I've ordered a Seasalt Janelle coat...

I took the plunge last night as there's a 50% NHS discount at the moment.
But, I'm only 5'4", is it going to be too long on me? And I know it's not a beautiful coat but I hope it doesn't look TOO frumpy.
I just wanted something both warm and waterproof but under £100.
It arrives on Wednesday!

I think Seasalt is a funny brand. Some of it looks very arty / yoga teacher / healthy living vibe (which I like) and some of it makes me look about 80 - nothing wrong with that if I was 80 but I’m 40.

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:02

@Bagelsandbrie I couldn’t agree more. Love a lot of it but some of it is dreadful

BeautifulStar · 13/02/2021 17:03

Why would you order a coat that you know makes you look frumpy Confused

PeacheyPeach · 13/02/2021 17:13

I love mine it looks great with skinny jeans and boots and so handy for throwing on when going out for a walk x

CrazyOldBagLady · 13/02/2021 17:16

If you don't like the fit when it arrives I can recommend the plant hunter coat. I had to size down however as it swamped me.

SouthCoastShell · 13/02/2021 17:29

I can second the seasalt plant hunter coat. It's not a 'heavy' coat but so warm and totally windproof .

BonnyandPoppy · 13/02/2021 17:35

I love my janelle. Got the karki one too. Keeps me warm and dry and isn’t too heavy.

BonnyandPoppy · 13/02/2021 17:35

I have the plant hunter too and it’s much heavier than the Janelle

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/02/2021 17:39

'Frumpy' and 'old lady'.

It's a coat. It keeps you warm and dry when trudging around the park, which is about all anybody is allowed to do at the moment. It DOESN'T MATTER if you don't look like you've stepped off a catwalk. Fuck off with your 'frumpy' and 'old lady' shit.

PS: I don't even own this coat, but it looks warm and sensible - and sometimes that is EXACTLY WHAT ONE NEEDS in a coat.

stickygotstuck · 13/02/2021 17:44

@seaweedhead

I do dislike the word frumpy. Do men ever worry about looking frumpy? No- they wear clothes that are comfortable and practical and mostly don't give a second thought about whether their garments make them less attractive.
I'm with you @seaweedhead!

As far as I'm concerned, not frumpy = unfit for purpose Grin

cacaboudin · 13/02/2021 17:47

I've got the khaki one and it's warm, dry and comfortable so I frankly don't give a shit whether people think it's frumpy or not. It's so nice to have a coat that actually works.

I've had loads of compliments on it. Maybe everything else I wear is way more frumpy 🤷🏼‍♀️

Toorapid · 13/02/2021 17:47

Can you imagine men, beyond early youth, going around in a coat that doesn't do what it's supposed to , for the sake of some societal view of what they're supposed to look like?

AlwaysLatte · 13/02/2021 17:48

I'm 5'4 and have a Coverack (in navy). I think it's a similar length. It doesn't swamp me and it's the best coat I've ever had for keeping the wind out, as well as the rain.

Broadbeanssleeping · 13/02/2021 17:49

I think the shape is a little quirky, so prevents frumpyness.

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:50

@Toorapid my dp definitely wouldn’t buy a coat he thought made him look like an old bloke

Floisme · 13/02/2021 17:51

over using 'old lady' as code for ... well what exactly? Unflattering? Old fashioned? Ugly? Are we really still doing this?

Not convinced about 'frumpy' though, provided it describes clothes and not the people wearing them.

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:51

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupieI’m sure you don’t really apply this to everything you wear! Eg sundress - should just keep you really cool. No worries if it looks shit, after all function is everything Grin

You've clearly not met my son.
Toorapid · 13/02/2021 17:51

Maybe not @IdesMarchof but "society" doesn't think every warm waterproof coat for men will make him look old.

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:52

My dm who is by any standards an old lady was the one who said my Janelle coat looked very aging!

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:53

@Toorapid I agree- but I look pretty crap. I don’t need help to look crapper

TheyIsMyFamily · 13/02/2021 17:55

so true. It's frustrating being a woman sometimes; men don't put up with these thoughts!

There's a time and place for caring - and when it's bloody cold and wet and you're schlepping around in wellies for a walk, it really doesn't matter what you look like.

Ditto, on holiday in 30 degrees and paddling in a lake -(or whatever) I want a sundress that keeps me cool and I'm not too worried about looking glamorous.

31RooCambon · 13/02/2021 17:57

Im ok with the word frumpy but i agree, saying something is old lady is rude, and delusional given how badly a lot of people of any age dress. Im 50 and wouldnt wear a coat that didnt flatter me. Or
a coat that swamps me. I dont want a coat that is an unflattering length. A of people dress better as they get older imo.

IdesMarchof · 13/02/2021 17:58

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I usually don’t frequent S&B, as I’m very like you. I’m writing this wearing thermals as it’s freezing here and style /beauty are not what people associate with me.

But all I can say is the Janelle looked awful on me - odd shape. I want to be warm without people thinking “god Ides looks even worse than usual”!

So just in case useful to others, I say buy Janelle with caution
