I cannot apply eye-shadow - why??

It always looks so shit. Like when Ross did it to Rachel in Friends.

I think I have hooded eyes, so I’ve googled tutorials on You Tube and follow that. It still looks shit.

Where am I going wrong? Any insights or suggestions from anyone?

I have dark eyes, dark hair and olive skin - I would’ve thought a relatively easy complexion to work with.

I would suggest following this and choosing a little pallet that only has three or four shades all meant to work together. Revlon do some lovely ones. Choose one of those where the medium colour is only a shade or two darker than your own skin tone. I find it easier to learn to blend if the "canvas" is in the same shade range. Experiment. Lots of women just try and put makeup on in the morning, but if you want to learn, you've got to try and try again until you find what works for you. And choose the right brushes. There are lots of tips for those.

Soft brush and blend a lot

I just use liquid eyeshadow, or eyeshadow crayons like the Clinique Chubby Sticks (which they've stopped selling in my region!)

Chanel do a really nice liquid eyeshadow called Ombre Premiere Lacquer: www.chanel.com/gb/makeup/p/175022/ombre-premiere-laque-new-longwear-liquid-eyeshadow/

You can just smear it on. Easy to blend two colours. Perfect for applying at 6 am. Grin

Nice soft brush and a light hand! It really depends on what you are doing, are you trying to do an all over single colour or trying to do a Smokey eye or something? Best trick i was ever taught was to go down brush sizes as your showdowns get darker.

grownup2 · 10/03/2021 11:30

I have middle aged hooded eyes and tried following yet another tutorial for them using good quality Beauty Pie palette. Result: another grubby looking mess. I agree with Racheycat that crayons or liquid is more manageable. The Beauty Pie or Laura Mercier crayon sticks are good and stay on well.

Thanks for that advice - I like the suggestion of a small palette with a few shades.

That diagram is for regular eyes (non-hooded), so unfortunately doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried and tried with that method and no joy.

But I will take a look at some other tutorials.

I also don’t understand how crayons can be more manageable, when the tip is so think. I can only imagine an unholy mess.

No answers, but i feel your pain. I tried youtube videos and looked like a hooker...

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/03/2021 17:38

I tried Smokey eyes...looked more Alice Cooper than anything

Years ago I watched this Lisa Eldridge video and it helped me www.lisaeldridge.com/blogs/videos/smokey-look-for-hooded-mature-eyes

If I blend a lot it just ends up the same colour all over though. I think my technique is off.

I am shit at make up, but sadly need it every day as I am terrible to look at otherwise.

I use this - it’s genius. Takes two seconds, does crease, and doesn't need loads of blending. www.superdrug.com/Make-Up/Eye-Makeup/Eye-Shadow/Single-Eye-Shadow/Revlon-ColorStay-Cr%C3%A8me-Eye-Shadow-Caramel/p/730173

Can you show us so we know what the problem is?

enjoyingscience · 10/03/2021 17:50

Should say doesn’t crease!

Bikeley · 10/03/2021 17:52

Smitha Deepak does some good YouTube tutorials, including ones for hooded eyes. Having said that, I cannot for the life of me get it right myself!

MoltonSilver · 10/03/2021 17:53

I have heavily hooded eyes. I've abandoned eyeshadow. I find what looks best is to concentrate on the lashes. I just tightline, curl the lashes and apply mascara. Shadow when looks bad on me even when professionally done.

Bikeley · 10/03/2021 17:56

Meant to say @op that Smitha has olive skin, dark hair and eyes so similar colouring to you by the sounds of it.

CandleWick4 · 10/03/2021 17:57

Good brushes! I have a real techniques crease brush (I’ll see if I can find a link) and it makes a huge difference - almost does all the work for me. Eyeshadow sticks are good as well, I have a couple of Laura mercier ones(I don’t recommend these specifically as all 3 have broken Envy) but they are fool proof, colour your lid in and blend the edges

Calyx72 · 10/03/2021 18:00

I have hooded eyes and the best thing I have found is don't use shadow - use eyeliner only. And mascara and curl your lashes up. If I use any shadow at all it's a wee tiny bit of light / white at the inner corner of my eye.

That would be great if you could. (Sorry for piggy backing.)

Forget everything you've been told - I've got hooded eyes and all that artistry is pointless when it vanishes into your skull as soon as you open your eyes. The best eyeshadow with hooded eyes is TWO colours. One which is nude or a shade lighter than your skin - that can go up to your eyebrow bone. The other one can be a couple of shades darker, or a 'fun' colour. Hooded eyes rock a 'fun' colour even in the workplace. Cover your whole lid with it then bring it up higher over the crease so it's visible when you open your eyes. You want about a finger clear of your eyebrow so it's not clownish. Then blend. If you want, you can also do a little brush across your lower lash line area. Cream is way better than powder in this application I use bobbi brown long wear cream shadow stick and charlotte tilbury eyes to mesmerised for my professional daily drivers.

Here's a great eyeliner guide while you're here.

Wayne Goss did a few videos on eyeshadow a few months ago, you might find them useful.

mommybunny · 10/03/2021 18:30

Wayne Goss did a video about 5 years ago called “The Straight Line Trick” for hooded eyes that I watched a couple of days ago. I tried it yesterday and made a right mess but tried again today and was rather pleased with it. The key, as with all things, is practice.

(Sorry, I’m a total luddite when it comes to linking videos but if you search Wayne Goss and “straight line” it should come up.)

MarisPiper92 · 10/03/2021 18:35

@BeagleEagle (because you sound like you know what you're doing!) - any ideas for those of us who don't have a finger gap between eye and brow? Mine are ridiculously close together, and along with hooded and downturned eyes I'm starting to think the best eyeshadow look for me is none.
