Really: the very best lip balm for older lips

I have always been a bargain hunter, which has quite naturally, led me to buying cheap and buying twice on more than one occasion.

My lips are prone to drying out and at nearly 48, are starting to show their age.

I have started, in all areas of my life, to spend less often but to spend well - and so, with that in mind, can you recommend a really good lip balm for lips which need soothing and a little plumping?

TIA

In desperation as I had nothing else to hand i whacked a bit of Sudocrem on the other night as my lips were cracked and sore. They’re in great shape now! Smoother than they have been in ages.

IamEarthymama · 25/01/2021 22:57

teuer I only paid £4.89 for it so it can go in my dog walking coat pocket for these cold, dry days.

Off to find a bargain little pot.

I love NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Florale Multi Purpose Oil so I am sure I will like these too.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 25/01/2021 23:04

I have tried everything and then found Aloe Lips on Amazon, by Forever Living who I dislike but Aloe Lips has saved my lips! I bought a multipack so I'm never without!

Thought I was the only one who knew Lanisoh nipple cream was the best lip treatment in the world. Apparently the secret is out! About £9 for 40ml, OP.

Drinking lots of water is the only thing that works for me. Maybe because we were told in First Aid class that chapped lips are a sign of dehydration, it is now the only thing that works for me.

Chunkymenrock · 25/01/2021 23:17

I second Aloe Lips. It's really, really good.

DidgeDoolittle · 25/01/2021 23:33

I'll add my name to the nuxe in the glass pot fan club. I've been using it for years. Only use it at night. Don't need to use more. A pot lasts the best part of a year. Fantastic stuff.

I’ve found the secret is not to think in terms of a single lip balm that can do everything to keep your lips great.

So first of if they’re cracking and dry, as another poster says it’s a sign of dehydration so make sure you’re drinking enough and use a cream that will hydrate and moisturise your lips. I usually use a face cream for this - something with a name like moisture surge or ultra drench - it might well be different from your normal face cream but I’ve been lucky enough to have had several things as testers or as gifts with purchase or in beauty boxes or advent calendars that aren’t right for my face but are perfect for this purpose and as you only need a little bit for your lips they last for ages.

Then when you’ve got moisture into your lips internally and externally, you need to put something greasy on to seal the moisture in, keep them flexible and waterproofed.

I’m another lanisoh fan- long past needing nipple cream but still buy it. EA’s 8 hour cream is very similar but I don’t like the additives used and the way it smells. There are other lanolin based creams too that can work if they have a very high percentage of lanolin.

Lanisoh can be hard as pointed out - if the tube is really cold (like it may well be at the moment!) - the trick is to keep it somewhere relatively warm or even pop in your pocket for a few minutes, then a small dab will easily glide across your lips to protect them. You need to let the moisturising cream sink in well first before you put it on - if you don’t it doesn’t go on well at all - oil and water don’t mix!

Beware that some lip creams will try to say they are moisturising but are really just greasy - making your lips feel nice for a moment. But if they aren’t putting moisture into your lips, then it’s not going to do anything to properly help, hence dealing with both issues separately.

Once you have your creams it doesn’t take a moment to do both rather than just one.

As no one has mentioned it, I'm adding my favourite - L'Occitane extra rich lip balm in the white tube. A lot of things irritate my lips and this one doesn't. I sometimes add something waxy over the top for extra protection (Burt's Bees in the yellow tin at the moment).

I also find Clarins Lip Oil is amazing (I like the honey one) - not really a balm but still very moisturising!

HeronLanyon · 26/01/2021 07:04

I have always sworn by nivea blue. Even when the situation is dire !
Also palmers coca butter - really good but I really don’t like the taste.

devildeepbluesea · 26/01/2021 07:10

Gosh, so many things to try. Thanks everyone, and especially@wibdib for such a great explanation.

Lansinoah nipple cream (lanolin)

PussGirl · 26/01/2021 11:50

Blistex works well I find

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2021 11:57

Blistex in the little metal tube

RotatorCuff · 26/01/2021 12:04

I don’t think you can get Blistex in the metal tube any more - not sure what’s happened - Maybe they have discontinued it - but it’s a massive bummer.
Carmex or 8 hour cream are good. May have to try this nuxe...

teuer · 26/01/2021 13:01

MountainDweller. Your post reminded me I’ve tried Occitane and Clarins lip oil too. I liked them but nowhere near as much as Nuxe. They seemed to work temporarily but didn’t clear up flakiness or dryness.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2021 13:30

I don’t think you can get Blistex in the metal tube any more - not sure what’s happened - Maybe they have discontinued it - but it’s a massive bummer. oh no! I bought 5 tubes a few years ago, so I could have one in several coats/bags/cars and still have them.

cardoon · 26/01/2021 13:42

Saw something on another thread that there is a supply issue of blistex that they are working on. Going for crazy prices on ebay atm

CleverCatty · 26/01/2021 13:56

Nuxe honey one is good, Palmers Cocoa Butter stick also good, Burts Bees with Mango (stick) good.

Melange99 - the Carmex in the pot I find the most drying thing ever! But have it on standby in case I can't find the others.

CleverCatty · 26/01/2021 13:58

Also - those of you after the Blisteze in the metal tube - have found it twice now in chemists near where I live and by chance. Stockpiled a few. Worth a try for any of you lot - not the Boots etc!

MacDuffsMuff · 26/01/2021 16:06

Oh I hated the metal tube Blistex! Not the cream itself (which is brilliant) but for the fact that it would come out that wee metal spout so quickly and not stop til you rammed the lid on. I used to find tubes of it in just about every coat I had. Grin

Roselilly36 · 26/01/2021 16:12

I have recently brought a couple of the Hurraw lip balms, vegan, cruelty free, not expensive £5-£6, impressed so far.

Melange99 · 26/01/2021 18:24

How odd @CleverCatty I like the Carmex pot one for daytime moisturising. It mixes well with matt lipsticks too to take the colour down a notch and to change texture. Nuxe pot one is my nighttime go to.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/01/2021 21:52

I love Burts Bees Overnight lip treatment, its a fancier one in a pot. I've also used the Nuxe in the glass pot and quite liked the effect but unfortunately it felt gritty on my lips and so I didn't really use it. Shame really as it wasn't cheap. It might have been a dodgy batch though.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/01/2021 23:29

My DD has a tick were she licks her lips a lot and the best lip balm we have found is Holland and Barrett Dr Organic range.
