At first it felt weird, but now when I take them out it hurts 😭. I've hardly eaten all day due to the faff and pain (one bonus!) but then I feel sick because I'm hungry and the invisalign is making me gag!! Is this normal?? I've not even told anyone I was having it down because until this morning I wasn't sure!! Dh hasn't noticed yet despite lisping 🙈. I hate drawing attention to my teeth so feel embarrassed even bringing it up 😬. Also do I have to brush every time I have a drink and eat? Worried I'm going tk be over brushing!

I'm not I'm going to be able to handle this for 8mths or whatever 😭😭. Taking them out is even worse then having them in.

You’ll soon get used to it. I had them about ten years ago and it was the best money I’ve ever spent.

ChessieFL · 19/02/2021 17:26

It is hideous for the first day or so but you will get used to them I promise!

DPotter · 19/02/2021 17:29

My DD started in November and she's really pleased with how it all going. She takes painkillers for a day or 2 with each new set and after that it's fine. Rather than taking them out, try a couple of paracetamol.

Keep thinking about how wonderful your teeth and smile will be !

Soontobe60 · 19/02/2021 17:30

My DD had them. She was surprised at how uncomfortable they were, especially at first. She took paracetamol every few hours for a week every time she changed her retainer. She drank through a straw - water only - apart from when she drank with a meal. She only ate 3x a day and yes, hated removing them! However, the change in her teeth is absolutely amazing. Stick with it, it’ll become more bearable .

I'm nearing towards the end of my Invisalign treatment. My teeth look so good, the treatment is worth the pain. I had braces as a teen and they don't hurt anywhere near enough to this.

Aligner 1 caused similar discomfort as you're finding, aligner 2 was much better. You just have to bear with it really and let your orthodontist know, they can still help you via telephone.

Eat normally and then drink some water or rinse your mouse with water and/or floss. Don't forget that you're not supposed to brush directly after eating and drinking as that is when the enamel is weaker. Brush your aligner after you brush your teeth so that they stay clean.

I found the lisping annoying as well, mine was mild and I felt like I had saliva everywhere too. As a teacher this was somewhat inconvenient but after a month I got used to this, the lisp and saliva eased off and I learnt to just drink lots of water regularly when talking which also helped me personally.

The key for you though may well be asking your orthodontist for help, that's what they're there for, you're paying for them and they are the expert.

Get some painkillers down you.

I found the first day of each new set unpleasant, but the first set was definitely the worst I only drank water with them in, I sometimes brushed after eating, I always swilled with lots of water first, if I was feeling lazy it would be a quick brush and mouthwash.

My teeth are now perfectly straight, it is definitely worth the few days of discomfort.

Meltinthemiddle · 19/02/2021 17:39

Thank you!! I think I will have to fill up on 3 meals a day as this will definitely stop me from snacking. Will have to buy some mental straws I think. Did anyone have a retainer? I was slightly annoyed after starting the treatment she then listed all the possible things that's could happen and that the gaps may open up even with fixed retainer 🙄. After nearly 4k I seriously hope not 😭😭😭

It gets better! 5 years in my teeth are still straight Grin best money I've ever spent. Keep at it, the first few days are the hardest.

MoltonSilver · 19/02/2021 17:43

It's a nuisance initially but the lisp will probably be gone by the time you're on your second or third set of trays. You can drink water with them in but yes, you're supposed to brush your teeth before you put them back in after eating. You'll snack less. It's totally worth it. Best thing I ever did.

RubyandPearl · 19/02/2021 17:47

OP be careful with those mental straws....

mybodyistempura · 19/02/2021 17:49

Does anyone have any before and after photos to show how good they are?

DarcyJack · 19/02/2021 17:57

Keep going!

Hey there! I had 6 month smiles not Invisalign but there are a lot of similarities.

Yes, it hurts at first. I took painkillers for the first week but then I got used to it. It’s ‘good’ pain really if you know what I mean as I started to enjoy the feeling of my teeth going back to the correct places.

Here’s a before and after!

Oh and yes food and brushing was annoying but you can’t over brush your teeth. I dropped a dress size which was great, but of course I put it all back on after!

Meltinthemiddle · 19/02/2021 18:06

Oh wow they all look amazing. I just feel so impatient I'm sure once I see progree I will feel better. Thank goodness about the lisp going I go back to work next week. Did you tell people you were having it or did people at work notice?

OP posts:
CBAtoWalk · 19/02/2021 18:40

OP I’ve had a fixed retainer for 4 years now and there has been no movement at all. Definitely go for the fixed rather than the nightly retainer though!!! I found mine annoying for maybe 2-3 weeks and now it’s like part of my mouth.

CBAtoWalk · 19/02/2021 18:41

I think maybe people noticed but they didn’t say anything. It’s not like when you’re in school 😂

Munkeenut · 19/02/2021 18:45

Can I ask how much they are?

dontgobaconmyheart · 19/02/2021 18:46

Oh bless you OP. I can't be dishonest about it, I was the same, it genuinely really hurt and was untenable, I gave up BUT I do have chronic pain so just couldn't bear anything else hurting if you see what I mean. I wish I had stuck it out as I have heard from everyone else that you get used to it and also look at some of these amazing results! Sooner or later that will be you and this post will be a distant memory Smile

megafish · 19/02/2021 18:51

I have a fixed retainers for just over 10 years now. I've had to have a couple of repairs and a replacement but worth it.

Might have been a little movement with my wisdom teeth but nothing major.

RoastingTray · 19/02/2021 18:51

I was persuaded to go for Invisalign after another recent thread on here. Just waiting for my first set to be made. @Munkeenut mine are costing £4000 for upper and lower. It’s a lot!

DarcyJack · 19/02/2021 18:53

I don't think anyone noticed - no one has said anything at the time or since. DH and DS knew, but they were the only people I told.

Ahahahstop · 19/02/2021 18:57

Oh I'm so jealous, I went about getting done a few months ago and backed out due to price! Best of luck you'll have lovely straight teeth at the end

TaraR2020 · 19/02/2021 19:01

I had train tracks as a teen and remember the pain well! It doesn't last, I promise.

Do whatever you need to to ease the pain, painkillers etc and try to stop your head , neck and jaw from tensing cos this won't help.

Soup through a straw might in the meantime?
