I'm looking for a smart coat, preferably black or a dark shade.

I'm REALLY skint at the moment so it needs to be really cheap. I'm large - size 22. I like Monsoon and Boden and the better quality brands, but can't afford them!

This is only just over £40 in the M&S sale. What do you think of it?

Can anyone recommend a good sale?

Monsoon's cheapest one is this for £65 which is about my limit.

I like the military style but prefer their pricier ones. Just have to pretend I haven't seen them I guess!

I like the second one!

hollyangel · 20/01/2021 22:55

Really like the second one too.

PresentingPercy · 20/01/2021 23:00

Easily the second one. See what John Lewis have in their sale. They might have some good reductions.

LogBasketOfDreams · 20/01/2021 23:00

I struggle with the type of neck of the M&S one. I get moisturiser or make up on it, or it doesn't sit right unless fully buttoned up.

So I'd go for the second, although that neck opening is too wide for me. Too big for a scarf to cover it. I'd get cold! But if I lived in a city that wouldn't bother me...

Would you consider a DP coat....

It's nice but at a similar size to you I have never found a coat in this style look as intended.

If you've had similar before then it's nice. It's if a new style to you, beware that the tall and slender model does wonders for making the coat look good.

Bandino · 20/01/2021 23:06

I looked at that M and S one. It looks like it should be wool but it isn't. It's hard to know what the fabric will be like. La Redoute has some nice ones, not too expensive.

PresentingPercy · 20/01/2021 23:15

You will struggle to get wool for under £100. These are all M&S and in your size. All look ok to me for the money.

All the coats I posted are under £50.

Californiabakes · 20/01/2021 23:17

I like it

PickAChew · 20/01/2021 23:22

I've seen the first one in store. It's a nice looking coat for the price. No idea how it would fit, though.

As it happens, that's exactly why I'm looking for a smart coat. I do want to be able to wear it after though, I'm too skint to buy a coat for a one off occasion, I need to be able to get every-day wear out of it.

And, my friend who's funeral it is wasn't at all a formal kind of person, so I don't feel I have to stick to black necessarily.

I like the second one better. Can you order both and return the one you don't want?

grassisjeweled · 20/01/2021 23:26

Sorry about your friend.

The second one is lovely

Hobbes8 · 20/01/2021 23:27

I prefer the second one, but it’s a pretty timeless style, so if I were you I’d search boden or monsoon coats on eBay. I got fab coats from M&S (but old school and 100% wool), monsoon and Laura Ashley that way.

SniffingOne · 20/01/2021 23:27

I have the M&S one in beige and it's really nice

Lineofconcepcion · 20/01/2021 23:28

Definitely the second one although I think full length coats are more practical as you can wear anything underneath and still look smart if you see what I mean.

fastwigglylines · 20/01/2021 23:29

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, much appreciated. I'm going to go back to the M&S site, I didn't see half of those!

I'm kinda round with huge boobs! I've had coats very similar to the top two ones I posted and they were fairly flattering.

Generally, I need something with more than 2 buttons, I've discovered, otherwise they gape on my bust. And no belts, they just look silly on me! I'm not against buying a coat with a belt, but it needs to look good without it, because the first thing I'll do is take it off.

Good idea but sadly, no. If I do that I'll likely have no petrol money to get there! I really am skint.

Money's coming in in dribs and drabs right now (freelance with little work on at the moment). I'm holding out for the next SEISS grant in Feb.

I need to choose something tonight, ideally, or tomorrow, then order it to come by Saturday.

Haha, are you calling me a scruff?! How very dare you? Grin

(Thanks, that gave me a laugh. If you knew me, you'd know how apt it is).

I actually prefer the first one, especially if you have big boobs. Double breasted just adds to the general clumpyness of that area.
Hope all goes well @fastwigglylines

MyNameForToday1980 · 20/01/2021 23:37

I've got a big chest (ridic comedy boobs) and find double breasted coats widen me, whereas single breasted are more flattering.

Which is sad as I love the look of double breasted.

I'm sorry for your loss x
