Hunter wellies - overpriced or worth it?

What do you think of Hunter wellies? I need a pair of either wellies or hiking boots for walking the dog on rainy days as our park gets v muddy. Currently using old trainers which get super caked in mud on an almost daily basis.
So thought I’d get Hunters as a lot of people in the park have them. I know they’re expensive but was thinking that if I keep them for a few year (5-10) the cost per wear will be minimal. But then I read some reviews that said the quality not what it used to be and in some cases soles came off, rubber crumbled etc etc after 3 months. But others singing their praises.
What has been your experience? I considered getting some waterproof hiking boots instead. Just thinking wellies would be easier to just rinse off after a walk. Would be used at least once a day in winter. I’ve looked at other brands but want something comfortable to walk in for 2-3 miles.
Thank you!

I know 3 people who had hunters wellies that split within a year of having them. I wouldn't personally buy them. They are over priced and no better than a pair of cheap wellies. Mine were £15 off amazon and have lasted 3 years so far!

I've got a pair of Aigle now. I've had them 6 years and they still look new. I live rurally and in the winter I wear them every day on dog walks and on wet days the rest of the year. They are brilliant and my feet are always toasty warm. I've had Hunters before and they are nowhere near as good. Aigle are expensive, but they last.

Bumblebee1980a · 17/01/2021 22:43

Overrated. They split after a couple of months.

I've had two or three pairs and they have all split. Won't be buying them again (although I do like them as they're comfy and look good).

Yy to Muck boots

Nannyamc · 17/01/2021 22:44

I have the hunter fields ones very cosy about 15 yrs. No real wear and lined. Wore about 9 months a year. Worth the extra. Bought in a sale 100 pounds. Had Dunlop before had to wear extra socks all the time only lasted 2 yrs £65 and they busted

NamechangedHelpPlease · 17/01/2021 22:45

Overpriced and for people with money to throw around

ethelredonagoodday · 17/01/2021 22:46

I've never had them. Reason for this is that I come from a farming family (grandparents), as does my DH and I've never seen any of them in Hunters. If they were good, surely all the farmers, who spend 12plus hours every day in wellies, would be wearing them?!

Lou98 · 17/01/2021 23:00

Personally I love mine, I've had them for just over 5 years, got them in a Boxing Day sale, they were a good price which is why I went for them to try. I wear them constantly, we have 2 dogs and live in the middle of the country side so wear them almost daily for muddy walks! I always found with previous cheap wellies I had that they split right up the back (obviously must have been my fault with the way I walk or something as it was every pair!) but these ones are still going strong!

springdale1 · 17/01/2021 23:04

Definitely not worth it! I’ve had my le Chameau’s for five years, basically daily use in my agricultural job and they are good as new.

SkiingIsHeaven · 17/01/2021 23:08

Stopped buying Hunter's when the second pair split.

I use waterproof hiking boots now for dog walks and other excursions. Warm, dry and comfortable.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 17/01/2021 23:22

I gave up on wellies of any kind, and Hunters on particular were an overpriced disappointment. I bought these www.barebackfootwear.com/products/quebec-brown for dog walking instead and they are AMAZING! I'm regularly ankle deep in mud, and splashing through large puddles and streams (we like an adventure on our walks 😆) and they keep my feet toasty and dry. I hose them off when we get home, and treat them with a bit of dubbin now and again. I actually love them.

Ideasplease322 · 17/01/2021 23:24

Another vote for waterproof hiking boots.

The attraction with wellies is they can be adult pulled off when you get to the back door, but none are as comfy or warm as a good pair of boots.

sweetkitty · 17/01/2021 23:29

Totally agree mine barely lasted 6 months. Now have Muck boots that I’ve had a year as that’s what everyone up the stables has so figured they’re a good bet.

KimchiLaLa · 17/01/2021 23:33

Lalalalasee you're getting a bit over invested (and rude) about a pair of boots, love. Sure they may fall to shreds in a year in which case I won't purchase again and get a much cheaper pair. In my humble opinion, right now they're fine. I'm not one for wasting money either and I got them discounted. Maybe just don't get too involved in a chat about shoes?!

NotYourHolidayDick · 18/01/2021 07:06

Eh? Lala didn't say anything wrong Confused And she wasn't the only one to quote you.

Think a nerve has been touched Grin

Covidcovid · 18/01/2021 07:08

You can’t beat £10 Dunlop’s.

MiddleClassMother · 18/01/2021 07:11

I've found Barbour to be better quality. They certainly won't last 5-10, splash the cash and buy something that will last.

Emeeno1 · 18/01/2021 07:18

My Hunters split very quickly too. I won't be buying them again.

Thank you to previous posters for the alternative suggestions!

LemonViolet · 18/01/2021 07:31

Wasn’t expecting the Hunter hate! I’ve had my pair for 6 years of allotmenting and dog walking and they’re going strong, feet nice and dry, on our favourite winter walk the lake often floods over the path so they get tested regularly. I have cosy welly socks/liners to keep warm. Maybe I’m just lucky but I’d buy again.

CharlieD284 · 18/01/2021 07:41

I've got a pair - 12 years old and going strong. I bought the hunter fleece socks for them as well and they've been a god send walking the dog in wet and snow.

User647647 · 18/01/2021 07:47

They’re not as hard wearing as you would expect for the price and as others have said, they’re not warm at all.

I have a pair of fur lined,
short wellies from Joules and I love them. So much easier to get on and off too.

skankingpiglet · 18/01/2021 07:54

I have a pair of Hunters I bought for £40 'like new' with 2 pairs of fleece liners from FB Marketplace. I have barely worn them in the 2 years they've been here as they are a really really narrow fit, which coupled with the heel make them extremely uncomfortable to go any distance in. I have been planning on selling them on (they will still look 'like new' once scrubbed up) and buying something else, as my lovely warm and dry walking boots just can't cope with the mud we get here at this time of year. I don't agree with them being cold though - the fleecey liners have kept my feet really cozy.

SuperHighway · 18/01/2021 07:56

My Primark wellies lasted longer than my Hunter ones.

M0rT · 18/01/2021 07:56

I have a pair of Lidl kids wellies (small feet) for dog walking and I'd recommend.
They are fleece lined and in recent freezing fog my feet did not freeze!
Also they were €7 so I'm not precious about them. I tried Hunters on in a shop a few years ago but it felt like I was wearing heels and I have back problems so need flat boots for walking.
I also have a pair of waterproof hiking boots but I'm in Ireland so they don't come out till April as with all the rain they wouldn't get a chance for the mud to dry and be brushed off.

Puddypuds · 18/01/2021 07:57

I found my hunters were the most comfortable wellies I have ever owned but they really don't last. I now wear walking boots and gators. Warm feet, warm legs and you can wash them down like wellies.
