Beware of ordering anything from European companies post Brexit - a heads up

It will cost you more than you think, and that bargain will turn out to be very expensive.

Yes, it's now like ordering from the States

PersonaNonGarter · 21/01/2021 14:20

It will be interesting to see whether this business-to-consumer issue gets resolved reasonably quickly.

I think some brands will quickly find/set up a stockist in the UK. Others will just stop shipping here and write the UK off.

I reckon many of the clothing brands will keep trying to find a way to sell into Britain. Europe has had a retail shocker - much like the UK - so not all brands can afford to cut out UK opportunities, especially long term.

On the other hand some small niche brands just may not have the resources to service the admin for now.

Kendodd · 21/01/2021 14:23

Ooh but the joy you'll get paying the extra, knowing, you now have your own personal sovereignty (to pay more). Sellers in the EU will receive your order and look on with envy at your position and blue passports wishing, daring to dream, that they could have such freedom. They'll then put your order in the bin because it's too much trouble to send to our glorious free nation.
No price is too high for such a feeling.

Kendodd · 21/01/2021 14:29

Serious suggestion op. Write to the PM, tell him Brexit is shit, and to got back to Brussels and ask if they'll let us join the SM and CU, that'll solve all the problems for you (joining SM CU, not writing to BJ).

Zengarden001 · 21/01/2021 15:20

I got stung for import duty on an order I placed before brexit but got shipped afterwards. The company refunded me the duty charges, so it was okay in the end.

atomt · 21/01/2021 16:55

The fees seem to be so much higher than they ever were before Brexit, too. I've been buying from Australia and the US for many years and even on larger orders the customs fees have only ever been around £25 at most, never these huge amounts people are now having to pay.

So frustrating for things that are not available in the UK (my favourite shoe brands for example!).

Blondiney · 21/01/2021 17:03

Anyone know if perfume is exempt from charges, like duty free? That's about the only thing I order from the EU.

PresentingPercy · 21/01/2021 17:35

My DD uses sites like Vestaire Collective. Taxes have been applied and it’s made buying from the EU very expensive. She gave me the heads up on this 10 days ago! It’s awful and people voted for it. We are truly an island in every sense. Eurostar in trouble too!

Gwenhwyfar · 21/01/2021 18:02

Same problem the other way around. I live in the EU and many UK companies seem to have just stopped shipping over here. Maybe temporarily, I don't know...
So much for the great deal.

PresentingPercy · 21/01/2021 20:36

The customs problems/form filling are too onerous for some. Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

WingingWonder · 21/01/2021 20:44

Brace yourself if you’re in NI or ROI, I work in retail and the essential taxes being applied are outrageous, and that’s before the freight levies. I’d be surprised if any retailers can afford to absorb it :-(

Sgtmajormummy · 21/01/2021 20:47

I sent a Jiffy bag to the UK this week. I had to spend 15 minutes filling in an electronic (QR coded) customs declaration for something of NO COMMERCIAL VALUE.
The cashier and I looked at each other and agreed it wasn’t worth the effort. Pretty sure that’s what any small business or eBay seller would think.

PJsEveryday · 22/01/2021 08:18

I'm waiting on a Lookiero box that was posted post Brexit and due Jan 11th. I am dreading it coming - I had changed the service to occasionally thinking that meant I had to actively request a box. I didn't realise that your next order is automatically triggered when you receive the current one (I amended when I paid but this was apparently too late to cancel the next one. Given that there is every chance that I will be sending everything back, this will be a huge waste of money.

Somethingmavelous · 23/01/2021 14:44

I have no idea why people didn't realise they were really voting for this headache, not blue passports.
I dream of re-joining, but I'm sure they wouldn't have us back in my lifetime Sad

Redact · 23/01/2021 14:59

I only just discovered this today when tried to order some ski stuff from EU. Brexit is the worst thing the UK has ever voted for, speak about shooting themselves in the foot. I live in Scotland and we did not vote for Brexit, but have to suffer it, which just makes this all the more frustrating

sunlightbuttons · 23/01/2021 19:18

Silly question probably but how do you know about these extra charges? They don't seem to be applied at the checkout so when do you actually pay them?

sunlightbuttons · 23/01/2021 19:19

Sorry, I should have read the article first, just realised that explains it Blush

sansucre · 23/01/2021 19:39

It's not just customs charges but prices have risen too - a pair of shoes I've been coveting since the summer have gone up by £50, possibly to cover duties. It's crazy. (Am very annoyed with myself for not buying them then). I have also noticed that many EU-based companies that used to offer free shipping now charge to deliver to the UK. It's completely crap.

im5050 · 23/01/2021 19:57

I regularly buy hair extensions and wigs from the USA
I normally pay £25 -£30 custom fees on stuff worth £350-£500

im5050 · 23/01/2021 19:59

I’m being thick now but will these new prices still apply if I buy from the US

lalafafa · 23/01/2021 20:20

I’ve just been charged £42 in import duty from there.
Thismustbelove · 23/01/2021 20:23

It's the same from the UK to Europe.

I was charged €19 for an item that cost £39.
I am currently awaiting an order from Hush and am dreading the customs fees.
I am not going to order from the UK again.

lalafafa · 23/01/2021 20:23

Companies like Victoria s Secrets/Pink and Champion all operate out of the EU, can imagine their sales being badly hit.

PatchworkElmer · 23/01/2021 20:32

I’ve got a Lindex order on the way. Can I not pay charges and get refunded instead? 😬

3JsMa · 23/01/2021 20:36

No surprise at all.It was known since the referendum that we will be charged extra if we leave the EU.
Why to write about it now?
