I literally never see clothes I like. Just me?

Or is your wardrobe shrinking through natural attrition?.

It’s not just you. I really struggle to find anything I like. It’s either too expensive, a horrible colour on me, unflattering or there’s a strange embellishment that puts me off.

PainterInPeril · 01/03/2021 23:10

@Fluffycloudland77 Have you considered designing and making your own? (I'd love to do this but I can't.) You could end up setting up your own fashion house!

Motherwell91 · 01/03/2021 23:14

I was just about to start a thread on this topic! I've gone from a size 20 to a 16. I can't find anything I like and think I've lost my sense of style. I'm turning 30 soon so I don't known if this is effecting my choices as I feel everything looks to 'young' for me.
I know clothes don't really have an age bracket but I really don't see anything I like or would feel comfortable in

Every word of this is to true. Especially the last one! I’ll find a lovely classic item and turn it round and it has a massive studded bow on the back or something
thedevilinablackdress · 02/03/2021 07:37

Where are you looking and what do you like?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/03/2021 07:43

Same! It's so rare for me to love clothes anymore. The only item of clothing I've bought recently that I love is a long black cashmere cardie - and that's only because it's so comfy.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 02/03/2021 07:53

Me!
I'm really fortunate that I have a good figure but often feel it's totally wasted on me!
I'm a size 8 with long legs, tiny waist etc and always think I'd look bloody great if someone else dressed me Grin
I also hate all shoes, never see any I like, I literally own 3 pairs and don't get me started on bags.....

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/03/2021 08:49

A lot of clothes are cut to conceal rather than flatter now @Littlefluffyclouds13, they don’t cut for people with waists anymore.

Everything’s so long now too, I’m 5’ 5” so too tall for petite ranges but normal stuffs so long in the body on me but the sleeves are too short & I like my wrists covered for warmth.

Shoes now look like the chunky loafers we wore in the early 90’s. They looked shit then too but I see well groomed young women wearing them Confused with short skirts.

When I was young you literally couldn’t buy a high neck top but now it’s all high necklines & nothing nice is low cut.

I want white cotton camisoles with no strap adjusters because they dig in when I lean back that you can’t see my bra through but the fabrics so thin now it’s like muslin. Dhs T shirts are a lovely thick cotton so why can’t our cotton be thick? Also they pay the same or less for more material.

Agree re. the quality of menswear re. women's.
I've had good cotton t-shirtsvand vests from Rapanui.

TableNiner · 02/03/2021 10:14

I'm on no spend but it's not so hard when there's nothing exactly tempting. The fabrics tend to be awful. It's all quite samey too. I wonder if Covid and Brexit have made companies play safe and dull. I think there's also been a merging of the generations (rows about skinny jeans aside) so very little differential between clothing lines even when ostensibly their target markets are different. So suddenly oversized sweatshirts are everywhere, or whatever the thing is, which is a problem if they don't suit or you don't like them.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/03/2021 10:21

Also, as has been pointed out, it doesn't help when your figure isn't fashion. I'm slim with big boobs. I need to wear fitted clothes or everything hangs from my boobs and makes me look massive, and I can't wear high necks really. Problem is what's in fashion atm is loose fitting, shapeless sacks with high necks! Confused

CandidaAlbicans2 · 02/03/2021 10:23

Me too, and I've been like that for all the years I've been buying my own clothes. Initially it was because I was into alternative fashion/indie/punk so not on the high street, but now it's because I just don't see anything that I think "ooh I like that!" without some feature ruining it for me. It's either I love the style but not the colour or print, or the skirt's the wrong length, or it's something I'll never wear. I've been trying to put together a work outfit and it's been a struggle because everything is just so meh and not me.

Ilovemaisie · 02/03/2021 10:31

I can walk through just about any clothes shop and think
baby clothes =adorable
kids clothes = cute and practical
mens/teen boys clothes = ooh that's nice, women's and teen girls = urrrrrgh.
Even women's t-shirts are crap. Weird shapes, dull colours, stupid slogans. I go to the mens T-Shirt section of Primark and they have simple plain t-shirts in all the colours of the rainbow. The women's = black, navy, grey, poo brown or those stupid stripes.

