Does anyone else just feel wrong without a fringe?

I've had one for most of my adult life and have recently grown it out and it turns out I just don't feel like me without it so I think I'm going to cut it back in this weekend.

Reasons I don't like it:

  1. I'm always tucking my hair behind my ears now. Otherwise it just hangs there in my face.
  1. I can't tie my hair up anymore as I don't have my shaggy fringe and wispy bits framing my face so instead of a fat Jane Birkin I now look like Moonface from The Magic Faraway Tree (see pic).
  1. I have a horizontal childhood scar on my forehead which is now fully visible and looks like a wrinkle (I dont have any others thankfully).
  1. I feel bland and boring.

Anyone else never fully dressed without a fringe?

Yup. Full short blunt fringe suits me best. I have a small forehead. Fringe has to be a a good bit above my eyebrows.

lindyloo57 · 07/02/2021 17:34

I have fringe, have had all my adult life, I too trim it myself, I do it every two weeks or so, to keep at the length I like

Melange99 · 07/02/2021 18:22

A fringe for me. It doesn't hide my forehead wrinkles, I don't have any. A life long fringe has shielded me from the worse of the rays. It is also long enough so that my eyebrows aren't such a thing. I have awful eyebrows, they have faded to nothing. But drawing them in looks wrong. Having a fringe saves me the bother.

It is only in recent times that it lays properly though. I now day it from side to side, keep it moving when drying and it then lays flat. Don't know how but it works, think I got the tip from Sali Hughes.

MissMogwai · 07/02/2021 19:07

@Melange99 I do the same drying trick! Think I got it off Mumsnet a few years ago actually. It makes all the difference doesn't it.

DrFoxtrot · 07/02/2021 21:59

I love fringes and had one most of my adult life but I think I look better without one.

I have a square jaw and fine hair. Even a fringe swept to the side looks shit with my fine hair, and the fringe always used to go stringy. The fringe was also a nightmare with hats.

I have a high forehead but I don't care and it's line free from the years of having a shit fringe Grin.

So on the back of this thread and wine I have just cut a whole new fringe into my hair. To be honest, I had been thinking about it, but this post was the final push I needed!

I've cut it a bit longer than I normally would have it (just in case) but I think I probably need to take more to thicken it out. I did the YouTube thingy of washing hair, twisting fringe back to front, cutting straight, then chopping into it.

I have wavy hair so it will probably be halfway up my forehead when I wake up tomorrow....

@SlightlyJaded it looks great! How's it looking this morning?

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 09/02/2021 11:53

Slightly love it 😀. Looks fab.

I need to hide this thread. It's making me want to cut a fringe which I will then spend months trying to grow out again.

SlightlyJaded · 09/02/2021 12:24

Took a tad more off this morning. I can actually put my hair up and not look bald - amazing!

NaughtyNell · 09/02/2021 17:17

Have been trying to grow my fringe out but it just looked a mess, cut fringe back in last night, looks much better

GwendolineWindowlene · 09/02/2021 17:24

Is there a rule as to whether a fringe will suit? And if so, what type? I have quite a short forehead and a wavy hair line.

I think hitting the brow and quite chunky would suit you @GwendolineWindowlene. Something like this maybe?

I miss my fringe so much! Look crap without one, it balances by face. Haven't had my hair cut in a year, can't wait to get it put back in once lockdown has ended!

Covidcorvid · 09/02/2021 21:41

@PLAYJAJADINGDONG

Well, wine has been drunk and the fringe has been cut.

Instantly felt more like me when I cut it and won't be growing it out again anytime soon.

Wine Slainte

I love the colour, do you dye it yourself?
Covidcorvid · 09/02/2021 21:43

I always have a full fringe. I struggle to style it though....any tips? It seems to have developed a parting and doesnt sit straight. Some hair goes straight, some lies diagonally one way..

I’ve tried a small roller but it was a disaster.

Straighteners?

GwendolineWindowlene · 10/02/2021 08:57

SlightlyJaded, thanks! That’s lovely.

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 10/02/2021 09:06

Covid I dry mine with a round boar bristle brush and as mentioned upthread, dry it while overdirecting to the left and then to the right. Usually results in it sitting perfectly but I use straighteners to slightly curl it around if not.

I colour my hair myself. Am totally grey and went au naturel for a few years but got so fed up of looking washed out and older than my years (I am pale and have realised that I need contrast between my complexion and my hair).

I do a dark cool brown semi permanent on the roots and drag it down a bit and then a blue/ green on the rest so I get a shadow root effect.

Bit of a faff to keep up but worth it as I feel a million times better and more "me" than when I was grey (still love grey on other people just not on me).

I find my hairdresser is reluctant to make a heavy fringe, there never seems to be enough hair in it.

Lulu1919 · 10/02/2021 09:14

I had a straight thick fringe for about thirty years....then covid arrived ..I was trimming it but in the end gave up ...I now don't have one ...it's odd but I think k I'll keep it like it is..my hair is long
I'm 51

Snowdropsanddaffs · 10/02/2021 09:19

I love my fringe! Feel much better with it.

Reinventinganna · 10/02/2021 09:27

I love your hair @PLAYJAJADINGDONG
I look ridiculous without a fringe.
