Is there anything like a Mason-Pearson hairbrush?

I've had a Mason Pearson hairbrush since I was a kid - was a special birthday present as so expensive. I still have it, and it's definitely the best hairbrush ever. Mixed bristle & nylon. Never tugs or hurts, definitely no wincing or tears when using on long, tangled hair.

I want to get one for my daughters but I just saw the prices, which are truly hair-raising Shock (sorry, bad pun).

Are there any brands out there that do the same kind of brush, that are anywhere near as good? I

I remember as a child my aunt had a M&P hairbrush, I remember the noise it used to make when she brushed her hair. Funny the things you can still recall years later!

Fast forward a few years and I received one as a birthday or Xmas pressie when I was a teenager. I still have it and love it for my thick hair.

I thought about getting my DD (aged10 at that stage) one who has the same thick hair as myself, only longer but was aghast at the price. Makes me treasure my own one so much more!!

I ended up getting her this one a couple of years ago and so far, it's been brilliant. I would say it's not quite M&P standard, but it has that same noise when you brush the hair and does cut through tangles fairly quickly without hurting. Might be worth a try?

Thank you! That one does look good. It's funny what you say about the noise - it's definitely part of it! I love brushing my hair with the M&P brush...

Denman do a natural fibre brush - not boar but natural (although there is also a synthetic option too). Considerable cheaper - mine was £15.99 on Amazon but it's gone up a whole penny in two years!

Brownteddybear · 23/02/2021 07:23

If it lasts a lifetime then it's a saving in the long run could you put a little aside each month until you reach the target amount?

Munkeenut · 23/02/2021 07:26

I only use m&p brushes and I just went ahead and bought one for my DD, that was three years ago, she's still using it and I'm sure will use it for at least 10 years if not more. It's so good, and all the plastic tangle teasers we've bought for swimming bags etc have all gone by the wayside. I'd say just get one otherwise it's a false economy.

Juliancoped · 23/02/2021 07:26

KENT may do one. Prob similar price though.

Gastropod · 23/02/2021 07:39

Thanks all - my DDs have form for losing hairbrushes which is why I'm a bit worried about forking out really. But they both have long, thick hair and make such a to-do about brushing it!

Maybe I could attach a cable to the hairbrush and tie it to the wardrobe leg... or stick a smartphone to it (possibly cheaper than the M&P hairbrush) and then use the location tracking...

I am still using the M&P hairbrush my mum bought me as a teenager. They are expensive but I think they are worth every penny - have bought the same one for my daughter in the hope/expectation that she will get the same use out of it that I have from mine.

capercaillie · 23/02/2021 07:42

DD and I both use them - absolutely brilliant hairbrushes!

picklemewalnuts · 23/02/2021 07:45

I got a denman. M&P are best saved for adulthood- 18th or 21st birthday, I reckon! You just don't know whether they will be able to look after them.

QuentinWinters · 23/02/2021 07:48

I bought DD a remington detailing brush for Xmas (its electric) which makes short work of tangles. Its £15. Not very environmentally friendly though Sad

hollyhope · 23/02/2021 16:08

I quite fancy treating myself to a Mason Pearson brush.
Are there different kinds?
My hair is very thick ( two rows of extensions, so needs to be a brush that goes all the way through, if you know what I mean, or the hair underneath gets tangled).

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/02/2021 16:14

Where's the best place to buy M&P? Mine is finally looking a bit old after 30 years!

HiPieInTheSky · 23/02/2021 19:13

I love the Denman mixed fibre brush, had one for years as well as a small handbag size, that is when I use a handbag.

LunarCatAndDaffodils · 24/02/2021 00:07

De man is pretty good for the price.

LunarCatAndDaffodils · 24/02/2021 00:07

My DH bought me the medium and large ones a few years ago as a Christmas Present - I was amazed and happy . I had a little handbag size one that I loved . I would buy them again in a heartbeat as quality is fab - not that I plan on losing them .

I do think I have seen them with a discount online in past - maybe Cult Beauty or Look Fantastic ?

Honeywort · 24/02/2021 08:00

John Lewis used to sell them but when I bought dd’s I wanted to take her with me and go into an actual shop and JL were only doing them online. So we went to John Bell & Croydon (big fancy chemist on the road behind Oxford Street) and bought it there.

onemouseplace · 24/02/2021 08:06

I have a biggish (not sure if it’s medium or large) and handbag sized MPs which DM bought me about 25 years ago. I didn’t use them that much as my hair isn’t especially thick (I get on better with a wide toothed comb) but they have been a revelation on DD’s thick, wavy hair. So much better than tangle teazers (the plastic bristles go out of shape on ours as well, and can’t cope with the amount of DD’s hair.

onemouseplace · 24/02/2021 08:08

Bloody hell - I’ve just looked at the prices now! I’ll be telling DD to be more careful with hers and she won’t be taking it away with her anywhere!

Advice4worriedMum · 24/02/2021 08:10

I always had a M&P growing up. I still have one and my cousin got my twin girls one each for their christening but one of them has hair that tangles really easily and for the first time ever I found the M&P not to work well for her hair.

I tried a number of different brushes before picking up a Wet Brush. It is fantastic. It's a different kind of brush to the M&P but it glides through all our hair, gets out any tangles without tears and I tend to reach for that brush 9/10!

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 08:15

Oh my god I've just googled and realised my nan had one of these!! I kinda had a feeling about it after reading the comment about the sound of the brush as I loved using her brush whenever we stayed at hers. Massive childhood nostalgia feeling now and I also happen to need a new hair brush...

SarahLox77 · 24/02/2021 08:32

I've had Mason Pearsons all my life (that's two dressing table hairbrushes and a small one for my handbag and I'm in my forties!) but they are soo expensive.
The most recent one died last year and I decided I'd get a new one for my birthday; in the mean time I've been using this, which looks (almost) like a MP, feels (almost) like a MP, but is under £15: www.lookfantastic.com/denman-d81m-medium-finishing-brush-with-mixed-bristle/10554783.html
One day I'll treat myself though!

Gastropod · 24/02/2021 12:29

Thanks all, had forgotten about Denman! I'll definitely check out all the suggestions. I'd love to treat them to a proper MP one but I'm just not sure I can trust them not to lose it (where or how they manage to lose so many hairbrushes, I have no idea... our house isn't that big!).

Is this brush good for frizzy hair types?