LookingGlassMilk · 02/03/2021 10:32

Hardly anything in the shops looks good on me. I'm a size 8/10 with 30GG boobs. All the tops are baggy with high necks. They just hang off my boobs and make me look like I have a huge belly. The high necks make my boobs look even bigger and frumpy.

I'm glad wide legged and flared trousers are coming back in, because they help balance my figure out, but I wish I find nice fitted tops.

ShrikeAttack · 02/03/2021 10:35

I think you just need to find shops/designers that follow an aesthetic that you like and stick mainly to them. I can always find loads of things I like and have to spend a long time mulling over which to get.

Me & Em have jersey camis Fluffy, nice and thick too. They are viscose rather than cotton but it's a lovely thick jersey here.

What sort of things are you after?

ExConstance · 02/03/2021 10:41

I agree, dresses are voluminous and natural fabrics hard to find. I find the "age gracefully" brigade - see "That's Not my age" in the Telegraph and Instagram so depressing. Yes, one person can artfully pose in baggy beige knits and corduroy and look fairly OK but as a look for most people, especially the short ones, it is not flattering. I have recently bought a skirt and T shirt from Hush, T shirt and linen pinafore dress from Whitestuff, a close fitting jersey dress from Boden and a jersey midi skirt from Brora (sale) They are all OK for me, and I hope I will look good in them this summer. I was reassured by an article in The Sunday Times Style section that glamour, glitz and heels will be back before long as a reaction to the pandemic coming to an end.

ShrikeAttack · 02/03/2021 10:42

I don't like chunky loafers either, I just got these for Spring.

BikeRunSki · 02/03/2021 10:48

I don’t always find the styles work for me, but Crew Clothing is very reliable for colours that suit me (blonde hair, blue eyes).
I no longer have a particular “go to” shop, and with lockdown, haven’t bought much other than wooly jumpers for wfh.

ExConstance · 02/03/2021 10:50

Polyester is my bugbear, cheap to manufacture with and horrible to wear.. I'm quite fond of The Fold for more formal stuff, they use a lot of natural fabrics, especially silk and if you buy a silk top from them the cami that comes with it will be silk too.

whatswithtodaytoday · 02/03/2021 10:51

Yes, I completely agree! Fashion at the moment is just not cut for my figure - I need low necklines (pref V neck) and fitted waists. I was looking though Asos recently and found absolutely nothing I liked - I am nearing 40 and presumably not their target demographic, but just a couple of years ago pre-baby I was mainly wearing Asos.

I need some new summer bits and am despairing - I just want cotton v neck tops and dresses, surely not so hard to find!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/03/2021 11:05

I noticed a couple of nice cotton dresses in the Superdry sale (not one of my usual stores, but it came up on my Facebook news feed). Nice, at least, until I looked closely and realised none of them could be worn with a bra! Most had spaghetti straps and the ones that didn't all had cut sways in the back right where a bra strap would sit!

I'm a G cup, I need a proper bra! It's a conspiracy against big-boobed women!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 02/03/2021 11:25

I do see clothes I like (wide legged high waisted jeans etc) but I’m annoyed by the boring colour palette. Black, white, grey, navy and pale pink. I don’t suit white, pale grey or pale pink, so almost all my tops are black or navy. And I’m an hourglass - sweatshirts look horrible on me!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/03/2021 11:32

I agree - both about sweatshirts and on the boring colours!

crumbsnamechange · 02/03/2021 11:36

Colours are awful and have been so for a few years! All neutrals and pale pastels.

I'm a Bright Spring and a proper vivid green or fun turquoise is rarer than hen's teeth.

I'm looking into United Colours of Benetton because it seems to be one of the few shops who actually do a colour other than pale pink.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/03/2021 11:47

There also seems to be a lot of brown-tinted shades - burgundy, khaki, mustard, rust orange. I have fair but yellow tinted skin and they just make me look sallow and ill. I can wear the "bright" version of those colours - so red, a vivid green, a bright yellow, a corally-orange - no problem, but can I hell find them anywhere!
