I've ordered a Seasalt Janelle coat...

I took the plunge last night as there's a 50% NHS discount at the moment.
But, I'm only 5'4", is it going to be too long on me? And I know it's not a beautiful coat but I hope it doesn't look TOO frumpy.
I just wanted something both warm and waterproof but under £100.
It arrives on Wednesday!

@Floisme I have a friend who looks amazing all the time, and she only ever buys clothes that make her feel "fabulous". Granted, she's not got kids or dogs so she's spared from going out in worst of rain storms, but it's a pretty good rule of thumb to go by. Only buy stuff you look forward to wearing to.

But I'd go as far as saying all things should be both practical and aesthetic. Why not? The market for all sorts of stuff is huge, there's a lot to choose from. I'm rarely in a massive hurry to acquire a particular thing.
I can wait until I find one I actually like the look of. But we all have different tastes and mine isn't particularly seasalt oriented but that's ok - otherwise there's be one shop with ten things we'd all be shopping at!

I found that elusive coat years ago, modern, flattering, warm, waterproof massive hood, knee length

It was from Creenstone

Not seen that coat or anything like it since Sad

I now wear a Janelle with a sense of resignation Grin

bowchicawowwow · 16/02/2021 18:38

I've got one. I'm not going to win any catwalk awards whilst wearing it and I do feel a bit old before my time if I wear it doing anything other than walking the dog. That said, it's well made, fits me ok and I like the pockets. I'm an awkward shape and find coats tricky. I'm 5'9 but with a long body, shorter legs and broad shoulders - what a beauty Grin

I found my north face brooklyn parka too warm today. Not summer yet though 😂

FreekStar · 16/02/2021 18:56

I have a black one- it's great in wet windy weather and I get a lot of wear out of it because it's not so padded as to be too warm for early spring and autumn. It wasn't warm enough for me when it's below freezing though and snowing- I prefer a down puffer coat for that! I'm quite tall at 5'7" and it's just long enough to cover the tops of my knees at the front and slightly below knees at the back.

FreekStar · 16/02/2021 19:02

Can anyone link to a 'non frumpy' but practical warm waterproof coat?

ThenCatoJumpedOut · 17/02/2021 08:12

What’s your budget? Grin

Floisme · 17/02/2021 09:03

Pigtails I quite agree and I admire your friend's philosophy too. The trouble is, I live in northerly UK so I need a bad weather coat and I've had to compromise.

Sceptical ha yes, quite possibly Grin. I have moaned about this for so long that finally I realised I was even boring myself, started saving up, then bit the bullet and bought this Margaret Howell for Barbour coat

It's nowhere near the op's budget and I've never seen it reduced. Nor is it to everyone's taste, but I really like waxed cotton, how it looks and how it ages, and although it's not guaranteed waterproof, it's near enough for my city based life, plus it's surprisingly, mysteriously warm, although not cosy. I had to pay a designer premium though to get knee length as Barbour didn't do one otherwise (not in waxed cotton). That irked.

But as I've said, there are still a few days every years when it doesn't cut it and I reach for the Janelle and it's fleecy lined hood.

FreekStar · 17/02/2021 10:38

No budget- would be prepared to invest for the right coat.

ThenCatoJumpedOut · 17/02/2021 11:10

They used to do a longer version of this, which was my idea of “perfect” (still not very exciting colour wise) and wore it for 4 years

Disclaimer: I live in the sticks , ankle deep in mud, so anything even vaguely feminine is considered stylish/feminine by the locals Grin

buttheywereonlysatilites · 17/02/2021 17:57

It arrived!
It's definitely not stylish. It's frustrating because there are some simple touches they could add to make it more aesthetically pleasing, but hey ho. I'd like it to be a bit warmer, however I'll be able to fit my down gilet and a decent fleece underneath which should be enough to keep me toasty.
I've decided to keep it because I got it for half price, and it's going to be amazing when I finally return to standing at the sidelines of the DC's football matches on a rainy Sunday morning.

ThenCatoJumpedOut · 17/02/2021 21:53

I just walked the dog again for an hour in the pissing rain and stayed warm and dry. The Janelle is brilliant at what it does.

I met nobody out there in the mud anyway Grin

J0nah · 20/02/2021 09:37

I have both the Janelle and an Ilse Jacobsen and am happy with both. I find that I'm too warm in the Janelle though so haven't worn it this year. The Ilse Jacobsen is knee length on me. I'm 5ft6. It's also not padded which suits me fine this year.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2021 14:59

Thanks for the update. I think I'm going to order one. Which colour did you go for?

J0nah · 23/02/2021 18:51

My Janelle is a royal blue and my Ilse Jacobsen is navy. I've also got a knee length puffa style Barbour in a wine colour but I've never worn it. It's too hot.
