputation if you do that!

MacDuffsMuff · 13/03/2021 20:05

You’re obligated to sell as that is the contract.

I don't think that is the case as there isn't a contract at that point?

This is from eBay's own terms so I can see that you can even if it has bids. Though I think I'll just choose one site for now and see how I get on, I don't want to mess anyone around.

If you sell/buy pre-loved clothes online, where do you use?
OP posts:
Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 20:14

Ah yes I got confused - until the auction listing ends you can still cancel (I only sell on BIN because I don’t like the hassle of bids and that way I can ensure it will sell for a price I’m happy with)!

Ninkanink · 13/03/2021 20:16

Btw I’ve sold lots of high value items on eBay (including at least 8 leather jackets) and never had any issues, problems or hassle.

BIN at price I’m happy with, no offers (unless I want to sell quickly), wait for it to sell.
