Long denim skirt instead of jeans?

Hellvelyn · 23/02/2021 14:48

I've never really found jeans particularly comfortable and this has got worse as I've got older. I bought a calf length full denim skirt on a whim from White Stuff a few months ago and find it so much more comfortable that I've bought another similar denim skirt. Now I'm wondering whether I'm hideously frumpy. I tend to wear the skirts with brown long boots and a scoop neck t-shirt and little jumper or cardi. Will probably wear them with white trainers or sandals as it gets warmer. Honest thoughts please. For context I'm 49 ,5ft 6 and size 12 to 14. Clothes tend to be very functional for me but I do like nice bright colours and would hate to look a real frump.

I think you're asking the question because you know the answer already...

Kanaloa · 23/02/2021 15:01

If it’s comfy and you like it I wouldn’t bother whether you look frumpy or not. I think things that might look frumpy on one person look cool on another, and people tend to look their best when they’re comfortable with what they’re wearing.

In saying that, if you do feel frumpy then maybe looking at pants that aren’t jeans? Or possibly dresses.

athousandstrawberrylollys · 23/02/2021 15:01

Well I'm at a uni that considers itself trendy to the point of parody and long denim skirts seem to be everywhere at least on the rare occasions we are allowed out! Those and long floaty floral skirts. If it makes you feel comfortable and confident, you should wear it.

Boggydog · 23/02/2021 15:04

Blimey that’s harsh, difficult to say without a picture. I looked at a very similar denim tiered skirt from white stuff a while ago but veered away because I was worried about looking frumpy, I’m 45. That doesn’t really help does it Confused

Boggydog · 23/02/2021 15:05

Summa’s post I mean

Hellvelyn · 23/02/2021 15:10

Quite a varied response! Comfort is definitely very important to me and I live in dresses over the summer mainly because they're so comfy (and I'm a sucker for a pretty dress) I'm definitely not looking forward to having to wear my trusty jogging bottoms less as we move out of lockdown!

I think we need to see it........

ginandwineandbaileys · 23/02/2021 17:40

I like mine, so I'd say go for it. You could wear with birkies or trainers too
I wear mine with docs at the moment, or trainers of the weather is warm enough, and then birkies in the summer.

BallsToYouSue · 23/02/2021 17:57

I have one! It's light coloured and therefore looks crap with tights, so I only wear it in warm(er) weather, so it isn't a good substitute for jeans in my case. Nothing fundamentally frumpy about denim midi skirts imo. I'm in my thirties if it matters.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 23/02/2021 18:25

I think I got that one out of white stuff but mine is black washed one. I really like it. I think it depends upon how you wear it.
Personally I intend to wear mine with my dr martens and a slim black all saints t-shirt with a sloppy cardi over. Dont think that is frumpy.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 23/02/2021 18:26

But i dont give a shit what others think.

chipsandpeas · 23/02/2021 18:29

i like a denim skirt, can wear it in the summer with nice sandals and in the winter with boots
hmm i fancy getting one now

Fortherosesjoni70 · 23/02/2021 18:29

Its very much a 70;s trend anway. That seems to be what is in.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 23/02/2021 18:31

Hush have a lovely one. Love the wash.

lockdownalli · 23/02/2021 18:32

Is it this one?

It would look frumpy on me but I am mid 50s.

KirstenBlest · 23/02/2021 18:32

What style is it @Hellvelyn?

I admit that it sounded frumpy in your OP but had you said Toast or something I might not have thought that, so that is just my prejudice.

Mankyfruitbowl · 23/02/2021 18:32

I have seen other people wearing them and looking cool. Me, I put one on and look like I've joined the Plymouth Brethren.

lockdownalli · 23/02/2021 18:35

APologies - you said White Stuff, not Whistles!!

This one? Still frumpy I think.....

dudsville · 23/02/2021 18:39

I have two. One's an a line with buttons, knee length. Very thin denim so it's more floaty, very summer. The other is midi with a centred front pleat and thicker denim, more autumn and winter. I love them.

I think possibly a little cardi might be a little out of date in terms of current trends, whereas a tucked in fabulous blouse might lift it more.

SmileyClare · 23/02/2021 18:41

I think it could look quite put together as you describe, with chunky brown boots, fitted cardi or top and most importantly, confidence. Smile

What ruins that look at this time of year is pairing it with a sensible coat.

Justbetweenus · 23/02/2021 18:42

Given various posters have mentioned similar styles from Hush, Whistles ... and I’ll add Baukjen, I’d say height of fashion! If you care, look at how they’re being styled for spring/summer on these stores’ websites, and I’m sure you won’t veer into frumpy!

Shitonthebloodything · 23/02/2021 20:22

I think it's pretty classic but it depends on the shape and what you put it with.

thirstyformore · 23/02/2021 20:39

I hope not! I'm just waiting for the one I ordered from whistles to arrive! I was thinking chunky boots and long sleeved top for now, moving to trainers and a T-shirt in spring or even sandals and a vest in summer.

Hellvelyn · 23/02/2021 22:10

@lockdownalli that's one of them. I actually prefer the other one which is very slightly longer without buttons but similar shape. Thanks for all your varied thoughts. I love how comfy and versatile they are and have lots of brightly coloured little scoop neck t-shirts. I have summer Birkies and some nice white trainers so need to be a bit more confidence I think!

I think denim skirt and bare legs/sandals/trainers is a great look. I don’t love them with boots/tights personally.
