tipping hairdressers - how much?

how much are you sposed to tip hairdressers?

just for a straightforward cut

i completely forgot last time so i need to get it right

I never tip. Can't afford to ontop of the bill. Then who do you tip, the shampooist, the hairdresser, the person that dries it?

£5 (just over 10%), I have the same hairdress every 8 weeks and have done for the past 7 years.

as a hairdresser myself i used to get tips of 50p-£1 or so for washing someones hair......and when i was fully qualified i'd get a couple of £ for a cut and blow or colouring someones hair.....if the client just left a few quid at reception when he/she payed i would always make sure i gave the junior that shampooed a quid or so as i know how much they depend on the tips- i've been there and done that, and my tips actually doubled my wage most weeks!!!

i don't tip hairdressers either, i think the cost is already high enough as it is without feeling obliged to tip them too

never tip unless in canada/usa. and then i added to the e-bill and the girl on the till worked out who got what.

I always tip my hairdresser(and taxi's).
I usually round it up so say it was £17 for a quick cut I would give her £20.
Usually costs me about £55 so I give her £58.

erm.....sometimes if i'd done a really good job, chatted to them (and not just the normall hairdresser chat of holidays etc).....as an assistant/junior i knew exactly what our regulars drank, exactly what shampoo, and would always remember what we'd chatted about the week before and continue the same conversation- i made it much more of a personal visit for the regulars.....

the hairdressers aren't always on a good wage.....i am now a SAHM and just do friends and family for free/dye costs....but as a hairdresser i was on basic wage plus a percentage of my weekly takings......so i used to come out with around £800 a month or so.....and i had to cover rent, council tax, food, petrol costs, helping my hubby through uni at the time as he could only work weekends..... so at the time tips were very important to me...... as a trainee i was on £75 a week and had to pay board at home, lunches at work, travel to work, and to be honest without the tips i would have never had ANY luxuries/nights out.....

i am on a pretty tight budget now its my hubby bringing in the wage so i dont have much money to splurge, but i always leave a little tip, even if its only 50p each for shampooist and hairdresser it makes all the difference to them!!!

I hate feeling obliged, as its' so expensive anyway. My hairdresser always says it's OK if you don't tip, but is it really? Wouldn't they more effort if they thought they'd get a fiver tip?

Around 10%, with a small bit going to the person who washed your hair.

So for a £40 hair cut, I'd usually round up to £5 for the stylist and a couple of quid for the assistant, if they were helpful and friendly.

I always leave cash with the receptionist unless the stylist comes over to the cash desk with me, in which case I give it to him/ her there.

I don't think it's always expected though. Most hairdressers/ beauticians seem to react as though they don't always get tipped. Either that or they're all particularly polite about it.

I have never tipped my hairdresser, I have a wet cut and that takes about 15-20 mins and costs £20 so I think that is enough.

i would never mention tips to my clients, they gave them if they wanted to.....i think mentioning it is a bit rude.....a tip is not something people have to do, they do it if they feel they have had good service. if someone just gave you a fast trim, your hair looked no different, you got no chat, no brew and the shampoo was crap then no tip- if you got a good cut and blow that you wished you could spray into place for the next week, good head massage with your shampoo, and felt more like you were chatting to a friend that someone who cuts your hair then you've had very good service, and if you can afford to tip a little.

we never sat down and worked out how much everyone should tip us etc....tips are given for the service you give, not if you give them a tip it might be better service next time!!!

blimin heck dexter- your being ripped off i tell you!!! i used to charge £17.50 for a cut and blowdry.......and £9 for a wet cut!!!!

actually.....if the girls are as polite as i was then it probably does look like you rarely get tips....normally 2 in 3 people will tip on an average from what we used to get.... but we always made a point in saying thankyou for it....even if it was only 10p .....that was my fave little old dears tip for me every saturday morning after her shampoo and set!!!

I don't get tipping - Why do you tip a waitress, but not a shop assistant, a taxi driver, but not a bus driver....?

I stopped tipping my hairdresser the day a saw an add for a snr stylist at the same salon at £450 pw and that was a few years ago!

jesus- thats a lot more than i ever got!!! think i might get back to work and find myself a good paying salon like that!!! haha!!

I tip 20% but my hairdresser is ridiculously cheap (charges £45 for a cut and colour, really top notch - have paid big money in West End salons and never had as good). I am soooo grateful to her, I always tip her a tenner. Reckon 10% is good enough if you're happy with the service you get.

I tip about 10% if I have a fiver or change in my purse.If I don't have any change I get all flustered and apologise profusely whilst backing out of the shop.

I thought you didn't have to tip the owner or manager? So I always try to get my hair cut by the owner because I get so stressed out by tipping!! Or have I got that seriously wrong (goes away to cringe at social crapness )
