Inexpensive treat to make my hair softer and shinier

MrsD28 · 10/02/2021 16:14

Looking for some advice! My hair looks shit - it is long-ish (longer than I would like!) and curly but also very fine - sort of soft wavy ringlets. After a few months of central heating + icy cold playgrounds / walks in the park + no haircut it just looks terrible - loads of flyaways, getting drier and fluffier by the day. I would love some sort of (inexpensive) conditioning mask or treatment to make it shinier and softer - any recommendations would be much appreciated!

I’ve always found the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle pretty good, and at only £5 (probably cheaper if you can find it in a supermarket) you can’t really complain!

When I say only £5, that’s for the bottle and I can probably get a good 10 treatments out of one bottle on my shoulder length hair.

Coconut oil on the ends, leave for an hour or so and wash out. Job's a good 'un.

The one I use is 99p from Savers. I used to use the Damage Remedy treatment from Aveda but honestly think the coconut oil is better.

elsaesmeralda · 10/02/2021 16:30

I've just tried garnier hair food and it left my hair super soft! Too soft actually but smells really nice. But I think the best you can do is meant to be coconut oil

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/02/2021 16:32

Coconut oil. Melt a little bit in your hand and apply to your hair, repeat until you have done all your hair, scalp too if you like. Leave on for half an hour or overnight or whatever. Wash hair as normal.

You could use castor oil instead if you lie but it's stickier.

AmberItsACertainty · 10/02/2021 16:33

Olive oil. Leave it in for a few hours or overnight then shampoo out and use conditioner and styling products as normal. If you've got split ends you'll have to trim them off there's no repairing those.

That new L'Oreal 8 minute water stuff is amazing. My hair needs a sort out, needs a cut etc. This stuff makes your hair so smooth. Annoying bottle and applicator. I thought it was a leave in, which is why I bought it, but it's a rinse out. You can use conditioner after, I don't. Really impressed.

Melange99 · 10/02/2021 16:35

Adding to say, it is over perfumed.

I honestly can't recommend the Give Me Cosmetics hair range enough! It's been all over my social media for a while and I bought it for my DSD14 on a whim - her hair looked amazing so purchased for myself and it really is brilliant!

Body Shop ginger shampoo - v shiny and smoothing and smells nice. Works well on long, wavy hair.

Whoateallthestuffingballs · 10/02/2021 16:59

I add olive oil and honey to my usual conditioner. Leave on as long as I can be bothered. I have wavy hair, incidentally.

OmicronPersei7 · 10/02/2021 17:01

I remember reading once that deep conditioners are pretty much the same as ordinary ones, if you leave the ordinary ones on for half an hour.

So, every once in a while, I wash with shampoo, towel dry and then apply my conditioner liberally. Wrap my hair in a towel or whatever and go read or watch some telly. Rinse after 30-60 mins and carry on as normal. I get fab results and you could do it right now, without needing to spend any money on additional products.

Sudocrem is also the best spot cream on the market and olive oil is fab for cleaning wax from your ears.

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/02/2021 17:06

I sometimes use normal hair conditioner as a pre wash mask, and it's nice.
Agree with the sudocrem. Great on bad skin.

I have special uses for my ear wax, so i leave it alone, until I need it.

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/02/2021 17:07

Oh, and it i use conditioner after shampooing but don't rinse it out all that well, my hair behaves differently.

sadpapercourtesan · 10/02/2021 17:09

Egg yolk beaten with a bit of olive oil is a great deep conditioner

I use earwax to get rid of cold sores though, so I'm probably a bit bonkers Grin

I’ve just got this and I couldn’t open the bloody thing! I ended up stabbing it with a knife and squeezing some out! How on earth do you open it?!
Idratherberude · 10/02/2021 17:13

@MerryChristmasToYou you can't just say that and leave it there!

LApprentiSorcier · 10/02/2021 17:13

Another vote for Garnier hair food mask - the coconut one is my favourite. I have long fine curly hair too, and it makes it feel thicker and more manageable.

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/02/2021 17:14

@sadpapercourtesan, I am going to try that. Do you think it would get rid of verrucas too?

MorrisZapp · 10/02/2021 17:14

The pointy pink thing twists a bit, making a hole at the top.

TheChip · 10/02/2021 17:14

Ginger oil. Add a few drops to your bottle of shampoo.

TheChip · 10/02/2021 17:14

Or conditioner

I'm wondering if you feed earwax to your cat as a "treat". I saw a post on here once that someone did that.
piscis · 10/02/2021 17:42

Garnier's hair food and leave on for a couple of hours
