Can we talk about underwear? (Light-hearted)

Do you wear nice underwear every day? I've got really boring, black, cotton undies. Comfortable but well, you know, not exactly oozing appeal...
Was inspired by the bloke in Emily in Paris saying we should all wear beautiful underwear to give us confidence. I'd love to but it seems extravagant!

Beautiful underwear is great on occasion, but not practical everyday for me. I wear nude seamless pants and a nude bra most of the time to be invisible under clothes, no VPL or lace texture showing through.

newyorkbreakfast · 22/01/2021 15:02

I agree, I don't want to have to hand wash all the time so cotton is practical, but doesn't look very nice.

I like a touch of lace on a dsily basis and l want stretch. I buy 2 pairs of matching knix when l buy a new bra. I supplement these, mainly with M&S brazillians and a few from John Lewis. I try to go for bright colours to brighten up the start of each day. I refuse to do white (reminds me of school) or so called “nude” (makes my tits and crotch look like cardboard); red is surprisingly good under light coloured clothes, mixed with white or cream things it appears a very pale pink.

StarlightLady · 22/01/2021 15:07

PS: ... and it all goes in the machine at 40 degrees (in a delicates bag) regardless of what it says on the label. Even the silk ones. Life is too short to handwash knickers.

newyorkbreakfast · 22/01/2021 15:27

@starlightlady good call with the bright colours. I need to get some.

@newyorkbreakfast - it really does brighten up each morning when l come out of the shower. If you feel goid and confident in what you have on underneath, it helps you feel good about what’s on top. And over the years (40s now) it has probably brightened up a few other people’s day too! Wink

Oh, and stretch, you need stretch, otherwise after a few washes it looks and feels like a nappy.

pickingdaisies · 22/01/2021 16:46

It's all very well for the bloke in Emily's Paris, but I need comfort, not beautiful undies. If anybody knows of a comfy bra that's still comfy after 8 hours, please enlighten me. I'd be forever grateful.

pickingdaisies · 22/01/2021 16:47

Emily's Paris? Emily in Paris!!

newyorkbreakfast · 22/01/2021 16:55

@picking I got some John Lewis wireless bras that are padded and have a good structure. I find them really comfy but I haven't got big boobs so not sure if that makes a difference. I'll see if I can find them and link up. Was a 2020 winter sale purchase.

Being comfortable makes me feel more confident - natural fibres and flattering shape under clothes for me!

SummaLuvin · 22/01/2021 17:05

For fun & pretty underwear - I treated myself to a set from Dora Larson and it's beautiful and feels great on. They are a sustainable British based company, so I don't feel guilty for spending £80 on one set...

StarlightLady · 22/01/2021 18:18

Comfort and beauty are not at opposite ends of a spectrum.

Stretch lace moves with you (no baggy bum) and it does breath because it’s full of tiny holes.

Now, this may not be a popular observation but a lot of so called naural fabrics are neither natural, environmentally friendly or ethical. In fact they are significant pollutants,

Totally agree. My sweet, ever hopeful DH CANNOT understand why I don't want to wear a thong every day of the week. Um...1) they are uncomfortable and 2) I look and feel an absolute state in them! I am NOT skinny and I do not look good in a low rise thong, at all. Bless him, he thinks I do, so yes, special occasions only thanks!

I think I look perfectly fine in my comfy pants. I don't wear pants I'd be embarrassed to show at the doctors or in the changing rooms at the gym or anything. But the fancy pants aren't for every day wear in my world.

StarlightLady · 23/01/2021 06:31

@ParisJeTAime - If I’m seen getting dressed or undressed, for example in a gym changing room, l want to be seen in something nice and stylish underneath it all. And even if it is not an exact match, l want things that go together.

I think lots of us have at least one pair of plain black “doctor’s knickers” in the drawer for medical occasions.

Theredjellybean · 23/01/2021 06:41

I wear matching sets, that I think many would call luxurious, every day.
I love my extensive lingerie collection and it makes me feel good.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/01/2021 06:42

My underwear is probably the nicest thing I wear these days!
I love nice bras and knickers even though no one sees them.
I buy from Hollister, Victoria's secret and Superdry mainly.

Me too! I love fancy underwear, it makes me feel lovely under my 'normal' clothes all day.
grapefruitish · 23/01/2021 07:02

My favourite is Aubade, they are just so beautiful, last for ever and definitely machine washable!

I get this, but my fancy pants all fall down or dig in if I wear them all day. Also, cotton is much better for your um...health. So I'll stick to cotton, thanks!

Oldraver · 23/01/2021 09:07

I am irritated by lace and elastic so tend to go for black boy shorts

I need to find some that are higher waisted as my current ones ping below my tum

I managed to get some (linked from here) but we're not cotton

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 23/01/2021 09:16

I love brightly coloured underwear, and where appropriate I like to include it in my outfit, e.g. a mint green bra which can just be seen through a shirt, or a petrol blue bra with an off the shoulder jumper. while I don't necessarily want people to see all my underwear, pretty much every woman is wearing a bra of one kind or another, I don't see why we should pretend we're not!

newyorkbreakfast · 23/01/2021 09:26

I'm enjoying everyone's enthusiasm. Those who wear matching sets, do you have seven different sets for every day of the week? That's amazing. Usually I'd wear a bra for two days so would need two pairs of pants for each bra. Then another shower after an afternoon workout = yet more matching pants Grin

Sometimes the bra I buy doesn't have matching pants because I bargain- hunt in the John Lewis sale or TK Maxx! I have never spent much: typically £7-15 on a bra (apart from an ugly but useful bravissimo nude one).

I'll look at Aubade, Victoria's Secret and Superdry. I need something to look forward to these days.

I put a bra in the wash after I’ve worn it for a day, it’s touching your skin tightly and sits under your arm pit after all. I wouldn’t wear the same one the next day.

I buy 2 pairs of matching knickers with each new bra and supplement with others. So, if they don’t match they usually go together.

I’ve never had an issue about the cotton content (aside from a cotton gusset being a must, otherwise pass the Canistanl) and never had any problems. To be honest, if you wear tights and you wear knix under them, unless you only wear cotton tights, you have the same situation anyway.

JaceLancs · 23/01/2021 12:37

I don’t do glamorous underwear but it does have to match
Tend to stick to black nude and white
Most of my bras are from bravissimo as I’m a 34 or 36G depending on weight at time
I buy fairly boring cotton knickers with maybe a lace trim to wear most of the time then have 3-4 pairs of fancier ones per colour for when I’m getting dressed up

newyorkbreakfast · 23/01/2021 15:55

@grapefruitish Aubade looks lovely but about 50 quid+ for a bra.... I'd feel worried putting it in the wash!
