'Mom' jeans - for all ages?

MacDuffsMuff · 24/02/2021 14:10

Yes I know I should wear the fuck I want and for the most part I do, but these have me in a bit of a quandry. I bought a pair, a lovely pair, and I think I like them but 14-year-old DD was clearly tying herself up in knots trying not to be rude while saying I was too old for them.

I love those other jeans mum.
You really suit these straight leg ones mum.
Do you really think you would wear them?

I should add that she is the most polite girl and would never in a million years say 'you look ridiculous and you're too old for them' but I sense that may be what she's thinking Grin and she'd definitely trying to steer me away from them.

So, without me saying how old I am, do you think this style is for all or should I leave them to the young movers and shakers?

Maybe she doesn't want you to wear them because she does?

GrumpyHoonMain · 24/02/2021 14:46

If you are slim and shapely with a small toned waist and hips then go for it.

Frequentflier · 24/02/2021 15:06

I really don't think they suit most women, but I do not think age is a factor. I agree you need a very flat and toned belly( looks sadly at own belly quivering like a pannacotta).

ExConstance · 24/02/2021 15:32

I have a mom body to put inside them, they do not look good on me.

VanillaAndOrange · 24/02/2021 15:40

I read somewhere that a good tip for these is to make sure the pockets are not placed too high up, otherwise they make your bum look strangely "deep" from top to bottom. Obviously I have no idea what your bum is like and how you feel about it, but it's something to look out for and it could be that your DD could see there was something not quite right about them from the back, but couldn't quite put her finger on what it was.

Floisme · 24/02/2021 15:47

I don't think they're the most flattering garment ever but then I don't think that's always the point. And if young people want to have their very own clothing, then maybe they could, you know, create something of their own, like we had to do.

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 16:31

Honestly I think they look terrible on 99% of people. I just think they make arses look awful. Sorry for any offence caused to anyone who loves them or whose arse looks amazing in them –or who doesn't give a feck what their arse looks like in them!

FedNlanders · 24/02/2021 16:38

What style are mum? Is it just straight leg?

MacDuffsMuff · 24/02/2021 16:49

I've just tried them on again and I think I'm trying to convince myself that I love them so that's a sure sign that I probably won't wear them. Back they go!

I don’t think it is an age thing, it is a figure thing. Not everybody suits them. Saying that, I don’t suit them as I have a ‘mum tum’ and yet I still wear them as I do them more comfortable than other styles.

dotdotdotdash · 24/02/2021 17:01

Mum jeans have a high waist line and tapered legs. I lurvve them because they are so comfy but I do look at my tum and thighs in them and wonder if it's a crime to wear them! I think you can get straight leg with a high waist now that might be more flattering though don't know about styles...

Craftycorvid · 25/02/2021 23:34

14-year-olds are actually hugely conservative, she probably feels uncomfortable because you’re wearing something she sees as being for her age group (wrong, we had ‘em in the 80s just called them plain old jeans then). I wear what the heck I like including mom jeans having been ‘blessed’ with small waist/big bum combo’. They’re comfy. I like the way they look.

Maxellious · 26/02/2021 10:40

Not quite the point, but jeans threads on here always make me laugh. No matter what style it is there are always a handful of posters saying that that particular shape looks horrible on everyone. Grin

FedNlanders · 26/02/2021 11:19

I miss trying stuff on. I got some straight legged jeans yesterday...they are too long!

absolutetelynotfabulous · 26/02/2021 11:25

I'm 61 and I've got two pairs. One pair was from asos and really cheap. T
I love them. I'm a 10 but not particularly small in the waist. I think I look ok in them and prefer them to skinnies.

My other pair is from New Look. They're higher in the waist. Not so sure about those. Hmm

Not jeans exactly but I recently got the Yarrel canvas trousers from Finisterre and they are sort of this shape. They are my perfect trousers as a pear shape - v roomy in the hip and thighs compared to the waist.

Yellow85 · 26/02/2021 11:46

I actually do quite like them. I have a couple of pairs (one pair are ok, the other are fab) I have to say though They are all rather fitted around the front bum region. Having worn them a few time, with the wrong knickers it’s just asking for thrush 🤣🤣

JimmyJabs · 26/02/2021 13:33

Ha! I'm a size 16 and 42 years old, and I wear them. I couldn't give a toss if I am deemed to be too fat for them, and I certainly wouldn't base my clothing choices on what a 14 year old thinks I should be wearing. Surely in the S&B section we can have a discussion about a garment without the "you can only wear this if you're a 6ft tall, 7st teenager with no visible body fat" thing coming up every time? I mean, what are we middle-aged fatties permitted to like, given that nothing we put on will fool anyone into thinking we're young and thin?

8lue8ird · 26/02/2021 13:36

I love mum jeans and I'm 43. Until they came in fashion I had a real hard time finding jeans to fit my, let's say, womanly thighs and bottom. I find them the perfect fit for me and thankfully my daughters agree

SnowdropsCrocuses · 26/02/2021 13:36

I don't have an opinion about what age group should wear them, but it sounds like your dd felt they weren't the best ones to suit you so I'd go by that. Your dd sounds kind and tactful like my teenaged dds are but I find it useful for them to tell me what looks right on me and what doesn't as they can see better than I can in a mirror

Bagelsandbrie · 26/02/2021 13:38

No teenager wants their mum wearing the same clothes as them. Grin

Wear them anyway!

What is life without your parents embarrassing you?

I think baggier jeans can suit anyone, it’s about what else you wear them with and how they’re styled.

I am 40 a size 16/18 and I wear baggy Mom jeans, bright sweatshirts from Asos and Lucy Yak, big plastic specs, platform converse etc.

My dd is nearly 18 now and she loves the fact I’m - in her opinion - “trendy” now, mainly because she gets all my cast offs (!) but she did go through a stage when she was 12-14ish where she basically wanted me dressed head to toe in dark bland things from Next!

Ah come on no one has said that! Grin I usually don't even consider what anyone else thinks about my clothes so I suppose I asked because I knew they weren't right for me. They don't suit me when it comes down to it, even though I like how they look on other people. I sent a photo of me in them to my closest friend who came back with a helpful 'No - you look like your mum in 1986, you need to move on'. Grin

I am quite slim and they look awful on me. My friend the same age is more shapely and they look great on her but she is absolutely stunning so Could wear anything.

Young people have youthful bodies and skin to counterbalance the awful style in an ironic way whereas when your older you can’t afford to take risks like that.

I bought a lovely coat this winter, a fluffy grey trench coat that does down to my calves and I honestly looked like I had got ready for bed. Nothing like the model I saw wearing it. Everyone in my house laughed and it was sent back the next day. I’m still very sad about it.

Teandsympathy · 26/02/2021 13:51

Oh and just to say I do agree that you should be able to wear whatever you like. I wouldn’t judge anyone for wanting to wear them.
