Comfortable trousers which don't look like I have given up

I have just turned 60 and a short size 14. I have worn jeans all my life but am looking for an alternative for the summer. I hate elasticated waistbands and am not prepared to go into crimplene or equivalent just yet. Any ideas for comfortable trousers which can be dressed up or down, or are you an older jeans person who can recommend me a brand/style?

I have no suggestions for you but am hoping to get some answers! I am 58 and struggle to get nice trousers which are not jeans. I don't mind a bit of a stretchy waistband though.

Are we allowed to wear cargo pants - or whatever they’re called; those trousers with all the pockets that we all used to wear in the 90s - again? I always found them flattering, forgiving, comfortable but still slightly “cool”.

Oly4 · 05/03/2021 09:15

M&S chinos are comfy and flattering. I’m a mere 44 and love them for summer with the bottoms rolled up

Oly4 · 05/03/2021 09:16

The ones I like are the £19.50 ones

mrssmiling · 05/03/2021 10:01

Another vote for M&S chinos. I’ve also bought comfortable summer trousers from White Stuff, Seasalt, Boden, Gap and Monsoon. A very stylish friend recommended Robell trousers. John Lewis would be worth a browse too.

VinylDetective · 05/03/2021 10:19

Does crimplene even exist any more? My summer uniform is M&S linen trousers rolled above the ankle. Chinos are too hot in our recent balmy summers.

Take a look at Sweaty Betty joggers. Something 'fitted' around the waist so it doesn't balloon out at the hips. Also, you could look at jogger jeans as a halfway house?

BehindMyEyes · 05/03/2021 11:48

Look at Saint and Sofia trousers . I haven't bought yet but am thinking of it .

VictoriaLudorum · 05/03/2021 13:27

I am 60+ and stopped wearing jeans when I was 50.
I like cords and velvet trousers in winter (Brax Carola) and cotton, linen or silk in the summer.
I don't have any elasticated waistbands, though. Don't need them :-)

DidgeDoolittle · 05/03/2021 13:35

I work in a shop that sells Robell trousers. It's only a little shop but we sell hundreds of pairs of these each season. They are fantastic. Comfortable, stylish and hard wearing.

Boden Richmond - I have them in 5 colours!

Oly4 · 05/03/2021 14:22

Boden Richmond are lovely but quite smart and work-like.
If you like wide leg, I can recommend the Boden linen trousers, they are top quality

waltzingparrot · 05/03/2021 14:26

Back to your roots 70s culottes

There was a thread on here last month about how shite their customer service was. I like Baujken , their Neath pants are nice
Notavegan · 05/03/2021 14:29

I got saint and Sofia a few weeks ago and feel a bit over priced.
I wear next joggers, tied elastic waist but flattering. Petite sized.
Also my cropped chinos from fat face were a good buy. Wearing really well (unlike the saint and Sofia after 2 washes!)

SummaLuvin · 05/03/2021 15:06

I like Sezane Clara trousers, and I find them comfortable, can be smart or casual.

ImperfectTents · 05/03/2021 15:21

I have trousers like these hush ones www.hush-uk.com/monaco-chambray-trousers-blue/002053-3529.html but mine were from new look and £12. Comfie and stylish

I was going to say Saint & Sofia. I have their Runway pants which are a beautiful Italian fabric, loose straight legs ( not quite wide enough to be Palazzo) and hang very nicely. Buy your usual size. They look nice with trainers but would work with boots.

Sorry...going off theme somewhat but having problems finding Next 360 jeans ...cant see on website. Ordered after reading reviews on here and need a new pair. These are the most fabulous Jean's ever and got biting panic on!! Thanks in anticipation

Craftycorvid · 06/03/2021 09:05

Oska - not cheap but often lurking on eBay as a bargain. They are beautifully cut too.

yoshiblue · 06/03/2021 09:10

Definitely chinos, rolled up slightly and you can wear with a plimsoll or similar.

My Gap ones are on my last legs as I like the fit so much but will need to get new this year.

Frumpypigskin · 06/03/2021 09:23

Have a look at Cos - they've got quite a few elasticated waists that still look good, like this one: www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/trousers/product.drawstring-trousers-blue.0973786002.html

squashyhat · 06/03/2021 09:34

Thanks for all your great suggestions. I like the M&S chinos - it's just a pity the colours are so meh. I did have some great Gap ones a few years ago but I suspect I wouldn't get them in my current size. Not going into joggers I'm afraid!

I'll investigate the other recommendations. Thanks all.

Notavegan · 06/03/2021 10:48

The next joggers are not actually joggers, I'm not sure why they remanded them that. They get recommended quite often on here. The print ones don't need ironing and are brilliant for travel.

Annebronte · 06/03/2021 15:33

Me and Em do fabulous trousers in all sorts of styles.
