Does anyone else just feel wrong without a fringe?

I've had one for most of my adult life and have recently grown it out and it turns out I just don't feel like me without it so I think I'm going to cut it back in this weekend.

Reasons I don't like it:

  1. I'm always tucking my hair behind my ears now. Otherwise it just hangs there in my face.
  1. I can't tie my hair up anymore as I don't have my shaggy fringe and wispy bits framing my face so instead of a fat Jane Birkin I now look like Moonface from The Magic Faraway Tree (see pic).
  1. I have a horizontal childhood scar on my forehead which is now fully visible and looks like a wrinkle (I dont have any others thankfully).
  1. I feel bland and boring.

Anyone else never fully dressed without a fringe?

Occasionally I grow out my fringe and then I realise I need it! I have had it forever and it now also had the added benefit of covering my wrinkles!
Neither of my girls would ever countenance a fringe and, beautiful as they are, they would be even better with fringes!

Gingersnaphappy · 06/02/2021 10:57

I used to like myself in a fringe but I think older women have to be very careful about them because they can be a bit much with glasses, possibly thicker eyebrows, and often the lower part of the face is more jowley (sp?) as you age and so directing attention to a smooth forehead can be a good strategy.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/02/2021 11:14

Most older women don't have a smooth forehead though?

Well it tends to be smoother than most other areas of the face...it's all relative once you get past a certain age.

Well, wine has been drunk and the fringe has been cut.

Instantly felt more like me when I cut it and won't be growing it out again anytime soon.

Looks fabulous - if I had lovely thick hair like yours I'd absolutely be wearing a fringe.

I have super fine hair and a thinning hair line combined with an oily big forehead and I'm constantly doing the fringe/no fringe dance. My hairdresser says that my fingery dreams are unachievable Sad

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 06/02/2021 21:01

Missis 😞. I thought either a curtain fringe or the side swept wispy kind could work for fine hair?

Maybe try a different hairdresser after lockdown?

Same here. Have to have a fringe, or at least some hair sweeping my forehead. It looks terrible slapped back into a ponytail with no hair at all near my face.

grassisjeweled · 06/02/2021 21:09

My only gripe is that as I can't trim it properly myself, or it looks like I've cut it with a bloody knife and fork. Any tips?^

Think this depends on hair type. Mine is super fine and more of a feathered fringe, so I just snip it 1 cm shorter and it seems to look OK. I can imagine if you have very thick, blunt hair it'd be hard to do properly.

NovemberR · 06/02/2021 21:13

I've always had a fringe. I look terrible without one.

withmycoffee · 06/02/2021 21:19

@bellagogosdead

I have always had a fringe, I think almost everyone looks better with one. What's with the pic? Confused
I think most people look better without!

@PLAYJAJADINGDONG

Miss my tip is proper hairdressing scissors (Amazon) and youtube. There are tutorials for all different kinds of fringes.

I have a strong chin/jaw too (look a bit like Kelly Osbourne actually) and I think the fringe softens/balances my face.

What sort of fringe do you usually have? If you have a Kelly Osbourne face then sure a fringe just shortens and widens it even more?
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/02/2021 21:31

Ooooh, I should have not read this. I have curly hair, and I've been seriously considering cutting a fringe into it.

Everyone's warned me not to, and yet...Confused

Embarrasedaf · 06/02/2021 21:33

I don’t suit fringes - I have a small forehead, heart shaped face and fine hair. I just look better with the hair around my face being as long as possible! (I have a long Bob)

Embarrasedaf · 06/02/2021 21:34

OP your hair looks thick, so you definitely pull the fringe off

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 06/02/2021 21:37

Greebo curly hair with fringe is my dream hair. I even contemplated getting a perm to achieve it 😳. I vote do it!

MissisBoote · 06/02/2021 21:49

@PLAYJAJADINGDONG I've had a side swept fringe on and off for the last 8 years or so, but it just kind of gets lost in the rest of my hair because it's not thick enough.

Yes, but cutting it myself though...that's the issue...Hmm

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 06/02/2021 22:22

Fair enough Greebo, possibly not one to tackle with YouTube and merlot 🙂

I haven't been to a hairdresser in 5+ years so forget that people are stuck without them at the minute tbh.

WhataCant · 06/02/2021 22:39

Yes! Stopped having a fringe when I had children because I didn’t have time to straighten it. Lockdown one I saw myself on a zoom call and realised I look bald with my hair up! As soon as the hairdressers opened I had one cut back in Grin

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 06/02/2021 22:55

Whata 🤣

I literally haven't worn my hair up once since growing my fringe out as my face just looked like a giant empty dinner plate 🌝. I've missed my messy buns, space buns, half up dos etc too much. They look fab with a fringe and utterly appalling without.

Never again.

OP posts:
Purpleblondelady · 06/02/2021 23:47

Jumpalicious- no I wouldn't say that I had a big forehead.
I look awful with my hair up even with a fringe, it just doesn't look right anymore.

mineofuselessinformation · 07/02/2021 13:01

Just cut mine.... couldn't stand it any longer!

CaptainWentworth · 07/02/2021 13:36

I love a fringe (fellow thick haired person) but I can’t cut it myself which has out me off under current conditions. Also I like to cycle and a fringe annoys me so much under a bike helmet! I notice many female athletes have long hair no fringe as I think this is easiest to deal with when doing sport, but yeah I miss my fringe.

Yours looks great OP!

Mindgone · 07/02/2021 15:40

OP, it looks great! I once grew out mine, and finally felt like me again the second it returned! 😊
