How would you style this dress?

Help!

I bought this dress for a wedding of a very dear friend of mine a year ago. The wedding has now been postponed twice but hopefully going ahead in September. I still love the dress and obviously haven't had any other occasion to wear it but I'm stuck on what shoes to wear with it. What colour/style would you suggest?

I'm not averse to heels although I haven't worn any in a loooong time. Would love to make it look a bit edgier with a boot but not sure I'm brave enough to do that at a wedding?

I don’t think it looks like a wedding guest dress, rather a casual day dress. Boots make it look casual. Heeled barely there sandals would make it look more glamorous and therefore more wedding appropriate. You would also need to put in extra effort with hair/makeup to step the dress up.

But then again you don’t have to - wear what you want however you want. I’m sure no one is going to bat an eyelid regardless.

massistar · 03/03/2021 15:56

Thanks @flakymate . It's dressier than it looks in the pictures as it's quite a floaty material. And for someone who spends their days in jeans and gym gear it feels really dressy! Good point on the sandals and will probably wear my hair up.

Nice dress.

Are you wearing a jacket and if so, what colour?

Depending on the wedding maybe boots like this could work, if the wedding isn't too formal? With really good nude tights?

September is tricky because it's hard to know what the weather could be like, and it might be too cold for sandals.

massistar · 03/03/2021 19:17

Ooh they are lush @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie . That's the kind of thing I was thinking. Ceremony and reception all indoors at a hotel so not planning on a jacket. I could dance all night in those babies but are they too casual?

I’d wear these but they are Gucci and pricey - or something like these. They match the slight retro-ness of the dress IMO.

I suppose it depends on the hotel/your friend. I've rarely been to 'posh' weddings!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/03/2021 19:40

Or something like these sandals?

BabloHoney · 03/03/2021 19:41

No advice as I have zero sense of style but just wanted to say I love that dress it’s gorgeous!

massistar · 03/03/2021 19:43

Like the idea of the block sandal. The wedding really won't be that posh!

massistar · 03/03/2021 19:44

Thanks @BabloHoney. I loved it as soon as I tried it on. Gutted it's been hanging in my wardrobe for a year. Grin

These could be a compromise between a shoe and boot (shoob?) Grin

I like the shoobs above, they look like the perfect compromise!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/03/2021 20:07

I personally don't like those shoob things, sorry. I think go boot or go shoe/sandal, rather than something weirdly in-between.

XiCi · 03/03/2021 20:35

I love it. You are well out of order posting that link now its out of stock
I love the shoe boots above

dudsville · 03/03/2021 20:45

That's a beautiful dress!

flakymate · 03/03/2021 20:46

For a jacket, try a blazer? I love a good boxy, oversized blazer like this and would wear as a cape if the weather gets nicer through the day.

massistar · 03/03/2021 21:43

Not mad keen on the shoobs. Lusting after the original Mint Velvet boots.. might just buy them anyway? They'd be a lovely spring boot with jeans? 🤣

Do it! 😂

Kintsugi16 · 04/03/2021 08:36

Nice dress
I would go for sandals in a neutral colour

The boot idea is great but as all inside I think sandals would be better. Yes to hair up, dangly earrings and bracelet/bangle/cuff.
Bright lipstick or nude lipstick and bright bag. It needs something to lift it.

Notanotherhun · 04/03/2021 08:53

Chic nude heels. Or similar nude flats for dancing. Nobody is looking at your feet.

CaptainWentworth · 04/03/2021 10:01

It’s a lovely dress and not casual at all (no idea why PP said that) - I’ve worn those types of dress from Reiss before and you are right, the fabric is beautiful.

I’d go for simple, streamlined nude pumps like these
www.johnlewis.com/l-k-bennett-floret-pointed-toe-court-shoes/trench-nappa/p3567132

although I am possibly old fashioned, but I think something like that would look good no matter the weather and would be much more wedding appropriate than boots. Lower heeled versions also widely available.

Or these if you want more of a block heel?
www.johnlewis.com/kurt-geiger-london-burlington-block-heel-court-shoes/natural-sand-leather/p4761063

I’d also carry a small black or nude handbag and wear a black or nude cocktail hat, but I love an excuse for a hat and lots of people don’t wear headgear for weddings these days.

massistar · 04/03/2021 10:20

Thanks CaptainWentworth. I was a bit taken aback by that too but most other posters have liked the dress so think I'm good.

Found these whilst looking at your links which might be good compromise?

Or maybe these ones?

www.johnlewis.com/whistles-hallie-leather-strappy-sandals/pale-pink/p5051128

To be honest I think by the time the wedding comes around we'll all be so overjoyed to be out partying nobody will give a monkeys!

massistar · 04/03/2021 10:20

Love the idea of a hat btw.. what's a cocktail hat??

OP posts:
CaptainWentworth · 04/03/2021 13:42

Both those sandals would work I think @massistar- was thinking you maybe wanted an alternative to sandals which is why I linked to shoes. I’d personally go for shoes so I could wear very sheer tights but that’s just me- anything nude toned and with a bit of a heel would work I reckon.

A cocktail hat is a small hat, bigger than a fascination but not a full on big brimmed creation- think the kind of the the Duchess of Cambridge wears to formal occasions:
